Innocent Little Runt -
Chapter 45
Lycer’s POV
I had failed. I had failed my job. I was supposed to protect Celestial and I failed.
I know Father would be disappointed in me if he saw that I protected her over the secret but I no longer care. It is because of him that I have to protect the secret. It shouldn’t even have to bare this secret in the first place. I haven’t even seen him in since I was little. I honestly don’t even remember how long ago exactly but I definitely know it wasn’t within the last few years. He doesn’t even deserve my silence.
Not to mention that his secret never should have been mine. He was the one who knocked up my egg downer when she was just 15. She was too young to take care of a child and he refused to be with her so she left me on his doorstep. Of course years later I hunted her down only to replace her dying of some disease. I gave up my plans to talk, yell, and question her. She was dying and there was two children surrounding her, twins. Then another man came over and kissed her forehead. She had a family.
I hate her for it. She abandoned me only to go and replace a different family. She was only 15 when she had me though so I wasn’t surprised. I felt kinda bad for her. She carried a bastard child in her stomach that she didn’t even ask for. Then she was turned down for the chance to start a whole family, the bastard child included. Father turned her down. I guess it always leads back to him.
I do have one thing to thank him for. Celestial. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be alive and no one would have been able to protect her. I could say that without him Malum would not be after the secret but I know that’s not true. Father would have f****d up at some point. Malum would have discovered the secret at some point in his sad life and would have gone after whoever else Father passed the secret onto.
No one needs to have that secret, that burden.
“Lycer,” a rough but still soft voice said. I look up to the cell door and see Auxilio. I sigh in relief. He is the only person here who doesn’t like Malum and he always sneaks me food and water whenever he can. He glances at Celestial with his green and brown eyes, that look like a cat eyes with the green as the pupil and brown for the rest of it, filled with worry.
“Auxilio, thank the Goddess you’re here.” He gave me a tight smile and looked behind him before looking back to me.
“If I get you two out of here will you do me a favor in return?” His skin, which was sickly pale with his veins showing every here and there, paled even further as if he was feeling nervous.
“What favor Auxilio?” He scowled a bit and closed his eyes, taking a breath to calm himself down.
“You’ll figure out when it comes to it. Now, do you want out of here or not?” I clenched my jaw and nodded.
“Fine but first can you grab anything that could keep her warm? Please.” He nodded and walked off. A few minutes later he came back with a large black coat that looked like it was made of some thick material. I smiled at him gratefully. “Thank you.” He unlocked the door and I smiled. He knew how to get into everywhere in this place. He hated that he is an experiment, created only for Malum to try and replace an answer to the secret. He would sneak around Malum and his goons with ease.
He threw me the coat and I set it down beside me. I slipped one of my arms under her legs and the other under her neck. I brought her closer to me and carefully slipped the coat on her. She whimpered as I accidentally hit her back and opened her eyes. I pulled her back a bit and smiled at her.
“Lycer, I don’t feel good.” My small smile fell.
I looked up at Auxilio, worried thoughts running around in my mind. “How long has it been since she has been here?”
“Four, maybe five days I think,” he said confused.
“Celestial, how long have you been apart from your mate before now?” She frowned and started to cough. I pulled her close to me as she stopped coughing for the time being.
“Not even a full day I think. Even when he has a lot of business he makes sure he is there before I fall asleep. I don’t like to be away from him and he doesn’t like to be away from me.” I smiled at her and got up, keeping her in my arms. I’ve seen this happen to mates before. They don’t leave each other’s sides for awhile after they first met and then when they don’t see each other for a while something goes wrong. It’s usually the male has trouble controlling his anger, his wolf, and any other thing that could lead to destruction. Usually the female gets really sick but sometimes it happens in reverse.
“Auxilio, please get us out of here and I’ll repay any favor that you want. I need to get her back to her mate before. . .” She dies. That is what happens in the most severe case. Those cases typically happen if the female’s body can’t handle the sickness or if the male does something so dangerous that it costs him his life, and in turn the female dies of heartbreak.
“Follow me then.” I followed him as he left the cellars, the first time that I’ve ever left without a serious dose of wolfsbane in my system. We followed him through twists and turns, stopping every now and then as a guard would walk past. Every now and then Celestial would hide her face in my neck or pull the coat she had on up to her lips to muffle her coughs.
“Don’t worry Celestial,” I mumbled. “We will be out of here really soon. I promise.”
