Chapter 127
Looking at Grace in front of her, Elara thought, 'A divorced woman? Could she be talking about Lysander's mother?'
Curious, she asked, "So, you're connected to Wyatt too?"
Grace glanced at Elara and said, "Our family used to be well-off. Marrying into the Kerwin family was actually marrying down for me. I used to work at a TV station, and I was quite the beauty back then had plenty of suitors. 'When Wyatt's family was looking for a bride for him, I was among the candidates."
"You went there on your own?" Elara asked.
For a moment, Grace froze. Many candidates had gone, and she was just one of them, but Elara's question left her feeling awkward. She shot a glare at Elara, huffed, and fell silent. Natalie looked between Grace and Elara, then said to Elara, "Let's step outside and talk."
Elara knew Natalie was worried Grace might get under her skin, but her curiosity about Lysander's mother's story only grew.
Instead of leaving, Elara turned to Grace and asked, "So Wyatt didn't choose you and ended up marrying a divorced woman? What's the real story there? Why not fill me in?"
Harold always discouraged Elara from being with Lysander but never explained why.
Grace gave Elara an indignant look and had a problem with her first sentence. "What do you mean 'Wyatt didn't choose me'? I was the one who didn't want to marry him! Thank goodness I didn't."
"So what happened with his wife, then? Tell me, Mrs. Kerwin. You're the best person to ask... I'm sure you wouldn't mind sharing, right?" Elara coaxed.
Grace's mood visibly improved at Elara's flattery and she said, "Wyatt met Yessenia when she was already married."
"What?" Elara was surprised.
"But later, Yessenia's husband had an affair. Just as things were falling apart for her, she crossed paths with Wyatt. He treated her well, and eventually, they got married and had a child together," she added. It sounded like a perfect fairy tale. Awoman from a modest background, previously married, wedded into one of the most influential families.
"So, what's the scandal that everyone gossiped about?" Elara asked.
Grace continued, "Well, who would've known? One day, Yessenia decided she didn't want to stay married and asked for a divorce. She even hired Ziva to represent her in court.
"They fought the case for about two years, but it never went through. In the end... Yessenia just jumped off a building. Apparently, she did it right in front of her son. Imagine how heartless she had to be.
"Can you believe it? This woman, betrayed by her first husband, was lucky enough to marry Wyatt, but she actually wanted a divorce. What could she have been thinking? Yet despite it all, Wyatt never forgot her.
"His current wife, you know who I'm talking about? They say Wyatt only chose her because she looks like Yessenia."
'So Aubrey's mother is just a stand-in?' Elara thought, surprised at the revelation. 'Lysander has probably never mentioned this. They must still be getting along well, at least.

After listening to the story, Natalie walked Elara out of the hospital room. "I'll just see you to the door. You really don't have to come visit me again. Hospitals aren't the most uplifting places. No need to drag yourself here and risk ruining your mood." Elara replied, "You've lost weight." Elara had been away in Brookfield for just over two months, but the weight loss in Natalie was noticeable the moment she returned.
Natalie shrugged. "Between work and looking after her, there's barely enough time in the day."
Natalie didn't want to lose her job and hadn't planned on taking care of Grace, but Curtis had his own responsibilities.
Plus, Natalie's father was working on a joint project with Curtis, so Natalie felt obliged to be at the hospital to care for Grace. But Grace made things as difficult as possible.
Once outside, Natalie vented to Elara. "I just got married! If it wouldn't look bad on my dad's reputation for me to divorce right now, I'd seriously consider it.".
Elara replied, "Can't Curtis take care of her himself? They have hospital staff on hand, so why are they dragging you in? They sure know how to work you." It was obvious to Elara that Grace was picking fights on purpose. Natalie said, "It's fine. If she's deliberately giving me trouble, I'll just annoy her right back. Let's see how she likes it. Go on. You can head home."
"Alright. If anything comes up, just give me a call," Elara said with a nod.
After Elara left, Natalie returned to the hospital room. Grace, lying in bed, greeted her with a mocking tone. "You were gone quite a while. Were you bad-mouthing me to Elara?"
Natalie fired back. "So now even talking to Elara is wrong? Don't be ridiculous."
Grace lay on the bed, tears slipping down her cheeks. Natalie was baffled. She hadn't even said anything yet, and Grace was already crying. "What are you crying about?" Natalie asked, exasperated.
"If I were healthy, would I have to endure this treatment from you?" Grace replied, sniffling.
Natalie held up her phone. "How exactly am I mistreating you? Look. If this is how it's going to be, maybe Curtis should take over your care. I won't keep coming."
Grace's eyes widened. "He's got work to do. Don't bother him."
"I have a job too. So why is it okay for you to keep bothering me" Natalie retorted, frustrated.
If it weren't for the fact that she'd just gotten married, she'd have had no interest in taking on this burden.
Before the wedding, Natalie had thought she'd try to be the bigger person, kind, gentle, and a little more patient with her mother-in-law. She'd wondered, 'With how nice I am, there's no way things won't go smoothly between us. But now, Natalie realized that being nice only made others think she was easy to push around.
The moment she suggested Curtis take over, Grace immediately used his work as an excuse. In Grace's mind, Natalie was the one who should quit her job to look after her.
Does she think Curtis is some kind of president?' Natalie scoffed to herself. Seeing how pitiful Grace looked after the accident was the only reason she was even putting up with any of this.
Back at Lysander's house, Elara found he had returned. Juan was also there, and she greeted Elara. "Hello, Miss Kensington."

Elara greeted her back and headed upstairs. Just as she reached the top, Lysander stepped out of the bathroom, his eyes a bit
red.
Elara, still processing the story she'd heard about his mother, couldn't help but connect the two things.
"Why are your eyes red?" she asked, wondering if he'd been reminded of something from his childhood. Lysander took the towel from his shoulder and began drying his hair. "Got shampoo in my eyes," he muttered. Elara stifled a laugh and walked over, speaking softly, "Here, let me help you." Without waiting for his response, she took the towel from him, guided him to sit, and started drying his hair gently.
Lysander gazed at her, her face close to his, a light lavender fragrance surrounding her. He hadn't been thinking of anything in particular before, but now he felt his breathing slow and deepen.
As Elara worked on his hair, she suddenly felt his arm slip around her waist, pulling her close. "I'm not done drying your hair," she said, half-teasing.
"Where did you go?" Lysander asked, his tone curious yet protective.
"I went to the hospital to see Natalie," Elara replied. "When she got married, Mrs. Kerwin had a car accident and ended up hospitalized. She's paralyzed now and still in the hospital, so Natalie has to go every day to take care of her. "It's so exhausting. Marriage can be such a hassle. It's like it suddenly brings all these problems. Natalie's never even looked after her own parents like this, and now she has to care for Mrs. Kerwin. She's clearly frustrated by it." Before the wedding, Natalie had been in a great place, cheerful and full of energy. Lysander took her hand and reassured her. "Don't worry. If you marry me, you won't have to deal with any of that. My father is well taken care of."
