The men, long trained in the military, exuded an imposing presence, their mere stance radiating a sense of security.

Elara hadn't expected Lysander to show up. She stepped forward to meet him. "What are you doing here?"

Lysander's gaze fell on her, his sharp eyes immediately noticing her flushed and slightly swollen face. Jack had slapped her earlier, and the mark was still visible. His brows furrowed. "What happened to your face?"

"It's nothing. He slapped me," Elara said casually, clearly not taking the incident to heart.

However, Lysander's expression darkened instantly. Jack was already being restrained by several men.

Lysander strode over to Jack, his face icy. Seeing Jack pinned to the ground, he asked coldly, "Did you hit her?"

As he spoke, his foot inadvertently landed on Jack's hand. Jack let out a cry of pain, but Lysander acted as if he hadn't noticed.

Instead, he feaned forward slightly, his voice calm yet suffused with a terrifying pressure. "I'm asking you a question."

Jack wasn't sure if Lysander had stepped on his hand on purpose, but the pain made it feel as though his fingers were about to break. He stammered, "Yes, I did. I'm sorry."

Jack, who had previously mocked the Hawthorne family, now found himself at a loss for words with Lysander standing before him.

Despite his arrogance, Jack had always lived a privileged life, and even during his brief stint in confinement, he'd been cushioned by bribes and special treatment. He was entirely unprepared to endure Lysander's ruthlessness.

As soon as Jack answered, Lysander lifted his foot, and Jack exhaled a breath of relief. But when he looked up to see Lysander's towering figure looming over him like a mountain, the sense of suffocation returned. Lysander gave him a dismissive glance before turning back to Elara. "Let's go. We're leaving."

Elara was about to reply when Jack let out two agonized screams behind her. The sounds were quickly muffled.

Elara instinctively turned to look, but Lysander wrapped an arm around her, preventing her from doing so. "Don't look. It'll just hurt your eyes," he said firmly. With that, Lysander led Elara out the door. Outside, Jack's men had all been subdued, including Emily, who stood trembling as she looked at Elara.

"Ms. Kensington..." Emily's eyes filled with tears, her expression pitiful.

Elara glanced at her and turned to Lysander. "She's not a bad person. Let her go." Hearing this, Lysander gave a subtle signal, and Emily was released.

As they stepped outside, Lysander's team followed closely. The situation inside was handed over to the police. Lysander had no interest in handling the aftermath. He was there solely to take Elara home. Emily hurried after them, her voice trembling as she addressed Elara. "Ms. Kensington, I didn't lie to you to lure you here. Jack made it up. He said those things on purpose."

Halfway through her explanation, Emily hesitated, her head lowering in defeat. "Forget it. You probably don't believe me anyway."

Elara stopped, took off her jacket, and draped it over Emily's shoulders. "I know," she said.

Chapter 187

Emily lifted her head, staring at Elara in disbelief. "You do?"

"I know he said those things on purpose, Elara continued. "He wanted to shake my resolve and make me drop the case. I believe you."

Emily's eyes widened, shock etched across her face. "You really believe me?"

No one else in the world had ever believed Emily, not the countless people online, not even her own family. Jack's lies had painted her as the villain, and she had assumed Elara would believe him too.

Elara met her gaze with quiet assurance. "We've known each other for a while. I know what kind of person you are. I'm not going to believe him over you. Now, go home and get some rest. Don't worry; this will all be resolved soon." Emily nodded, her voice soft. "Okay." She said nothing more, but tears streamed down her face.

As Elara turned back, the chilly air reminded her she'd given up her coat. She quickly walked over to Lysander and got into the car. Lysander followed her inside.

The car was warm, and Lysander reached out to take Elara's hand in his. After they left the estate, he finally turned to her and asked, "Do you really believe she's innocent?"

Elara blinked, startled by the question. "What?"

"Emily," Lysander clarified. "Why are you so sure she didn't betray you? What if she couldn't resist Jack's threats?"

Elara chuckled softly. "And so what if that's the case? I don't know what this world is truly like, and I don't know if people can always be trusted. But I do know that this world is what I choose to see it as."

To her, the world was good, and so it would be.

If she believed the world was bad, then it was bad. Elara didn't bother dwelling on it too much.

"Elara," Lysander said, gazing at her as he reached out and gently brushed his hand through her long hair.

Elara spoke up, her tone thoughtful. "I've been reflecting on what you told me last time. It really gave me a lot to think about. I've decided to stop overthinking things from now on."

Lysander looked at her tenderly, his hand sliding from her hair to her face. But his expression darkened. "Even so, you've still let yourself get hurt."

Elara felt a twinge of guilt and quickly explained, "I made all the necessary arrangements before going in. I knew I wouldn't be in any real danger. It's just a slap. It'll fade in a couple of days!

She studied him for a moment before adding, "But what about you? Why did you suddenly show up? I thought you were still out of town."

"I just got back," Lysander replied. "When I heard something was going on here, I decided to stop by and check on you."

Although he trusted Elara to handle things well and had left people to watch over her, he still felt compelled to come in

person.

Elara leaned against Lysander, exhaustion written all over her. She'd played basketball, earlier in the day, skipped dinner, and rushed over to handle the situation. Now, she was both tired and hungry.

"I don't get it," she murmured. "What kind of connections does Jack have to act so arrogantly? Even Natalie told me to stay out of his way. I won't cause trouble for you, will I?"

Lysander fell silent at her question, his expression growing serious.

Chapter 187

Elara sat up straight, concern flashing in her eyes. "Did I cause you trouble?"

It was rare for her to see Lysander looking so grave. While she wanted to stand up for justice, she also didn't want to create problems for him.

"No," Lysander finally said. "You just reminded me of something

"What is it?" Elara asked.

"I know what kind of background he has. Don't worry about it," lysander replied.

"You sound pretty confident," Elara remarked.

Lysander smiled faintly. "If I weren't confident, how could I let you do things your way? Do you really see me as someone who acts recklessly without thinking things through?"

Aside from that dream where he killed Asher and risked everything, Lysander rarely did anything without calculating the consequences. With Elara by his side, he had even more reason to be cautious and protect her. "Jack's done so many awful things," Elara said. "He won't escape justice, will he?"

Just as she finished speaking, Lysander reached out and pinched her cheek lightly.

"Ow!" Elara exclaimed, looking up at him.

"Do you have so little faith in our country's judicial system?" Lysander asked, his tone serious. "Justice might be delayed, but it will never be denied."

Elara stared at him, taking in his earnest expression, and couldn't help but burst into laughter.
