Chapter 732
Nash immediately strode out with determined steps.
---
A long time passed.
Nina felt like she was already dead. Surrounded by darkness, she couldn't tell where she was, only that she was terrified.
She didn't want to die. She hadn't heard her baby's cry and hadn't seen her baby's face. She didn't know if it was a boy or a girl, alive or dead. She had a strong will to survive, but her body was exhausted.
She didn't know how long she drifted in the void. Suddenly, she saw a dark figure, tall and indistinct, waiting ahead of her. Nina felt a chill of fear and asked, "Who are you?"
The figure didn't respond.
Unsure, she asked again, "Are you here to take me to hell?"
The figure remained silent.
Nina started to think it was a statue. Then, it moved slightly. She felt a flutter of fear but also found it absurd. She was a ghost now. Why should she fear another ghost?
She walked toward it. The figure turned around slowly, lifting its head. She saw a face without features, and she screamed. "Ah-"
Nina sat up, drenched in cold sweat. As her eyes opened, the terror of the nightmare lingered, but she realized she was still alive. The line between reality and the dream blurred, leaving her disoriented. She was in a hospital room. "Miss Walker, are you alright?" A nurse came in, looking concerned.
Nina, still catching her breath, asked, "What happened to me?"
Everything seemed too calm, as if nothing had happened. Nina wondered if she was dreaming. Giving birth, the near-death experience, it all felt surreal, like another nightmare.
"You're in the hospital. You've been unconscious for a week and are now recovering," the nurse explained.
"It wasn't a dream. I really was unconscious for a week," Nina processed the information. She reached out beside her but found nothing. "My baby, where is my baby?" The nurse hesitated.
Nina panicked. She remembered giving birth in the car but didn't know what happened afterward. "Where's Nash?" she demanded, "Where is my baby?"
The nurse walked over to comfort her. "Miss Walker, please stay calm. Mr. York will be here soon. Your baby is fine, in an incubator. Please try not to worry." "Really?" Nina's eyes searched the nurse's face. "Is he okay? Is it a boy or a girl?"
"It's a boy," the nurse said.
"I was right, it's a boy." Nina laughed with relief. "Can I see him?"
She started to get out of bed.
"Not yet," the nurse said quickly. "He's too small and needs to stay in the incubator for now. When the time is right, you'll be able to see him." "Okay." Nina sat back down. "As long as he's alive and healthy, that's all that matters."
She trusted the doctors and knew it was best to follow their instructions.
"Rest well. Mr. York will be here soon," the nurse reassured her before leaving.
Nina nodded, settling back into bed with a hopeful heart. She smiled, thinking of her baby. He was safe, and everything would be alright. But then, doubt crept in.
She shouldn't be alive, right?
The doctors had said giving birth would be her end.
How was she still here?
