Into the Dark -
7
Calypso’s week goes by with little to no interaction with the King. She must have gotten farther under his skin than she realized. All the better to her; the farther he stays from her the more snooping she can do.
She has not had much time to do so during the last week due to all the preparations she has to take part in for the ball. As the new queen, it is now Calypso’s job to ensure that everything goes smoothly. She can not think of a bigger waste of her time.
Calypso grunts as one of her servants pulls the strings on her corset tighter than she thought possible. The bodice of her glittering gold gown fits snug on her middle. They decided to leave her hair down in loose curls, the matching golden veil attaching to her crown.
Her personal maid, who she found out was named Zara, ushers all the servants away and firmly shuts the door behind them.
Zara appears behind her in the mirror and places her wrinkly hands upon Calypso’s shoulders,” Listen to me very carefully, girl. All the attention will be on you tonight and you must not falter. The vampires will be watching you for any sign of weakness. Do not give them any reason to strike.”
Calypso’s heart races faster,” Zara? What do you mean?”
“The relations between humans and vampires is improving but do not let that fool you into thinking there is no more bad blood. They will not like that their new queen is human and there are some who will stop at nothing until you are dead.”
Calypso gives her a small nod and allows her to lead the way to the ball room.
Calypso soon understands Zara’s warning as she makes her way through the crowd. The vampires do not attempt to hide their disgust for her but she will not let her emotions show on her face. Taking Zara’s advice, Calypso keeps her face blank and looks only at the King as if all the others are below her. She must make them believe that she is confident and cold even as her heart is a raging storm on the inside.
Her husband holds out a hand to her as she nears him. She places her hand in his delicately as he helps her to her throne that matches his.
“Commence the festivities.”
With his words, the music begins as does the dancing. The queen and king watch in silence as vampires laugh and twirl to the song. Colorful dresses swish around high heeled feet as the men lead the women through the steps.
Calypso has never been one for dancing but she would gladly accept any invitation she is offered if it gets her far away from the man sitting next to her.
" You look lovely by the way,” he informs her.
" Thank you,” her reply is quiet as she peaks up at him through her lashes.
Before he can say more, Jasper approaches the thrones.
" Pardon my interruption,” he gives Calypso a smile before continuing,” Would you like to dance, my queen?”
She can feel the king’s dark stare on the side of her face waiting for her answer,” I would like nothing more,” she replies as she takes his hand.
She does not care if it angers the Vampire King. Jasper had been her only friend in her past and she needs a friend in this moment.
“I may be going out on a limb here but I have a feeling your new husband is not very fond of me,” Jasper says, humor lacing his voice.
Calypso lets out a laugh,” Where would you get such an idea from? In fact, I think he may fancy you more than he does his own wife.”
Jasper scoffs,” How tragic! The poor girl.”
" Indeed, a tragedy it is. However, can you blame the poor man? I’ve heard she has foul attitude and she is not the best company.”
" Oh yes. I can very well see that.”
" Watch it, Jasper,” laughter fills her voice; she could not remember the last time she felt this comfortable with someone.
" Listen my queen, there is a more pressing matter I must trouble you with,” his tone grows serious and his smile fades,” Is there a more private place we can discuss this?”
“Yes, of course,” she takes his hand leading him through the ball and into the hall.
She tries every door they pass until finally replaceing one unlocked. Calypso makes sure to lock the door behind her and listen for anyone following before gesturing for Jasper to continue.
" I bear news from your father. First off, he would like to know how your mission is coming along?”
Leaning back against the mahogany deck in the middle of the room, Calypso clasps her hands in front of her,” It is coming along slowly. As you may have guessed already, the king is not very forthcoming with his secrets.”
" As is to be expected. Keep your eye on the prize, yes?′ she gives him a small nod,” Good! Now, you father has gained new information from his spies. It seems as though this marriage has caused a bit of unrest in the kingdom. One man in particular seems to be very opposed to it.”
He hands her a file before continuing,” Our spy tells us that they call him the liberator. Apparently he is attempting to start a rebellion against you. So far the only thing stopping them is their fear of the King.”
She listens closely while flipping through the file. A picture of a bald man with a scar cutting across one eye is clipped on the front page. His picture is enough to make her uncomfortable, she can only imagine how she would feel if saw him in person.
“Is there anything else you wish to inform me of?” she places the file on the desk behind her deciding to go through the rest of it later in the night.
" Unfortunately there is. I came to warn you. We believe he is going to attempt to take your life. Tonight.”
The news brings a shock to her heart,” That is unfortunate indeed. Thank you for telling me Jasper.”
The ringing of a bell eleven times interrupts their conversation.
" I believe that is my queue to leave,” he tips his head to her,” take care of yourself my queen.”
She turns her back to him as he exits softly closing the door behind him.
Opening the file once again, Calypso thumbs through the soft pages in search of anything that may stand out to her. Movement in the garden catches her eye and she quickly makes her way to the window behind the desk. Slowly pulling the curtain to the side, she spots a man standing in the trees that surround the kingdom. Shadows hide his identity due to the late hour; preventing her from making out any of his defining features.
The door opens seconds later and softly closes again.
She calls out without turning towards the sound,” Did you have more to inform me of, Jasper?”
" I don’t actually,” her husband’s replies with his deep velvety voice,” Though I do have questions for you that I require answers for.”
Calypso quickly spins around nearly tipping over from the momentum. Though the king’s face is blank, his eyes are blazing with barely contained rage. He is currently leaning against the door as if he has no care in the world; however, Calypso knows better.
" Did you enjoy yourself tonight, my love?” he pushes off the door and slowly stalks towards her.
Her heart pounds as she presses herself against the window in an attempt to keep herself from fleeing,” I did, thank you for asking.”
He places his hands on the desk leaning his weight on them, only inches away from the file Jasper had given to her,” That’s great to hear. Though it was quite disappointing how quickly you disappeared. Important matters to be discussed I assume?”
" Hardly. Jasper just-” Calypso had no excuse to offer him as she assumed she would have more time to ponder before being confronted,” He was merely filling me in on what I missed back home.”
" Is that so? Anything exciting you wish to share?”
She fiddles with the hem of her dress as she unconsciously glances at the file only inches away from his left hand,” Just boring human matters. Nothing that would be of interest to you I am sure.”
The king watches her carefully for a moment before glancing down at the desk finally noticing the file. His eyes fall back onto her and for a moment it is as if time stops. She takes this moment to properly observe her husband; he fits villain role a bit too well for her comfort. Time starts back up at full speed as Calypso leaps forward in an attempt to snatch it up before he gets it.
Unfortunately for her, vampires are known to be significantly faster than humans. This proves to be true when the Vampire King swiftly snatches the folder away from her reach.
" That is mine. Give it back,” her knuckles turn white from how hard she is clutching the edge of the desk.
He gives her a dry laugh as he rounds the desk and pins her body against it with his own,” You expect for me to heed your orders when you cannot seem to do the same for me? I’m sorry my darling but I cannot grant what you wish.”
" You don’t understand,” she becomes more desperate as he tilts his head to the side waiting for her to continue,” that is a gift from my family. Please.”
He says nothing as he pulls a set of keys from his pocket. He unlocks a draw next to her and drops the file inside before locking it again and returning the keys to his pants.
Frustration floods her heart; she cannot seem to catch a break,” Give me the file, asshole,” she demands through clenched teeth.
He leans down until his face is hovering over her his arms caging her body under his. Despite her anger, a treacherous part of herself almost reaches up to push a stray lock of hair away from his face.
" I do not think you are in the position to be making demands, my queen. I would watch your tone with me. Do not think I have forgotten your latest act of disobedience.”
With his face so close to hers, Calypso cannot help but admire how attractive this man is. Due to his body pressed so closely to hers, she can feel every line of his muscular body against her much softer one.
Her blood rushes through her veins and she has no doubt he can hear her fast beating heart,” Fuck you and your rules, King of the leeches.”
He lets out a low growl at her words. She knows she is pushing her luck with him but for some reason she can not control her mouth in his presence. She does not understand the effect he has on her only that he could rial her up like no other.
In one long swipe, the Vampire King launches every object resting upon the desk to the floor. Calypso grips her husband’s hair to keep from tipping backwards as he roughly lifts her onto the now empty desk.
“Lie down,” the Kings tone leaves no room for argument and his wife does not dare object.
She slowly lowers herself until her head softly connects with the wood.
The edge of the desk digs into the back of her knees as the King presses himself between them, her lower legs dangle uselessly over the side,“Keep your arms above your head. If you move them I will make this much worse. Understand?”
Calypso stays silent, not trusting her voice but she obeys his command none-the-less.
Her husband savagely tears open her dress expose her undergarments to him; his voice harsh against the still air,” When I ask you a question I expect an answer. Am I clear?”
Her hands desperately clench her hair to keep from covering herself from him as she nods in answer.
His calloused hands sensuously gripping her thighs,” use your words, princess,” he bites out with barely contained desire.
Failing to ignore the flush crawling up her face she quickly rasps out a pathetic ‘yes’.
He hums in approval as his hands slowly inch upwards,” So you are capable of following orders.”
“Fuck y-” the insult dies in her throat as the King thrusts a finger into her sensitive core.
His mouth whispers vehemently in her ear,” I have had enough of your bitter attitude, my wife. If you were that sexually frustrated, you should have just told me so.”
Every insult swarming Calypso’s head drifts away when her husband adds a second finger to his slow torture.
Noticing her squirming, the vampire quickens his pace; skillfully curling his fingers right when she needs it. Calypso feels herself begin to climb to that sweet oblivion. Craving release, she replaces herself opening up more to her husband allowing for smoother movements. Soft noises escape from her mouth despite her attempt to stay quiet. The queen becomes all too aware of the hardness of her husband pressed. against her inner thigh. This awareness causes her to climb higher and higher as images of him hovering above her flash across her closed eyes.
A knock sounds at the door halting her husband’s frantic movements. The King does not answer for a moment, too caught up in staring his mate down.
The second knock seems to waken him from his frozen state,” Enter!”
The King reluctantly removes his hand from her and does his best to cover her with her torn dress. He does not move away from his wife and he does not allow her to move either.
" Forgive the intrusion, my lord. We’ve had a breech in the castle. We have caught the intruder; he waits in the dungeon for your interrogation,” the king’s general quickly explains himself.
" Send Zara to accompany Calypso back to her chambers and wait for me on the front lawn.”
The door to the king’s study opens and closes once more.
The silence that follows the general’s departure is deafening and lasts longer than Calypso can bear,” Don’t you have some place you need to be, King?”
He runs a hand through her hair before answering,” I want you to go straight to your room and only your room. Do not answer the door for anyone other me, understood?”
Calypso does not answer. After all, it is not like she has much of a choice since she will be babysat by her maid.
“My patience for you is wearing thin, my love. You will not like the outcome should your attitude persist.”
Again, she says nothing. The tightening her chest would not allow her to even if she wanted to.
He turns and strides out the door leaving it open in his wake.
