Chapter 193

Elara had no idea that Adair had been harboring a grudge against her, let alone that Adair always assumed the worst of her. In truth, Elara had never mentioned anything about Adair and Asher to the family. Now, seeing Adair greet her, Elara asked, "Why'd you bring him here?" Her eyes shifted briefly to Asher.

Adair glanced at the man beside her and deliberately looped her arm through his. "He's my boyfriend. I came to visit Mrs. Hawthorne."

Elara smirked faintly. "Aren't you worried about the family replaceing out you're dating someone?"

Adair raised her chin. "And what if they do? They already know.

After that dinner, Adair's aunt called her to question her thoroughly about the man she was with, asking if it was Asher.

That incident had actually stemmed from Felicity spotting them together downstairs and casually mentioning it. But Adair assumed it was Elara who had spilled the beans.

Elara felt that Adair's tone carried a hint of sarcasm, but since their relationship was never particularly close, she didn't dwell on it. Without further ado, Elara walked into the hospital room to check on Felicity.

Meanwhile, in the corridor, Asher and Adair stood talking. After exchanging a few words with Aubrey to comfort him, Adair eventually left with Asher.

At the hospital entrance, Asher said, "There's something at work I need to first."

Adair stared at him. "You're going back to work after hours?"

"Can't be helped," Asher replied. "I'll text you once I'm done."

Adair nodded reluctantly. "Alright."

Asher opened the car door and personally helped her into the car. After she left, Asher didn't leave the premises.

Inside the hospital room, Elara found Felicity in the same state as the day before. Having had a fight with Aubrey, Felicity was in a bad mood.

After trying to console her briefly, Elara stepped out, her mind drifting to the idea of calling Wyatt to see if he could come over and talk to Felicity. Before she could act on it, Asher appeared. "Hi, Elara." Elara looked up, surprised to see him alone. "You're not with Adair?"

"I needed to ask you something, so I sent her ahead." Asher approached, giving Elara a once-over. "What's with Jack?" he asked.

Just two days ago, he had offered to drive Elara home, but she'd refused. Then yesterday morning, he heard that Jack had been sent to prison.

Elara folded her arms. "Why are you so concerned about this? Figures-you and he are cut from the same cloth."

Asher chuckled helplessly. "I'm just curious. Am I not allowed to care about what's going on with you? Don't forget, I'm Mr. Kensington's business partner now. Can't we at least talk?" "Business partner?" Elara shot him a mocking glance. "You must be kidding. You couldn't secure funding elsewhere, so you

"Out of the goodness of his heart, he agreed to invest in you. And now you have the nerve to call yourself his partner? Shouldn't you be calling him your benefactor instead?"

Thanks to Elara's recommendation, Barrett had invested in Mandinion Technology, which had significantly boosted Asher's

company.

However, even with QuickClip under his belt, Asher still couldn't hold a candle to Barrett.

Asher, unfazed by her jab, remained focused on the topic at hand. "What did you do to Jack? Did you really send him to prison?"

"Not much," Elara replied calmly. "He tried to assault me and kidnapped Emily. Isn't this outcome only fair?"

Despite her nonchalant tone, Asher looked genuinely concerned. "He tried to assault you? Are you okay? Did you go see him that night?"

Seeing his worried expression, Elara brushed off his concern. "Mr. Blackwood, you're overstepping."

Asher frowned. "I can't even show a little concern for you?"

"You've got it right," Elara said flatly.

Asher exhaled slowly. "Aren't you worried his family will come after you? I heard they don't even fear the Hawthorne family."

Asher wasn't entirely sure what kind of backing the Hacker family had, but it was clear that Jack wasn't someone to be underestimated. He couldn't help but be concerned about Elara's situation.

Elara, however, found his concern amusing. "You're overthinking it." She had been worried before, but after meeting Sully, she felt a bit more at ease. Sully didn't seem like someone unreasonable, and he hadn't even mentioned Jack. Elara called for her driver to pick her up. Asher stood beside her watching, and said, "Adair and I are planning to go meet her family."

Elara lowered her head and started typing a message on her phone. Seeing her unresponsive, Asher asked, "Are you even listening to me?"

"What did you say?" Elara glanced at him, her expression indifferent. Clearly, she hadn't been paying attention to a word he said.

"Adair and I are meeting her family. If all goes well, we'll get married," Asher repeated.

Despite Adair being reprimanded by her aunt, she remained determined to marry Asher. Asher, for reasons he couldn't fully explain, wanted to gauge Elara's reaction.

Even though he was with Adair, he hoped absurdly to see some flicker of emotion in Elara's eyes, something to show she cared.

'Would she feel sad seeing me with someone else, like she used to when I was with Daphne?' Asher wondered.

"Congratulations," Elara said simply.

"That's all you have to say? You really don't care at all?" Asher pressed, frowning at her detached response. His irritation simmered. 'Damn it. What am I expecting?' he thought bitterly.

Elara looked at him calmly. "Isn't getting married a good thing? Marrying Adair means joining the Balslev family. You'll finally have the kind of background you've been lacking.

"Congratulations, Mr. Blackwood. My father always said he felt sorry for you. Your father treated you poorly, but you've worked hard. Now that you'll have such a well-connected wife, he can rest easy." "Elara!" he snapped her name through gritted teeth, his frustration plain. But Elara's gaze remained as unmoved as ever. Asher let out a dry, bitter laugh. "You're heartless."

Elara had no idea what kind of mood he

was in, nor did she care to replace out. "I'm leaving," she said.

Asher stood on the steps, watching her get into the car without sparing him a second glance.

The street was busy with traffic. As Elara's car disappeared into the flow, Asher's lips curved into a rueful smile. He regretted mentioning any of it.

He had known it would only make him look foolish, yet he couldn't stop himself from asking.

Seated in the car, Elara received a call from Wyatt's secretary. "Mr. Hawthorne is at home now. You can come by."

"Got it," Elara replied.
