A Secret Alpha Mate -
Chapter 76
(Cameron)
"Notice anything new?" I ask my second in charge, Bryce. He walks out from behind the tree back in human form. He shakes his head, "Nothing out of the ordinary, besides the fact that I haven't seen one of their patrols out, at all."
"I've noticed that too, I've never seen any pack that didn't run strategic and constant patrols." We got close enough to the pack borders that we dared to scout out their patrols schedule. The thing was we didn't see one patrol in hours. Thinking back I don't know if there was anyone when we came last time besides at the gate.
"It makes it easier for us." I shrug,
"No one else has seen anything. What's strange though, is that they haven't seen anything. No one even leaving the pack." I look up at him, "Since last night, no one has left the pack today."
That is weird, with a pack this size there had to be members that worked outside the pack, or left for other reasons. It was past noon judging by the sun and no one left for work today? There couldn't be enough jobs inside the pack, even with our initiative for people to open shops on pack grounds, many people still worked outside the pack.
"Even if they don't leave for work, it doesn't make sense that no one would leave for anything else." I try to think of a reason for that but came up with nothing.
"Besides the complete lack of movement, nothing else out of the ordinary."
"Thanks, Bryce." He nods and changes back to his wolf to continue his patrols. I'm too far to link Jackson so I send him a quick text giving him an update.
I would be back before tonight's meeting but I wanted to stay here as long as I could. I didn't know what I was looking for but I knew that I would feel anxious if I left, as much as I trusted my men and women to this task, something this important I wanted to be there for.
Come quick - Someone let out a howl to signal their location.
I change into my wolf, Axel, mid jump and make it to where the wolf was howling.
A lone female was standing in front of one of our men, dressed in a deep purple cloak, she looked wildly out of place outside a werewolf pack.
"Do you want a treat, dog?" She cackles, "Let me pass."
I change into human form and walk towards her. She didn't seem like a wolf but I couldn't place exactly what she was. She was dressed like some sort of witch, but her scent seemed like she has been around werewolves for a while, I couldn't figure her out yet. "Hello, miss, are you lost?" I ask. She licks her lips and stares my up and down, I cover myself quickly averting her gaze.
"I am not lost, I am trying to get home but this dog won't let me." She motions to the warrior in wolf form in front of her.
"I could kill you in an instant, you dog." She spits at him, "But lucky for you, you would be worth more to me alive. I'll make sure we meet again and we can finish this little dance." She smiles at him.
"Where is home?" I ask her, drawing her attention back to me.
"It doesn't matter." She shrugs and turns to leave. I sense a few of my men coming up close to us.
Stay back. Wait for my command. I'm not sure who she is yet.
"It does, we can escort you." She laughs loudly and turns back to face me,
"No need. You couldn't be much help. I'm more dangerous than anything out here anyways." She smiles widely.
"Where are you coming from?" She stops for a second
"I'm wandering."
"I can see that." I reply.
"So why did you ask?" She raises an eyebrow, challenging me.
"You're near our pack borders." A white lie, our borders weren't too far from here.
"Oh, of course, you are a bit territorial over your space." She looks towards the wolf and me, "Well tell Alpha, Benjamin to let me through." Alpha Benjamin, she thinks we're part of Silver Moon. Should we incapacitate her? Bryce asks me.
Do you have a line of vision?
Perfectly clear
Wait for my signal
"What are you doing?" She looks into my eyes, "That weird head talking thing you do?"
"Yes, I was trying to connect to Alpha Benjamin." She crosses her arms and stares at me, bored.
"And what did he say?"
"He asks what your name is."
She rolls her eyes, "Tell him its Valoria, Val, whatever, how many witches does he know for f***s' sake?" Ah witch.
Take her down
Bryce leaps out to her and in the same instant a flash of purple smoke comes and I hear a loud yelp and a scream. F**k.
"Bryce?" I call out, I don't hear anything past the ringing in my ears.
I change into wolf form but the smoke is blinding. I sense my other men nearing the spot from their hiding places. Axel tries to smell, but his scent is masked by the smoke. Finally, we come across a body, a wolf. Laying there whimpering, thankfully still alive, it was still too smokey to asses the damage but there was a lot of blood. I recognized him as the wolf facing off with the witch from the clearing, Todd.
Someone reach out to Jackson, have him send the doctor in the medical van, it would be faster than us trying to move him.
On it
Are you okay? I try to link Todd
He whimpers but doesn't link me back.
The smoke starts to clear and I change back into human form desperately searching for Bryce. A large gust of wind blows the rest of the smoke away and I see Bryce's body laying there, holding the incapacitated woman's shoulder in his mouth. "Bryce? Bryce? Are you okay?" I kneel next to him assessing his body, it doesn't seem like he was even damaged. He makes eye contact with me.
I'm fine, just scared to move in case she's faking it.
I look over at the witch, she seems to be out of it, I had to make sure so I gave her one more knock on the back of her head. Her head lulling and her body drooping even further down.
"I'll bring her back to the pack with you now. We will have her locked in the dungeon with a 24-hour guard." Bryce nods and releases his bite, s**t that was deep, I couldn't have her dying before we got answers. I would see if the doctor could treat her in the cell after she was tied up.
I need four men with me, the rest of you stay with Todd. Once he's on his way back I want you to stay here and continue the patrol
Yes Gamma
"Gamma?" One of them comes up to me in human form, "The Doctor is on his way, we will move him closer to the road and he should be here in thirty minutes."
I nod, "Thank you." I turn to the group, "You know what to do, let's move out."
