Cara's POV

I had a fun time at our training this morning. It was rare for us not to suffer comments or glares as Brenna explained the moves to me. It was a good thing that we got to skip all the issues today. We didn't have Lena and her group watching us and making snide comments for whatever reason. I was not really worried that they would hurt us. I knew enough now to make anyone who approached me sorry they tried.

I just didn't want to cause any trouble for Brenna or Jaxon. They didn't deserve to have to protect me from the backlash I would get for defending myself. Despite the pack having a strict no-bullying policy, it still happened. My being a witch didn't help matters, So we usually just ignored them and trained. I was prouder of Brenna every training session, as she had a real gift for training. She spoke calmly and with authority. She knew what she was talking about. I tried to follow her instructions to the letter because I wanted her to be proud of me, too. At the end of every training, we Facetimed Luna at Black Moon.

It was good to see her, and it was our favorite time of the day. We would sit at the top of the hill next to the obstacle course to make sure no one else was around. My mother and Robert were the only ones with us for the calls. It was something that we both looked forward to. Luna caught us up on what was happening with her and the plans for her Luna Ceremony, and Brenna did the same. They were both so excited about formally becoming the Luna of their packs. I was proud of them both.

Brenna's ceremony will be on Wednesday, a week from now. Luna's would be on Thursday. So, most of our conversations these days revolved around the decorations and dresses they were wearing. We were all excited to get to see each other soon. I let my mind wander as I caught Robert looking at my mother again. She was on her cell phone, so I knew whoever she was talking to was far away. She had gone back to Ireland after she left my father. She lived in a coven there with other witches and warlocks.

I had tried not to pry too much into her life. She didn't seem to really want to talk about it. I just wanted to know if she was at least happy. Her honest answer surprised me as we talked one night a few days ago. "I am happy now that I am with you. I would give up my life there to stay here with you and one day be with my grandchildren. I have friends there, and a few warlocks were interested in me, but I have no desire to be in a relationship again," she told me. She seemed like she was telling the truth.

I hated that for her. She is still young. She only looks about five to seven years older than me. Our appearance is more sister-like than mother-daughter. She is a beautiful woman, and she deserves to be happy. To have someone she loves be with her, to be her companion and lover. Everyone wants to be loved and appreciated. My father did a real number on her, and it makes me angry. I wish he were still here because I would love to tell him what an ass he truly is. He ruined her for all others.

I forced myself to stop daydreaming and finish up the call. A few minutes later, we said our goodbyes. Maybe tomorrow we could go to Black Moon and have lunch with her. I am so happy for Luna. I have never seen her so happy. I see Brenna lost in thought and wonder what she is thinking about. Since it was still another hour until lunch, we went to Brenna and Jaxon's apartment. We needed to shower. I keep extra clothes here because it is closer than returning to our home in the woods. Now that Jana is after me, I will make sure to keep doing that. Robert stayed outside the apartment as he was giving us time to talk. I appreciated him being so thoughtful. I really liked Robert. I was happy when I heard that he had volunteered to escort us this morning. I knew why he did that. I wanted to help him out. I wanted to tell my mother that I hoped that she would give him an honest chance. I know that he is scared to approach her. After the number that my father did on her, she will be scared to open her heart again.

He keeps a respectable distance from her, but I have noticed him taking deep breaths whenever she walks past him. I don't want to embarrass him by mentioning it. I owe him a great deal. He was the first to realize that I was injured when I arrived. He also made sure that we managed to get away from Paxton quickly.

They were pulling up right after we entered Black Adder. I don't know how they figured out where we were going so quickly. But I do know that if Robert hadn't acted so quickly, we would have been taken back to Kamaria. I shudder to think of that. I acknowledge that Ivan, Alexei, and Jaxon had put the wheels in motion so that he could react quickly. But Robert's quick actions had saved us. We had just gotten dressed from our showers and were in the living room when the door opened. Jaxon, Alexei, and Robert entered the living room. There were two omegas behind them, each pushing a rolling cart.

"I thought we could have lunch here in our dining room before we go watch Cara train," Jaxon said as he walked over to kiss Brenna. I love how much he loves her. They are so cute together. I am so happy that they found each other. My sisters have both been blessed with mates who love them and are not afraid to show it.

We headed for the table as it was being set. Jaxon had thought of everything. They brought the plates and drinks up with them. We could choose lasagna or spaghetti with meat sauce, and the fresh bread smelled great. The bread was served with your choice of dipping it in olive oil or spreading it with butter. We all had a large side salad with several different dressings. Jaxon sat at the head of the table, with Brenna at his right. I sat next to Brenna, and Alexei sat next to me at the opposite head of the table. My mother sat beside Alexei, and Robert was between her and Jaxon.

I hope that my mother will eventually be receptive to him sooner or later. He poured her a glass of water and even served her some lasagna as it was in front of him and Jaxon. He was attentive and thoughtful to her. She seemed intent on not noticing what he was doing and thanked him for the help. I knew she could tell that he liked her. She could read his mind if she had any doubts. It seems like she would rather ignore it than deal with it. I think that is a good sign. She could just shoot him down now, and that would be that. She knows how he feels but doesn't want to hurt him. That is why it is a good sign.

I took a good look at him. He was a big guy, just sitting there he exudes almost as much power as Jaxon does. They are both alpha-born, but Jaxon has Alpha genes from both parents. Robert and his brother, Kevin, are like my sisters, with the Alpha genes from just one of their parents. Kevin had blonde hair and blue eyes. He looked like Cheryl did before she became a vampire. I am told that their father, Blake, had been a very imposing Alpha. Looking at Robert it is easy to see that was the truth.

He was taller than Jaxon's impressive 6'3" frame, but just a little taller. He had broad shoulders like Jaxon, but they were both in peak shape. Jaxon had black hair and green eyes. He seemed to be serious most of the time, but I think that comes with all the responsibilities of being the Alpha. Robert seemed much more relaxed. He had dark brown hair and soft brown eyes that seemed to twinkle with humor. I had heard that Paxton hated him for his disrespect, which made me love Robert even more.

Sasha had told me a few of the comments Robert had made at the gate while she was visiting me in the hospital. I hurt myself laughing at what he had said. Paxton hates to be disrespected more than anything else. He would hate that. Raven had told me that Robert had physically pushed Paxton out of the pack. Paxton was strong, one of the strongest in our pack, along with my father and former Alpha Hugo. He would have really hated a Gamma-ranked wolf forcing him to do anything. Robert caught me looking at him and paused briefly before asking, "Are you OK, Cara?"

"Yes, I am fine. I don't think that I have ever thanked you for what you did for me, for us, at the gate. I know that I have thanked Alexei and Jaxon for making sure that the gate guards knew to let us in. But you being there and reacting so quickly. That is what saved us. They pulled up less than a minute later. If you had made us wait, they would have dragged us back. I appreciate each and every one of you. Robert, I hope you know that you made a true enemy of Paxton. Sasha and Raven told me what you said to him. I can promise you that he will never forgive or forget what you said to him," I told him in a serious tone. He needed to watch out for Paxton in the future.

I watched him smile back at me; he was even more handsome when smiling. I hoped my mother saw him smile when I felt her gaze on me. She smiled and shook her head, as she already knew what I was thinking. She thinks I will let it go, but that will not happen. I felt Alexei squeeze my hand, and I smiled at him. He had been our savior, too. He sent me directly to the hospital with the doctor. It was invaluable, as having a doctor with hundreds of years of experience operating on you is always good.

I am glad that Jaxon and Alexei will be joining us today. I hope I don't embarrass myself in front of Alexei. Jaxon has watched my training before. My mother doesn't play in training. She doesn't take it easy, and she doesn't lower her standards for anyone. She takes it seriously because she wants me to excel. She had drilled into me that what I learned might someday save my life. She was right. It already had, just this morning.

I didn't know she was there with me this morning, but my instincts kicked in to protect myself. I saved myself from a difficult situation. I was lucky because she could not stand the sun, and the sun was about to rise. If she had been stronger or it had been more than one of them, I may not have faired so well. That chilling thought made me even more determined to make sure I learn as much as I can. I might not be so lucky the next time, as I know this is not over.
