Alexei's

POV

We were finally alone together. It was nice to be able to get to know each other better. My mate is perfect. I already knew that. I was so happy at how trusting she was with me. She hadn't even known me for two weeks, but she just showed me that she believed me to be a good man. Most people are not at all accepting of vampires, especially other species. They fear us, and for good reason. It is not smart to lower your defenses around one of us. You wouldn't realize your mistake until it was way too late.

I still feel her in my arms as I race towards the pack hospital. Cara's scent still lingers on me, but I cannot stay calm. I wished I could have brought her with me. I need her to be with me. This is a serious incident. But I knew that she wouldn't be safe there, not tonight. I knew who was behind this, and if I found her, I would probably kill her myself. Dmitry and Adrik had taken Ivan to the hospital. Dr. Gurin had gone with them. Someone had shot Ivan, and it didn't take a genius to figure out who had done it.

Dmitry had already instructed Polina, Nadia, and Irina to go replace Jana and Anika. Nothing could have prepared me for this. Ivan was one of my most trusted people. He and Dmitry were like brothers to me and Anton. We all grew up together, and there was no one I trusted more than them, except maybe Cara. I wish I had the time to explain to her what had happened. She was hurt that I just left her behind like that. I know that she will understand. I will try to figure out a way to make it up to her.

I made it to the hospital quickly, and Jaxon arrived a minute later. Seeing him run into the waiting room like he had meant a lot to me. He knows that I value every one of my people, but my team members are more family to me. I have known my fellow team members for over two hundred years. Ivan and Dmitry, I have known them for over four hundred years. They are as much my brothers to me as Anton.

"What happened?" I asked Dmitry the questions as soon as I walked up to him.

"Someone linked Ivan to tell him of a possible breach on our land. I had been talking to Ivan when he got the link, so we came out together. He had been told that two unknown persons had been seen entering. It had come from one of the patrol members, and we didn't think anything of it. We arrived at the area in question and split up. Heading in different directions to look around for the trespassers. A minute later, I heard the shot and ran over to see a dark figure standing over Ivan. I am telling you it was Jana. I saw a side view of her face before she realized I was there and ran away," Dmitry told us.

"Go get a team together, Dmitry. We don't have to banish Jana anymore. She is armed, so tell everyone to be careful. Make sure each member of the team has their own weapons. Have the whole coven looking for her. We need her found now. Tell the regular members not to approach her, that she is dangerous."Attention! This chapter belongs to obb.. If anyone is with her or tries to assist her in any way, kill them, too. I feel that Anika is with her. You warned her, but I was told that they had left the coven together tonight and lost Nadia. Please go and take care of that. I will let you know how Ivan is as soon as I know," I told him.

Dmitry placed his hand on my shoulder for a moment. I know that he is hurting as bad as I am over this. I also know that Dmitry will end her himself if he replaces her. I needed to talk to Jaxon. I wanted to tell him earlier, but things have been busy for us both lately. We have found our mates, and it is harder to replace time to meet for business lately. I took him to the far corner of the waiting room to speak to him. I wanted to make sure that no one could overhear us.

"Jaxon, we may have a bigger problem. I was having Jana trailed. Even before she tried to attack Cara, I had someone on her. Jana has not just been coming onto your packland to mess around with your warriors. Jana had lost her tail the first night, heading into another area before doubling back. Nadia said that she tracked her and could scent Jana had been with another wolf near your armory. It was a she-wolf, not one of the warriors, which caused me concern. It was why I had helped Cara learn what she needed to do to kill a vampire. Tonight, Jana and her friend Anika came back onto your land. Nadia had to stay back so they wouldn't know they were being followed. She found they had been in the same place, and they met with the same she-wolf. I don't know what is up, but something is definitely up," I told Jaxon. "Jana has come here to meet with someone inside my pack? You are right. Something is up. I would suspect it is about Brenna's Luna ceremony, but Jana doesn't even know Brenna. We can discuss this further tomorrow either at Cara's practice or in my office. I will bring Chase and Blane in on this. I had never heard of any of my members hanging out with any of the members of your coven until the fight broke out the other day. Everyone knows your team, but the regular members do not come onto our land. This has worked out for some time now. We need to figure it out before the Luna ceremony," Jaxon responded. I can see the fear in his eyes at the thought of Brenna being hurt.

"We can meet during her training. I do not want to leave Cara alone. Now that I know that Jana is armed, everything has changed. She could make another attempt right after this. I won't leave Cara defenseless. She is my priority. I hope they replace Jana tonight. If not, I will make another house call to their home in the morning. Jana had lost it, and she is a danger to my mate. I cannot believe she would shoot Ivan like this. It is clear that she did it intentionally. She linked him and lured him out. She had no way to know that Dmitry was there. Ivan probably would have died if Dmitry hadn't come with him," I mentioned.

I ran my hands through my hair in frustration when it hit me. I was so stunned that I had to grab the wall to hold myself up. "Jaxon, we have a bigger problem than Jana. She deliberately went after Ivan. She did it for a reason. She doesn't want him to see whatever it is that is about to happen. He can see visions, like our mates coming here to Black Adder. This isn't going to be over her screwing around with your men. It is going to be much bigger than that. They may plan to do something much bigger at Brenna's Luna ceremony. We need to figure out who Jana met with. If we catch Jana, we can question her to try to stop whatever it is that she is planning," I told Jaxon.

"It could only be Lena, Korey, Anna, or Sandra that they were meeting. I will check the surveillance at the armory and see if I can tell who it is. If I had to guess, Lena and Korey are the two most aggressive of my fan club. I will have them brought in and questioned. I won't allow them to cause an incident in the pack. I can't imagine either of them being brave enough to meet with a vampire. Neither of them are good fighters. I can't actually see any of my pack members doing it, but I guess you never know what someone is capable of doing. I will have Chase and Blane speak to both of them tomorrow. I won't speak to them," Jaxon told me.

"I know that Jana hates Cara. She would definitely be a threat to her. I can't allow that to happen. I will make sure that she is protected until we can shed some light on this. I will have Adrik come in the morning to your office. He can be there when Chase and Blane speak to them. Adrik will know if they are lying. We have to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible," I replied.

The doors opened, and the pack doctor, Maclain Hill, came out to speak with us. "Dr. Gurin is finishing up on Ivan now. The shot damaged his left lung and some of his intestines. It looked to both of us as if he had been crouching down when he was shot. So, the bullet traveled downward and did a lot of damage. He didn't bleed a lot, as your hearts don't pump blood like our bodies do. The biggest issue was with the lung. We repaired the rest of the damage and gave him a blood transfusion. We will be doing that daily for him. It was best to put him in an induced coma and on a ventilator for a few days. We need to make sure that his lungs will hold properly. He should wake up in a few days, and we will take him off the ventilator at that time. Do either of you have any questions?" "Will Ivan be able to recover from this?" I asked.

"Yes, he should make a full recovery. According to Dr. Gurin, you heal quickly, too. He said that by next Thursday, Ivan should be back up on his feet," Dr. Hill replied. That made me feel better about this.

"I am going to post two guards on his room. All employees must show their ID badges to enter Ivan's room, with no exceptions. They will have to be on the list you give me to be able to enter the room. Make very sure it is thorough, starting with you and Dr. Gurin, noting a nurse from each shift on there, and accounting for off days. No unauthorized people can enter unless one of Alexei's team members is inside the room with him. I don't want any unknown people to be in his room. I will not allow him to be hurt inside my pack," Jaxon told him, and the threat in his tone was clear.

"I will make up the list and have a nurse finalize it, even down to the cleaning crew. I will have it ready for you in the morning," Dr. Hill replied, bowing his head respectfully.

"Good, we will stay here with him until the warriors I requested arrive. Then, they will stay with Ivan and change out every four hours. Thank you, Dr. Hill," Jaxon told him as he nodded to us both before taking off. You could smell the fear on his face. I thanked Jaxon as we headed to the double doors to wait for Ivan to be taken to his room. I feel that Jana is already two steps ahead of us on this. I have a feeling that whatever happens is going to be really bad.
