Chapter 194

When Elara arrived at the Hawthorne residence, she stepped through the front door just as Wyatt was coming downstairs to grab something. Seeing that Elara had specifically come to see him, Wyatt asked, Elara, do you need something?"

"Mr. Hawthorne," Elara began, "I just visited Mrs. Hawthorne at the hospital. She's unwell. Would you consider going to see her?"

Wyatt's expression turned helpless at the mention of this topic. The last time, Elara had also urged him to visit Felicity, but he hadn't gone.

Later, it was Lysander who had managed to persuade him to go. Wyatt had only gone that time for Lysander's sake. Now, he had no intention of going again.

With a regretful tone, Wyatt said, "I'm sorry, Elara, but I've got something to take care of right now. I might not have the time to visit.

"If there's anything urgent, just have someone at the hospital handle it. If necessary, I'll have Anthony take care of it."

Anthony was one of Wyatt's assistants, responsible for handling various tasks on his behalf.

Hearing this, Elara responded, "You can go whenever you have time. The hospital wants Mrs. Hawthorne to undergo surgery, but she's refusing.

"It's clear that she has strong feelings for you. If you're willing to talk to her, you might be able to persuade her."

Wyatt sighed but reluctantly agreed. "I'll go."

Seeing that he had agreed, Elara relaxed and said, "As long as you're willing, I feel much better. She's been ill for a long time and refuses treatment.

"Mr. Hawthorne, I don't mean to interfere, but if something were to happen to her... I think we'd all be deeply saddened."

After all, they were a family who had lived under the same roof for so long. Though Elara hadn't spent much time with Felicity, she had always thought she was a decent person. And Wyatt had spent years with her. Wyatt nodded. "Okay. Have you eaten yet? Let's grab a meal together."

"Uh?" Elara asked, surprised. "Aren't you busy?"

"I wanted to talk to you about Lysander," Wyatt explained.

Noticing his complicated expression, Elara nodded. "Alright."

Elara joined Wyatt for a meal, with his secretary also present the entire time. Wyatt seemed more serious than usual, as though something was weighing on his mind.

"Mr. Hawthorne," Elara prompted, "didn't you say you wanted to talk about Lysander?"

Wyatt hesitated before asking, "Do you think Lysander has always resented me?"

Elara was momentarily taken aback by his question but responded, "Not really."

"You don't have to spare my feelings," Wyatt said. "He's never seemed happy living in this house. He didn't like it here.

"Back then, I sent him to Brookfield, promising it would only be until he turned eighteen. But even after I brought him back, it feels like he's never truly liked me."

Wyatt gave a faint, self-deprecating smile as he spoke. Despite having only one son, their relationship felt distant. Wyatt simply didn't know how to connect with Lysander.

Elara replied, "It's really not like that. Lysander, he's just... naturally reserved. He's always been the type to interact minimally with others, so he's not great at expressing his feelings. But I don't think he dislikes you." At least, Elara could sense that Lysander didn't harbor deep resentment toward his father.

Hearing her words, Wyatt's face softened into a small smile. "Elara, it's nice to hear that from you." Even if it wasn't entirely true, it brought Wyatt some comfort.

Elara asked, "Is this why you've been feeling down? Because he saw Sully that day? Honestly, Sully didn't say much to him. The meeting was about something else entirely."

"Something else?" Wyatt repeated, confused.

Elara explained Jack's situation briefly before adding, "It was just about that. Nothing more. Although he did mention something from the past, we didn't take it seriously. So there's really no need to dwell on it."

Wyatt said, "If Jack has done something wrong, you should deal with it as you see fit. Don't worry about anything else. I'll handle whatever comes."

Since Wyatt had said as much, Elara felt reassured. "Thank you, Mr. Hawthorne. I'll head out for now.""Alright," Wyatt agreed with a nod.

As the secretary escorted her out, she said politely, "Mrs. Hawthorne, take care."

Elara waved her off. "No need to see me out. I can manage on my own."

The driver had already arrived.

The secretary turned to Elara and said, "Please, try to persuade Lysander. We have no idea what intentions those outside people have, but Mr. Hawthorne has always valued him the most. Don't let baseless rumors cause any rift between them." "Okay." Elara nodded briefly.

When Elara returned home, she found Lysander already back, sitting at the dining table and eating.

She changed her shoes, put down her bag, and walked over. "Why'd you start eating without me?"

"Did you go home?" Lysander asked, looking at her.

Elara sat down. "Yeah, I went to talk to Mr. Hawthorne about checking in on Mrs. Hawthorne. You wouldn't believe how worried Aubrey is about his mom."

To Elara, Aubrey had always been a wonderful younger brother, kind and genuine. Now that he was facing this situation, Elara was naturally willing to help as much as she could.

Lysander commented, "I heard you had lunch with my dad. What did you two talk about?"

He's really well-informed, Elara thought. 'Everything I do at the Hawthorne family, he knows immediately.

Seeing his serious expression, Elara laughed and teased, "What's with the interrogation? Are you looking for trouble?"

Lysander glanced at her and said, "I'm just worried about whether he gave you a hard time."

He knew Wyatt was extremely sensitive about his relationship with Sully. Ever since Sully appeared, it was as if Wyatt's whole demeanor had shifted.

"No, don't worry," Elara said reassuringly. "He just asked me a few things about you."

"About me?" Lysander raised an eyebrow.

"I feel like Mr. Hawthorne cares about you a lot. It's almost like he's terrified Sully might lure you away. Even when I left, his secretary asked me to remind you not to let outside influences affect your relationship with your dad." Hearing this, Lysander sighed. "He sure overthinks things."

Elara replied, "I had lunch with him today, and I used to think he was this untouchable, aloof type. But for some reason, seeing him today, I felt like... he's kind of pitiful."

"Pitiful? What's pitiful about him? He has a son, a wife... how could he possibly be pitiful?" Lysander said with skepticism.

Lysander never felt at home in the Hawthorne family. From his perspective, Wyatt's life didn't seem particularly difficult, and he couldn't pinpoint what made Elara think he was pitiful.

Elara leaned toward him and said, "I'm going to take a shower. When you're done eating, come upstairs, and we'll talk." With that, she headed upstairs.

That night, the two of them lay in bed. Elara leaned against the pillows and looked at Lysander. "Mrs. Hawthorne said Aubrey isn't your dad's child. She said your dad never touched her.

"The only reason she became his wife was because she looks like your mom. Sometimes, I wonder if your dad never truly moved on after your mom passed. That's probably why he's so cautious around you."

His treatment of Aubrey was entirely different. Aubrey had always been obedient in front of him, never daring to step out of line.
