FOREVER KNIGHTS: #6 Malevolent Attentions -
What I Cannot See
Several hours later, Sebastian heard his chamber door open and didn’t have to move from the window to know. “Hello, Brother.”
“Bast.” He greeted. “You knew she’d become angry with me?”
“I did.” Bast’s voice was amused as he uncoiled from the window and approached his twin. Dropping to the wooden chair at the table to toy with a small ceramic vase. “Tell me of your Riaura.”
“She’s suffering.”
“I know this.” Bast didn’t look up. “Your Riaura is kindred spirit to my valkyrie. Her passions running hot when spurred.”
“She hardly speaks to me anymore.”
“I’ve no doubt it’s you that holds her interest.” He reassured. Sensing it was what his twin needed to hear. “It’s merely a woman’s way to spurn the one she cares for.”
Pain burrowed into Bast and he slammed the vase down.
They discussed what Alazareth would do if Riaura continued course with Danbury.
“I must go. I worry for her at night.”
“When Cimmerii are out.” Bast acknowledged.
“But I will be back in the morning I need to tell you something.”
“What?”
“I’m not wholly sure.” Alazareth admitted. “I’m still processing it, myself.”
But Bast picked up one word ringing so loudly in Alazareth’s thoughts it echoed in Sebastian’s unbiddenly.
Chavias.
When finally, Alazar whispered thanks and left, Sebastian freely shucked his clothes and climbed into the four-poster. Savoring the texture of satin sheets smooth over his body. He remembered their warmth when she lay next to him.
I miss that heat. It was so much better then feeling neither heat nor cold.
He slept little, if at all. Dreams shadowed by thoughts of Radix.
The walking demon had crossed his mind increasingly more lately. An indication Radix was very active.
He’s no longer hiding in whatever hole he’s been curled up in.
What does that mean for Chavias?
Sebastian lay in the dark, rubbing his fingertips together until gold sparks luminesced. Climbing the air until crystallizing in a gold orb hovering over his face.
Bast thought of Chavias as he stared into it.
Chavias who was once one of us. The best kind.
Loyal to a fault. Reminding Bast so much of his twin.
Chavias shared Alazareth’s quiet wisdom but didn’t miss what passions were to be had. Like me.
The day of the Great Battle had taken much from the Forever Knights. Raese Merlinus was knocked from the sky and never seen again. Sebastian knew he’d see no reflection of Raese in the orb.
I’ve tried countless times…
So, he concentrated on Chavias. Still nothing.
Somehow both men were hidden from Bast’s sight…Or dead. But I doubt that for Chavias. He’s far too precious a tool for Radix to cast aside.
Sebastian sighed softly and lowered his hand, letting the orb slip from his fingers and clatter to the floor. It rolled only a short way across the wood before disintegrating in a puff of gold light and twining flakes.
