Deragan paced his country house. “I hadn’t expected a confrontation with the demon so soon.” He found himself gesturing violently in frustration.

It puts her in his focus.

He knows I’m here.

“It was bound to happen.” Bast commented.

Deragan shoved a hand through his hair as he ground his teeth. But why so soon?

Bast watched him quietly. “Chavias truly tried to defend you?”

Deragan mulled it over. “It looked that way.”

“Maybe he’s not as lost to us as we thought…” It was the first vestige of hope Bast had shown in many years.

Hopefully not.

“I need that boy to do what he’s been wanting to for months.” Deragan snarled. Slamming a fist against the doorframe.

Cards are down. I just need the Worthington boy to toss the chips.

“It’ll be soon, Cap. He’s not patient.” Bast reassured. “He’s scared and stupid.”

Deragan nodded grimly.

“The demon is leaning on him. Likely threatening him.”

“I’m counting on it.” Deragan’s face hardened.

His urgency will make him careless. Stepping onto his stoop with Bast close behind Deragan jumped when he was abruptly doused in icy rain.

Retreating inside with a hiss, Bast began to chuckle.

Face upturned as he blinked, Deragan didn’t move. Expression turning violent. Of course…

“Your anger has brought us a nasty bout of weather.” Bast mocked. Aware it was unwise to prod the alpha, but unable to resist, nonetheless.

Shut up.

Hair limp over his forehead and shirt clinging, The Captain scowled. Blue eyes glowing.

“Try to be patient.” Bast reminded laughingly. Resting his head against the doorframe as his body heaved with his humor.

“Truly?” Deragan’s eyes widened in skepticism. “You are telling me to be patient.” Deragan was the embodiment of patience, as they were both aware.

Still grinning, Bast tilted his head. “Good to know even our alpha has a breaking point to his usual aplomb.”

Deragan tossed Bast a yellow-eyed glare which silenced the laughter.

“Are you quite finished?”

At his Captain’s dark look. Bast lowered his head in deference. “I apologize. I do understand the severity of the situation, Captain. You are always composed. Ever the strategist planning for every contingency with flawless precision. Only the Fallen could frustrate you to the point of unwittingly stepping into a storm of your own making.”

Deragan sighed and rolled his eyes Heavenward for patience.

Seeing the alpha was running low on tolerance, Bast asked soberly. “What do you want me to do?”
