CEO Proposed to His Ex-wife 99 Times -
Chapter 301 Uh-Oh
Katherine looked slightly confused. She did feel like something was wrong with Marshall, but what exactly it was she couldn't tell. "He just...he was just very nice to me yesterday," said Katherine after scratching her face for a while.
Kyle paused. "What do you mean? Hasn't he always been nice to you?"
Katherine stared blankly at Kyle. Well, Marshall was surely nice to her in front of Kyle - he could even be described as doting.
Katherine took in a deep breath. "I can't really explain it."
Hector looked at Katherine. "You should stop meeting him as often now that you are divorced. Gotta watch out for the gossip that might arise if you are ever caught." Katherine nodded in agreement. "Yup. My thoughts exactly."
Grabbing Margaret by the arm, Katherine drew over a chair and sat down. "What were you talking about just now? Kyle was looking pretty animated."
Kyle chuckled. "Nothing much. It's just that Hex has decided to quit his job."
Katherine stared in surprise. "For real? That's great! Have you decided to compete in the talent show instead?"
After some hesitation, Hector nodded slowly. "I wanted to give it a try."
Katherine raised a hand and patted Hector on the shoulder. "Go for it, then. We'll be your cheerleaders. You're a talented guy, and I'm sure you'll make it." "Yes, rest assured, because with talents like yours, you can make it anywhere."
With Margaret present, Kyle could already envision a poker game in his mind, so he yelled, "Hey, you guys wanna go back to my place and play some cards?" Feeling a bit down, Hector nodded after glancing at him. "Well then, let's go and have some fun." Because he was in need of some light fun so as to change his mood.
Margaret, having nothing better to do, wanted to hang out with Katherine a little longer. So the four of them went to Kyle's club.
The club wasn't usually in business during the day, but occasionally it would be chartered by some rich guys, since with the myriad of entertainment facilities, there was plenty to do for the guests, day or night. When the four of them arrived at the club, they were informed by a waiter that there was a group of people "enjoying themselves" in the backyard, and that the guest who chartered the club was Marcus Russell.
"Really?" said Kyle, waving a hand carelessly, "I know that guy. Don't mind them and leave them to their shenanigans then. We'll be upstairs, so we won't have to interact with them."
In the backyard, there was a music room, a billiard room, and a bowling room, among other things. Katherine had never paid those facilities a visit before, and she didn't intend to, either. Being a naturally sedentary person, she had no desire to visit places where she had to use her hands and move around a lot.
The four of them chose a private room upstairs and began the game.
Margaret, still, wasn't very good at it, so Katherine suggested that instead of hard cash, they should just cover their faces in strips of tissue paper as a punishment for losing. Kyle didn't care one way or another; he was happy as long as he had enough company for playing cards.
The quartet sat down, started playing, and got so invested in the game that they forgot the passage of time. As they were happily concentrated on the game, the door to the private room was abruptly kicked open.
"Nobody move!" someone shouted at the same time. The voice came so suddenly that Katherine was startled.
Kyle, being the out-of-luck person that he was today, had hardly won any round. Consequently, his face was covered in strips of tissues. Plucking these strips out of eyesight, Kyle yelled in the direction of the door. "Who the hell asked you to come in? Don't you see I'm in the midst of a game?"
Katherine yanked the tissue paper strips off her face and turned her head towards the door. The people who came in were wearing police uniforms. The gadgets in their hands she had only seen on TV. Katherine was surprised. That was a pretty impressive crowd for busting a couple of gamblers.
A male officer took the lead into their room, followed by a female one. Apart from traffic policewomen, that was the first time Katherine had ever seen a female police officer. Unsure what to make of the situation, Katherine handed over her strips of tissue. "We're not gambling money. Just tissue paper."
The male officer looked at Katherine without a word, while the female officer walked directly towards Kyle.
When he saw who was coming for him, Kyle couldn't help but jump out of the chair. "You bitch again."
Before Katherine could fully comprehend her moves, the female officer, with a flick of her wrist, pinned Kyle to the table with a bang. Her elbow pushing on Kyle's back, the officer said, "Watch your wording, man."
And suddenly, Katherine had the untimely thought that this officer was honestly a bit too cool.
Kyle was still mumbling. "Will you get off my back? You're always here but you never manage to replace anything suspicious. Bunch of losers you are, putting on a show for your bosses like this. I'm telling ya, if you can't replace anything this time, I won't let you get away with it easily..."
The male officer looked around the room. Everything on the poker table clearly indicated that they had been playing cards, plain and simple. So he walked up to the window to gaze into the backyard. Katherine instantly started feeling worried. She glanced at Kyle, who was still loudly demanding the female officer to let go of him.
After a short while, the female officer did let him go. Kyle, when he got back to his feet, tidied his clothes and fondled his big gold chain on purpose. Exasperated, he grumbled, "Now, let me write down your badge number..."
Kyle pointed a finger at the female officer, who, keeping a neutral face, scared his hand away with a slight raise of her own hand.
But Kyle didn't want to lose the verbal fight. "You have come here a million times, but have you found anything? No! You guys are making it really hard for me to do business, and just you wait while I file a complaint against you."
Katherine decided to sit back down after some consideration.
Kyle was still shouting gallantly when someone approached the door. "detective Johnson officer Mitchell, there's something found in the backyard."
That made Kyle shut up immediately.
Katherine, too, felt her heart sink. Exchanging a look with Hector, she saw in Hector's eyes what she was thinking herself.
Kyle shook himself out of his brief stupor and rushed out of the room before the policemen standing by the door could even react. It was only after the female officer yelled, "Keep an eye on him!" when they ran after Kyle in droves.
But Kyle wasn't trying to escape. Instead, he ran directly towards the backyard.
Turning to the female officer, Hector asked, "May we go check it out as well?"
The female officer stared at Hector briefly and, presumably because she recognized him, walked out of the room without a word. That would mean a "yes."
Thus, Katherine and the gang followed the policemen to the backyard. Upon entering, first one would see an empty space, and the inner contents would present themselves after one walked through a winding cloister.
Currently, there were several people crouching on the empty space, hands behind their heads. They were faced with policemen with their guns loaded, and a couple of detectives went further into the backyard to search.
When Katherine walked over, she saw someone lying on the ground. Kyle was stomping on him while shouting, "Did you plan this? Did you set me up? Tell me what you brought here!"
The man lay on the floor with his limbs sprawled out. His nose was bleeding from Kyle's attack, but somehow he was still smiling. That was a really disturbing scene.
It was the first time that Katherine ever saw someone like that. Stepping back, she asked, "Is he... is he on drugs?"
The female officer walked over and took a look at Katherine, Hector, and Margaret. "The three of you, go over there so they can take your statements. We will check the surveillance tapes, and if this matter doesn't concern you lot, you can call someone to bail you out."
Turning to an officer by her side, the female officer said, "Question them carefully."
The officer nodded and glanced at them. "Come with me."
Katherine opened her mouth, wanting to inquire about the other issue.
Calling someone to bail them out? Who was she supposed to call? She didn't really know anybody anyway.00000
