Hearing his words, Elara couldn't help but laugh. 'Is he really that nervous?' she thought.
"I'm not talking about you," Elara said aloud. "Once two people get married, they should care for each other's family, shouldn't they? But... Mrs. Kerwin has a serious character issue. "There's already staff at the hospital to help, yet she insists on giving Natalie a hard time. She makes Natalie do things that could easily be handled by the housekeepers. "Curtis just dumps his own mother on Natalie and expects her to look after her daily. He can actually do that? I think he just doesn't care about Natalie at all."
If Curtis truly cared, he wouldn't put her through this. Lysander glanced at her. "What does Natalie think about all this?"
"She's already thinking about divorce," Elara said. "Honestly, it might be better for her to go through with it."
But as she spoke, a frown appeared on her face. "Though it might not be as easy as she thinks."
Lysander looked at her with interest. "What makes you say that?"
"If it were really that easy to walk away, then..." She stopped mid-sentence, mentally finishing the thought, "Things wouldn't have turned out like that before I time traveled! After finishing drying Lysander's hair, Elara didn't go to bed. She'd already completed today's writing last night. The subsidiary in Brookfield was pretty much under control.
Elara had left one of the people her father assigned to oversee things there, and she only brought Rachel back with her. Her first priority after returning was to complete her graduation requirements.
Elara had already passed the bar exam. After graduation, she would begin a year-long internship at a law firm. Unable to resist, she picked up a book to study for a bit.
Usually, whenever Lysander came home, Elara would stick to him affectionately. Seeing her so absorbed in her reading now, Lysander didn't want to disturb her. Instead, he left the room and went to his study next door to take care of some work.

When Lysander returned and found Elara still at it, he asked, "Aren't you going to bed?"
"I need to hit the books," Elara replied. "I've been slacking off for a few days. Once I have my attorney's license, I can help Natalie with her divorce."
Lysander gazed at her and said, "Get some rest." Then, he scooped her up in his arms, adding, "You can study tomorrow."
Caught off guard, Elara instinctively wrapped her arms around him. Looking up at him, she remembered how long he'd waited for her. Putting aside her thoughts of studying, she smiled and asked, "Missed me, did you?" Lysander's mouth twitched. "Why didn't you let me know before you just up and left?" Even though it had been a while, Lysander hadn't forgotten it.
They'd barely spent any time together, and now Lysander finally had the chance to talk this over properly with her, In truth, Elara had started to miss Lysander too. She hadn't anticipated that her trip would stretch into two or three months. Of course, Lysander hadn't been idle during this time either. Hed worried at first that his own workload would keep him too busy to spend time with her, but it turned out Elara was even busier than he was.
The room was dimly lit, casting a soft glow. As she lay in Lysander's arms, Elara remembered some things Grace had

mentioned earlier. Looking up at him, she said, "I heard something about your mom today."
"Oh?" Lysander replied. "What about her?"
"Does Aubrey's mother look like your mom?" Elara asked. Lysander glanced down at her, his gaze thoughtful. "Sort of."
They resemble each other, but not exactly,' he mused. To him, there was no way anyone could be mistaken for his mother.
"I heard that it's because she looks like your mom that she got together with your dad. He must have loved your mother very much," Elara said.
"Probably," Lysander replied.
"Then why did your mother divorce him?" Elara asked.
Seeing Elara's curious gaze, Lysander leaned down and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. "I'm not really sure. Nobody knows what kind of conflict they had." "You never asked?" Elara pressed. Lysander deepened the kiss, effectively cutting off her question.
Another restless night had passed. When Elara dragged herself to breakfast, she still looked groggy, while Lysander seemed energetic and completely at ease.
She barely ate a few bites before heading back to get some extra sleep. If she hadn't already confirmed with her boss that she'd be returning to her internship at Mandinion Technology today, Elara might have slept straight into the afternoon.
By noon, she reluctantly pulled herself out of bed. After her internship with Mandinion Technology ended and she received her diploma, Elara secured an internship at a law firm.
The firm's current boss was Lysander's aunt, Evelyn. Elara's mother had once worked here as one of the founding partners, but after her passing, Evelyn had taken over the firm's management.
Elara had never held a particularly high opinion of Evelyn, so it came as a surprise to replace out they were in the same field. However, Evelyn rarely took on cases herself anymore, leaving them to her team of associates instead.
The firm was quite large, with a respectable reputation in Starfield City, where successful lawyers often gained significant local recognition. Among the interns was Elara's roommate, Cynthia, who had also secured a position here. Elara, though, was just another anonymous intern starting out, practically invisible.
She and Cynthia weren't assigned to the same mentor. Cynthia was learning under a female attorney. Elara, on the other hand, was under Hazel Winslow, a tall, slightly stout man in his late thirties.
There were three interns assigned to Hazel: two women and one man, all with similar academic backgrounds.
One of the women was Adair Balslev, an international returnee rumored to come from a well-connected family, which immediately garnered Hazel's attention.
Initially, Elara thought she would be able to work on cases right away, but she found herself assigned only basic administrative tasks.
In the afternoon, Jase, her male colleague, walked out, with her and sighed. "I think we're both done for."
"What do you mean?" Elara asked.
Jase let out another sigh. "Adair's family seems to have everything handled. I heard they're loaded and really well-connected. Hazel's definitely going to prioritize her over us.

"From what I understand, Hazel only has one spot available for permanent placement each year, and it looks like it's going to her."
Many people entered a law firm only to replace it took years to make it to full attorney status.
Hazel's team alone still had several colleagues who'd been there for years without advancing. In school, everyone seemed so capable and driven, but once you started working, connections made all the difference. "She's that impressive?" Elara commented.
"Oh, yeah. For us ordinary people, it's impossible to imagine how we're going to get ahead. There's just no hope in sight," Jase replied.
"Come on. Don't give up," Elara said with a smile. "I think I still have a pretty good shot at becoming a lawyer."
Jase shook his head. "You look like someone who hasn't been hit with the harsh reality of the working world yet. Stay here long enough, and you'll see. Without connections, you won't even get to work on a single case." "What kind of connections are we talking about?" Elara asked.
"It's not just about connections. Money helps, too. Families that can bring in revenue for the firm, that's what matters, Jase said.
"Alright," Elara said thoughtfully.
She had driven herself to work that day. Jase, like many guys, was eyeing the Mercedes-Benz G-Class parked nearby with admiration whether he could afford it or not, he still enjoyed checking it out.
While Jase was admiring the car, Elara unlocked it and climbed inside. Jase froze for a moment, speechless.

Driving away, Elara called Natalie, who'd made plans for them to have meal together. She headed straight to the
restaurant.
When she arrived, she saw Natalie already sitting at the table, sipping a glass of water, with no food in front of her. Natalie looked up as Elara sat down and said, "I want a divorce."
