Chapter 199

Elara said firmly, "He won't."

Natalie glanced at the expressionless Lysander and teased, "Well you never know. Lysander's becoming more impressive by the day. We're all scrambling to ride his coattails."

Lysander turned to Natalie. "No need to joke about me, Natalie.

Natalie chuckled. "Joking with you feels like such an honor."

Seeing Natalie poking fun at Lysander, Elara cut in. "Alright, we're heading out. I've rested enough."

After a meal, she had been so drowsy she could barely keep her eyes open. Now, after a nap, she felt much more awake.

Elara and Lysander left Natalie's dining room together. Lysander carried both her bag and coat in his hands.

When they reached the door, the driver and Magnus were already waiting. The driver moved to take the bag from Lysander, but Lysander didn't hand it over. Elara's things were, of course, his responsibility to carry. Once in the car, Elara overheard Lysander outside instructing Magnus. "You head back first."

Magnus nodded. "Alright."

After getting into the car, Lysander placed Elara's coat and bag down before turning his attention to her. She was staring out the window, lost in thought. "What's on your mind?" he asked.

"I think I just saw Adair. Must've been mistaken," she said.

Elara turned to look at him, scooting closer until she was leaning against him. "Darling, hold me." The driver was right in the front seat, but Elara didn't seem to care.

Lysander glanced at her clingy demeanor and wrapped his arms around her. Elara settled comfortably into his embrace and drifted back to sleep.

Meanwhile, Adair sat in another car, watching as Asher kept gazing out the window. "What are you looking at?" she asked, leaning in so close their faces were nearly touching.

Asher turned to the woman beside him. "Nothing."

Adair smirked. "I still can't believe how lucky Elara got. Jack's actually in jail now."

Previously, when Elara had taken Emily's case, the internet had erupted in criticism. People condemned her for being a lawyer without principles, siding with someone like Emily, a socialite trying to frame Jack. Now that Jack was imprisoned, the online backlash against Elara had died down.

Asher remarked, "Seems like that Jack guy isn't so great after all.

"No," Adair replied. "His family's pretty powerful. Especially his uncle. He's doing well in the prosecutor's office.

"Plus, I heard from Aunt Zavala that even Lysander's father wouldn't want to cross him. Jack might just get out sooner than we think."

"It's already been announced. Getting him released now won't be easy," Asher said. Maybe if the case lost public attention, there'd be a chance.

Adair shrugged. "Who cares? It has nothing to do with us anyway. If he's in, he's in. By the way, my parents are coming back this weekend. Let's have dinner together."

At the mention of her parents, Asher hesitated. "Do you think they'll want to see me?"

"They don't really have a choice," Adair replied with a mischievous grin. "Even if they disapprove, I'm staying with you. Worst case, we just do things out of order.

"If we give them a Hawthorne baby to meet, they won't have much to argue about. My parents have been worried I'd never get married. They've even told me to just have a kid already." At that, Adair burst into laughter. "What do you think about that"

Asher stared at her in shock, speechless at what she had just said

Adair noticed Asher staring at her and asked, "Why are you looking at me like that? Did I scare you? Just think about it. If we had a baby who looked like you, wouldn't that be amazing?"

Hearing this, Asher gave a faint, helpless smile but didn't respond. He was pleased that Adair was willing to marry him. After all, he couldn't replace anyone better than her right now. But her boldness always made him uncomfortable.

Her enthusiasm sometimes felt overbearing, and he couldn't help but wonder, 'Is she like this with everyone?' He despised women who seemed too casual.

Adair followed Asher back to his place. Aside from his family home, Asher had bought his own apartment. It had been his dream since graduation to buy a place in Starfield City.

So, as soon as he had the money, he fulfilled that goal: a home of his own. Once inside, Adair clung to him, leaning in with an unmistakable boldness.

This was her first time at Asher's apartment, and she had never seen him this reserved.

They'd been together for so long, but they never made love. She knew Adair had pursued him relentlessly only to sleep with her.

"Why don't you take a shower first?" Asher suggested, breaking the tension.

Adair paused for a moment. "Alright." She headed to the bathroom while Asher sat on the sofa by the window, lighting a cigarette.

His thoughts drifted back to earlier that day, to the moment he saw Elara and Lysander together at the estate gates. They had been married for so long, and now he was about to get married too.

But he didn't know why he felt so dissatisfied.

Just then, Asher's phone rang. Dana's voice came through the line. "Asher, Mom's not feeling well. She wants you to come home."

Asher replied, "Okay, I'm on my way." By the time Adair came out of the shower, Asher was gone.

She received a WhatsApp message: [My sister called. Mom's not feeling well, so I had to leave.]

Adair read it and gave a simple reply. [Okay.] But deep down, she was frustrated.

Is it just my imagination, or does Asher seem not to care for me as much as I want?' she wondered.

Adair was a young, stunning beauty with a perfect figure and flawless looks. She wondered how he could not be attracted to her. 'Or... is he still hung up on Elara?' Adair thought.

Chapter 199

The next day, Elara sat in her office when the door suddenly swing open, and Adair stormed in, standing rigidly before her desk with a serious expression.

Elara looked up and raised an eyebrow at the unexpected visitor Something I can help you with?"

Adair stared at her, her voice sharp. "Do you still have Asher's WhatsApp?"

Elara frowned. "I think I do. I added him back when I worked on their company's case with Evelyn. Why?"

"Elara," Adair said through gritted teeth, "take out your phone and show me."

"Are you insane?" Elara's tone turned cold.

Adair scoffed. "Are you still in contact with Asher?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Elara said.

"You're married now, yet you're still stringing him along? Have you no shame?" Adair snapped, her frustration boiling over. She had spent hours overthinking, and the only explanation she could replace for Asher's indifference was Elara. There was no way Asher could treat her like this unless he was still hung up on that woman.

"You're overthinking things," Elara replied calmly. "I have nothing to do with him. Is something wrong between you two? Trying to pin it on me?"

"If it weren't for you, we'd be fine," Adair said bitterly. "You're no better-looking than me, and you're married! What makes you so special that he still likes you?"

Her frustration surged. Adair had everything, better looks, and a better family background. She couldn't comprehend why she was losing to Elara.
