BMW is in the final stages of testing an updated version of the 2-Series Gran Coupe, the sleek compact sedan that originally launched in 2019 as a 2020 model. Expected to hit the U.S. market as a 2025 model, this refreshed version will bring a host of exciting updates, mirroring those recently seen on the 1-Series hatchback, which debuted in June but won’t be available in the U.S.
The latest spy shots reveal that BMW has stripped much of the camouflage from its prototypes, giving us a clearer view of the design changes. Up front, the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe sports redesigned headlights and a refreshed grille, complemented by a new, more horizontal front fascia. At the rear, the taillights feature a new graphic, and the overall design appears cleaner and more refined.
Inside, the updated 2-Series Gran Coupe is expected to adopt a more modern dashboard design similar to the one in the 2-Series Active Tourer sold overseas. This update likely includes a larger infotainment screen and a revamped center console with additional controls, including a compact gear selector nub, replacing the traditional lever. This interior upgrade was also introduced in the updated 1-Series hatchback.
While BMW has yet to confirm any powertrain changes, it’s possible the lineup will see some adjustments. The current 228i model, which features a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine with 228 hp, may be rebranded as the 230. Similarly, the M235i, powered by a 301-hp version of the same engine, could be renamed the M240. The 228i currently comes with front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive as an option, while the M235i offers all-wheel drive as standard.
A plug-in hybrid option may also be on the horizon, borrowing technology from the 2-Series Active Tourer, which offers a plug-in hybrid model with a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-3 engine and an electric motor, delivering a combined 321 hp. However, there are no immediate plans for an all-electric 2-Series Gran Coupe.
In addition to the updated 2-Series Gran Coupe, BMW has already introduced a new compact offering to U.S. showrooms—the redesigned X2, which arrived as a 2024 model earlier this spring.
