Betrayed by My Pack – Wolfless Hybrids Escape -
Chapter 57 –
Saoirse's
POV
Brenna had a dress fitting this morning, so she is not giving Cara a lesson this morning. We finished breakfast, and I have to say that it was nice to have Alexei around. I know that Cara feels safer with him here. I can feel the difference in her. She had been a little upset this morning at the start of breakfast. Things were tense for a while before Alexei asked Cara to go to the hospital with him. Once he explained why he had rushed out last night, Cara calmed right down.
I was waiting for Robert to come with me. I knew it would stress Adra out if I arrived on her doorstep without a member of the Black Adder pack. He said that she knows him pretty well, as he brings her a food delivery once a week. I was happy that Adra would feel more comfortable with Robert present. I was glad that Cara was going to go with Alexei. It would give them more time for their bond to grow. I could feel his pain and knew how upset he was over what had happened. I had spoken with him privately this morning, and rest assured if either of us saw Jana, we would kill her on the spot. She had become too dangerous to allow her to live at this point.
"Cara, when Robert arrives, I want you to teleport straight to the hospital. Do not walk there. We still need to deal with Jana. Stay with Alexei or a guard the whole time. If you need me, remember to link me or use your necklace. Remember that you can teleport yourself, Alexei, and Ivan back to my house if an emergency occurs. Jana can't enter it, and you three will be safe," I told her.
I knew that sometimes, when you are really stressed, you can forget training, especially when you are new to it. I was so proud of Cara for instantly protecting herself against Jana. She is really coming along very quickly. I honestly didn't expect her to progress quite this fast. I didn't. I had to learn on my own after I turned thirteen years old. I lived in our home and was able to get by, and I learned from my mother's spellbooks. I have to admit that I had progressed much faster after I went to the coven I lived in for the last twenty-one years. They really helped me to excel at my craft.
I sensed Robert a few moments before a knock sounded at the door. I hurried over as I realized that he could have been put in danger by coming out here to get me. I would have felt terrible if something had happened to him in the woods. I surprised him by pulling him inside the house right after opening the door.
"Did you miss me?" he teased me. He seemed amused at my pulling him into my home.
"I was worried. I shouldn't have made you come out here to meet me. I could have used you as a beacon and met you at Adra's home. I don't want to put anyone in danger. Jana is armed and she is very dangerous. From now on, we need to just teleport in and out of the house until she is caught. I won't give her a chance to hurt any of us," I stated and then flushed in embarrassment.
I had included Robert in my statement, and his smile deepened as he looked down at me. He was less standoffish after hearing what I had just said. It was clear that I was referring to all of us present. I had been holding him at arms-length as soon as I had realized that he had caught feelings for me. I wasn't ready to be in another relationship that could result in me being hurt so badly again. It wasn't Robert's fault, but I had learned that lesson well too well. In the back of my mind, I doubted that I could ever trust another wolf again. "We are looking for her as well. I knew that a patrol had just come through here. I was safe, but I appreciate your concern," Robert told me gently.
I was all business now because I didn't want to admit that I was worried about him. "I will teleport us there, Robert. Cara, don't forget to teleport wherever you are going and be vigilant," I reminded her before giving her a quick hug. I didn't want to lose her again, not when I had just gotten her back.
I walked back over to Robert, and we were outside Adra's home in the blink of an eye. I could sense her here. She had a small garden and a charming little cottage. She had spelled it just like I had done to my home, but her spell was much weaker than mine. It would hold but not for very long in a strong attack. She needed to up her protection. Especially since she had already been hunted down by two of the vampires that lived just next door, they were not supposed to come onto Black Adder land. But clearly, after the last few days, that was more of a suggestion than set in stone.
Robert knocked on her door and stepped back to wait. He was in front of me and slightly shielded me from view. I knew she would check out who we were before she felt comfortable enough to open the door. I was surprised when the door quickly opened, and a petite woman came flying out to hug Robert. She had long brown hair and brown eyes and was very attractive. She affectionately called out, "Gamma Robert," as she embraced him. Seeing it was a little unsettling to me.
She had just released him and stepped back to look up at him when she noticed me. "Who is this?" she asked as she slid her hand down his arm. She was letting me know that she had claimed him already, but that is not how things work, honey. I could tell at a glance that she didn't like me being here with Robert.
"Saoirse needed to speak to you, and she brought something for you," Robert replied before stepping away from her. I made her hand drop off his arm.
"I don't know her, and I can't imagine what she needs to speak to me about. Are you going to bring me my food order today, Robert? I can make us a meal if you are," Adra asked him as she gazed up at him.
"I am not. Gamma Warrick will bring it out to you. I am on a special detail for the next few weeks. I am sure that he would be more than happy to have a meal with you," Robert told her.
I watched as her lips thinned out at his answer. "But you always bring it out to me, Robert," Adra whined in response.
It didn't escape my notice that she had gone from Gamma Robert to just Robert. Her touching him like she did had actually pissed me off. Her trying to be more familiar with him by using his name like that pushed my anger even higher. I have never felt like this before, not even for James. I wanted to punish her for having lustful thoughts about Robert. She didn't try to hide them, she wanted me to see them, and that pissed me off even more. I cannot believe how immature she was in front of him.
Robert cleared his throat and tried again, "Saoirse is our guest. She has something that she went to great lengths to get as a gift for you. We will not stay very long. She has a few questions for you."
"I don't like strangers in my home, Robert, you know that. Besides, it is spelled, she can't enter," Adra replied before she started pouting.
"Actually, Robert, I don't need to ask her anything. The past few days have let us know the story of what happened that night. Alexei knows that Jana and Anika cannot be trusted. I don't believe that Adra is in danger here, as she has lived here for three years with no issues. Alexei is already dealing with the guilty parties in question. But I will give you what I brought for you, Adra. I got them for you, specifically for you to be able to properly protect yourself in the future. This close to the perimeter of the pack, you might very well need to use them one day," I announced.
I am done with her and her petty actions. I pulled out the two stakes I had in my bag and went to hand them to Adra. I got them for her. I was not childish enough to keep them from her just because she was going out of her way to make me jealous. My friend was already working on another batch of twenty more of them. I was getting them for Alexei and his team to use on the feral vampires. I know they go into some tough situations, and I don't want my son-in-law or his team to get hurt.
The moment she saw the two stakes in my hand, she paled. She wasn't playing around or trying to flirt with Robert anymore. She was honestly scared out of her wits. "I wasn't trying to scare you, Adra, or bring back bad memories. I just wanted you to be safe in the future. These stakes are made from the strongest wood in the world. They will not break if you need to use them," I told her in a softer tone. I felt bad for her because I realized that she wasn't pretending. I could feel the fear radiating out of her.
"I don't want them. You need to leave here and never return. Make her go away, Robert. Why did you bring her here? I don't want to be alone. Please do not leave me. I need you to stay. I'm so scared," Adra said as she turned her back towards me and wrapped her arms around his waist.
Robert looked uncomfortable, but he couldn't get her off of him. He would have to pull her off with a much harder grip to get her to release him. He looked helpless like he didn't know what to do. I could tell he wanted to stay with me, but I felt bad because they clearly had a close friendship between them. I didn't read Robert's mind earlier when she hugged him; I felt that it was unfair of me to see how he felt about Adra. I decided to make the decision easier on him.
"I will go back home until it is time for Cara to train. You can stay here and take care of Adra. If she doesn't want them, you can give them to Jaxon, and I can get them from him. I don't think I need an escort anymore. I know where I am going now, and we are safe in my home and the training area," I told him. I was gone before he could respond to what I said. It is clear that she likes him.
I sat at my kitchen island, waiting for my kettle to boil for my tea. I don't need a babysitter. I am probably one of the deadliest in the pack. Brenna can watch over us from now on. Robert can go back to his old duties. I don't want to feel the pain again, and I know I will. I won't allow anyone to hurt me like that again.
