Chapter 185

The sight of Jack made Elara feel an immediate wave of discomfort. "No need. I have my

Own

car."

Jack smirked. "I was actually thinking of inviting you to my place Emily would probably love to see you."

At the mention of Emily, Elara frowned. "She's at your house?" "What has he done to Emily?' Elara thought.

Jack spoke leisurely. "She's been taking a lot of heat online recently and became reclusive. She came to me, admitted she was wrong, and said she shouldn't have sued me or caused me trouble.

"I'm a pretty soft-hearted guy, so I forgave her. That's why she's staying at my place temporarily. If nothing unexpected happens, she'll drop the charges soon. You've really gone above and beyond for her, haven't you, Ms. Kensington?"

He smiled again, a smug expression that reeked of control. It made Elara's frown deepen. "You threatened her, didn't you?"

Jack's words were dripping with false sincerity. Emily had been so resolute before.

"If you're so curious, why not come to my place and see for yourself?" Jack suggested, his gaze fixed on her. "Why don't you get in the car?"

"Like I said, no," Elara replied firmly, unwilling to even entertain the idea.

Jack chuckled. "You seem so righteous, yet you don't seem all that concerned about Emily. But me? I really want to take you

home."

He stepped out of the car and approached her. "Ms. Kensington, Mr. Hacker just wants to have a word with you."

Jack's expression grew more arrogant as he added, "You should feel honored that I'm even willing to talk to you. Or do you want to check with Natalie about who I really am?"

Elara remembered Natalie mentioning earlier today that Jack wasn't someone to be underestimated.

'Is he really as powerful as he acts?' Elara wondered, her unease growing as Jack's men surrounded her.

Just then, someone walked up and stood beside her. "Sorry, Mr. Hacker, but I'll take her home myself."

Elara turned her head to see Asher standing by her side. She stared at him, confused as to why he was here.

Jack's eyes landed on Asher, and a sly grin spread across his face. "Well, if it isn't Mr. Blackwood. You have some kind of relationship with Ms. Kensington?"

Standing tall beside her, Asher replied, "Yes, I do. So I'd appreciate it if you'd let her go, Mr. Hacker, as a favor to me."

Jack raised an eyebrow. "If that's the case, maybe you can talk some sense into her." With that, Jack called off his men and walked away.

Elara turned to Asher and snapped, "Who asked you to interfere in my business?"

Seeing the cold expression on her face, Asher replied, "Like it or not, I just helped you."

"That wasn't necessary." Elara crossed her arms, unconcerned about Jack. Despite Lysander not being around, she knew he always kept a close watch on her and wouldn't let anything happen to her. Ignoring her indifference, Asher said, "I heard from Adair that you recently took on a case."

Everyone at the law firm was aware of Elara's involvement in the case, and since Adair and Asher were now dating, it wasn't surprising that Asher knew as well.

"Yeah, so?" Elara said curtly. "But why are you and your girlfriend talking about me? Asher, mind your own business and stop digging into mine."

She had only agreed to avoid trouble with him on the condition that he stayed out of her way. If Asher started causing her problems, she wouldn't hesitate to make him regret it.

Asher sighed. "Ms. Hawthorne recently told me she doesn't want to serve as our company's consultant anymore. She suggested I pick someone from the law firm instead.

"I was thinking of giving all our company's cases to you. So drop that ridiculous case. Why are you going out of your way to provoke someone like Jack?"

Elara raised an eyebrow at his tone, which was unusually concerned. "You and he are cut from the same cloth. No wonder you two get along so well." "What's that supposed to mean?" Asher asked, his voice sharpening.

"You're telling me you don't know about his scandals with women? The internet is practically exploding with them." Elara shot back.

"I know," Asher admitted. "So what? I'm not a judge. Doing business with him is hardly a crime."

"Exactly. Birds of a feather. No wonder you two hit it off," Elara said with a sarcastic smile.

"Asher Asher, however, wore a grim look. "I helped you, not so you could insult me. Do you think I'm no good? Then what exactly does it take for me to qualify as 'good' in your eyes? "Don't forget that, on the day you and Lysander got married, who helped you? It was me. I saved your reputation. Without me, what do you think the Hawthorne family would have said about you?" It had been over a year, yet Elara hadn't expected him to bring this up.

She stared at Asher, her thoughts racing. He was exactly the type to hold onto secrets and use them as leverage whenever it suited him. Under the streetlights, Asher's figure cast a long shadow.

He smirked at her. "I thought you had it all figured out at the Hawthorne family. But look at you now, married to Lysander, and your life isn't exactly perfect, is it?

"If I hadn't been here tonight, who knows how Jack might've made things difficult for you? You've got plenty of fight in you when it comes to me, but when it comes to the Hawthorne family, you're nothing."

Elara, unfazed by his mocking tone, said evenly, "I'm doing just fine, thanks. I don't need your concern. And for the record, even if you hadn't helped me back then, I would've handled it myself. You can rest easy." "Fine," Asher said coldly. "Keep going head-to-head with Jack, then. You'll regret it sooner or later."

With that, Asher got into his car and ordered the driver to leave. Before the car pulled away, he glanced at Elara one last

time.

He had thought that by helping her, she might be grateful. But no matter how much he did for her, she never seemed to appreciate it.

'She's a heartless woman, Asher thought to himself.

The moment Asher left, Elara's car pulled up. A man approached her. "Good evening, Ms. Kensington."

"Did you get the video?" Elara asked.

"Yes." He nodded.

Elara took his phone and reviewed the footage briefly. Had Ash not intervened, they might have gotten a more incriminating video of Jack harassing her, but it couldn't be helped now. She opened the car door and got in.

On the way, Elara pulled out her phone and called Emily. The call went through, and Emily's soft voice came through the line. "Hello, Ms. Kensington."

"Where are you?" Elara asked.

"I'm currently..." Emily trailed off mid-sentence, her voice faltering.

Elara cut to the chase. "At Jack's place? He said you're planning to drop the lawsuit."

After a brief silence, Emily finally admitted, "Yes, I'm at his house. He won't let me leave. I don't know what to do. He said I can go after I drop the case."

"Do you still want to pursue the lawsuit?" Elara asked.

If Emily no longer wanted to continue, Elara wouldn't pressure her. But if she was determined, Elara would do everything in her power to help.

"Of course, I want to," Emily said, her voice trembling. "But do we even stand a chance? He's... he's really powerful. I heard Harold is someone very influential. I don't even know what he does." Elara's tone turned firm. "As long as you want to fight, I'll come get you. Do you know the address?"

"Yes," Emily replied, and she gave Elara the location.

"Wait for me," Elara said, hanging up. She instructed the driver to head to the address Emily had provided.

Meanwhile, Emily sat in her room, anxiously waiting. Finally, there was a knock at the door. Emily stood up, hesitating for a moment before opening it. Standing there was Elara.
