Chapter 167

Elara stood up and said to Lysander, "You should go back. I'm staying here tonight to be with my dad."

She tried hard to keep her emotions in check, but she still felt herself trembling.

She didn't blame Lysander. She knew he was just a greenhorn. Until he had proven himself, few people would take him seriously.

For her sake, he had likely done everything he could. But still...

Elara missed their time together in Brookfield, when all she had to worry about was her grades, without any of these burdens. But now...

Elara finished speaking, and when she heard no reply from Lysander, she turned to leave. But he gently took her hand.

"Elara," he said quietly.

She looked back at him.

He looked at her and said, "I know today's events were tough on you and your dad. Just give me a bit more time." Elara hesitated, then replied, "If it can't be solved, just leave it. I'm not blaming you. I just need some space to think."

In this circle, she was an unremarkable presence. But surely she was allowed to feel angry sometimes.

She wanted a moment to herself to adjust and calm down.

Seeing the weary look in her eyes, Lysander let go of her hand, and she left quickly.

Crispin was smoking at the entrance as she walked through the garden. He noticed her heading out alone and asked, "Elara, are you upset?"

Elara replied, "I'm not angry. I won't be back tonight. Make sure Lysander gets home safely and tell him to get some rest."

With that, she returned to her father's room, staying there for the night.

The next day, Barrett was discharged, and Elara accompanied him home.

Ursa had already packed Elara's belongings, thinking Elara would move in with Lysander after they were married. But now, with everything that had happened, the whole thing was on hold.

Back at the firm, Elara was in the office, immersed in her current casework, Still an intern, she handled cases alongside Evelyn.

Evelyn came into the office, pausing by the door to watch Elara's focused expression, and then knocked. Elara looked up and quickly rose to greet her. "Ms. Hawthorne."

Sit down." Evelyn took a seat across from her and observed her closely. "Is your father feeling better?"

Elara nodded. "Yes, he's doing well now."

Evelyn looked at her and asked, "Not in the best mood?" It was clear that recent events had taken a toll on Elara. Elara didn't respond.

Seeing her silence, Evelyn continued, "Don't dwell on it too much. My brother already gave Orson a piece of his mind. He's always been like that. It wasn't anything personal."

"I know." Elara looked at Evelyn, appreciating the effort to comfort her. "I'm fine, really."

Evelyn smiled faintly. "I don't want you overthinking this. I might have advised against your relationship with Lysander, but you're married now. I hope things go well for you both. Don't let minor issues come between you." Elara lowered her head, then admitted softly, "I just wonder...do you think it was foolish of me to marry him?"

Evelyn huffed. "Nonsense. You're my protégé. One day, you'll be Starfield City's best attorney. Orson? He's just a relic relying on his wife's reputation. He's hardly as distinguished as he thinks."

Hearing this confidence in her potential made Elara blush with embarrassment. "I've still got a long way to go," she murmured.

"What's wrong?" Evelyn asked, raising an eyebrow. "Where's your drive? If you set your mind to something, you can make it happen. Your mother used to say that too."

She added, "Back when she was just starting out, she claimed she'd become the best lawyer in Starfield City. And she did! You should have seen her back then." As she spoke of Ziva, Evelyn's gaze held a trace of regret.

Evelyn, the cherished princess of the Hawthorne family, had never feared anyone, but Ziva was an exception.

Although the Jarvis family didn't have an impressive background, Ziva had earned Evelyn's admiration.

Hearing Evelyn speak of her mother, Elara felt a sense of pride and respect. She remembered her mother's face but knew little about her as a professional. Evelyn turned to Elara and said, "Work hard. Once you're exceptional, those who look down on you won't have anything to say."

Elara nodded. "Alright."

Although Evelyn usually had a lighthearted demeanor, her words could sometimes be surprisingly comforting.

Elara's spirits, which had been low, felt instantly revived by her mentor's encouragement.

That afternoon, they visited a client together. When Elara returned home, she saw Aubrey playing with her dog in the yard.

Cotton usually wasn't friendly with others, but it seemed to make an exception for Aubrey.

Aubrey noticed her coming in and greeted her. "Elara!"

Elara replied, "What brings you here?"

"I came with my parents. They wanted to check in on Mr. Kensington," Aubrey explained.

Elara stepped inside to replace Wyatt sitting on the sofa, chatting with Barrett.

-Felicity was in the kitchen, organizing things as if she were in her own home.

She looked energetic, showing no hint of the frailty she'd displayed in the hospital previously.

Wyatt looked up when he saw Elara. "Elara.

"Mr. Hawthorne, she replied.

"Are we still on a first-name basis?" Felicity said, entering the room. "Now that you and Lysander are married, we're family. You should call us something more fitting." Klara glanced at Wyatt. Wyatt nodded and said, "Here's a gift for you."

Someone by his side handed Elara a small bo
