Chapter Fifty Two

Eve told Blair to ask the Alphas to gather in the lobby of a nearby hotel. She gave no information as to why, she simply claimed Flint had asked them to do it. Eve then took a deep breath and approached the microphone with Joshua by her side.

“Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate this years Call. As Luna of StarLight, I just wanted to congratulate those of you found your mates. Also, to those of you who didn’t, keep coming. It will happen when the moon goddess decides it’s time.”

Her speech served to quiet the remaining crowd. They clapped for her and she waited for the applause to fade before she spoke again.

“Now, the Call is coming to an end a bit earlier this year due to the security concerns we’ve all faced this year. It’s time to start making our way back to our territories and families. Thanks again, everyone. I wish you all luck in your lives going forward.”

She stepped back from the podium and watched the guests. They calmly accepted what she had to say and they were dispersing as they’d been told. Each wolf was either making their way to meet the families of their mates or they were heading home alone.

“Luna?” Joshua drew her attention.

“We’ve had a small breach in security. Will you insure everyone leaves this place? I need to go check in with the Alphas and their families.” Eve whispered hastily.

“Yes, Luna.” He nodded.

She thought about the last time there was a security breach and Joshua had been left alone. Her eyes got caught on the light gleaming from his metal wheels.

“When you’re finished, and sure that everyone is gone, come to the hotel as well. I’m going to leave a warrior here with you to help.” Eve added.

“I don’t need a sitter.” Joshua grumbled.

“I know. This will just ease my mind.” She smiled at him.

“Yes, Luna.” He shook his head.

Eve stepped off the stage and almost immediately ran into Anna.

“Luna.” The specialist nodded.

“Anna? What are you doing here?” Eve gestured for her to follow as she walked toward the hotel.

“I got back a few hours ago. Something is happening. I can feel it.” She explained.

“There’s been a breach. Nothing is confirmed yet. Stay with Elder Joshua.” She nodded as she entered the building.

The Alphas and their mates were gathered in the sitting area of the lobby. Daniel and his mate were whispering together. Faye and Becca were seated, watching Ben. Her father was having a silent conversation with Alpha Noah. He wore a serious face while the wolf sat in front of him with his chin raised.

“Hello.” Eve greeted the room.

All eyes spun to face her.

“What’s happening?” Daniel asked immediately.

“Evie...” Faye stood and approached her.

She knew there were warriors missing. Jay must have told her before he went with Flint.

“Why are we here, Evie?” Ben probed.

It felt like the walls were closing in on her. Everyone needed answers and there were none for her to give yet. Noah’s presence flowed through her chest, drawing her gaze.

Be calm, girl. Explain. His voice was gruff when it entered her mind.

She took a deep breath and squared her shoulders.

“A warrior hasn’t reported in on time and we can’t reach him. The same for a warrior from GraySky. Alphas Jay and Flint have gone to search the sector and replace out what-”

Eve was cut off by the pained grunt of Daniel. He and his mate met gazes. They were sorrowful and angry. The next second, Faye grabbed her mouth and inhaled sharply. Ben took his wife’s hand with furrowed brows.

“What’s-”

Again she was silenced. This time Eve was caught off guard by the feeling of pain in her chest. Like something was being torn away from her. She knew immediately what had happened but she didn’t want to believe it. Noah growled and shook off his own sensation of loss. Daniel snarled angrily, drawing all eyes.

“They killed one of my people!” He snapped.

“Calm down!” Ben replied sharply. “Someone killed one of us all.”

“Who? Why?!” Becca clutched her husband’s hand tightly.

“I knew we shouldn’t have come here!” Daniel roared angrily as he turned his furious gaze to Eve.

A loud, thundering bark cut through the argument. Noah now stood in the middle of the room with a furrowed brow. Everyone understood what he meant to say. In-fighting should wait until after the danger has passed, not before. Daniel was still baring his teeth at StarLight’s Luna. He was clearly outraged.

“Everything is under control! Wait for-” Eve clenched her fists when she was interrupted again.

“We can’t wait!” Daniel’s Luna shouted.

The room divulged into overlapping arguments once more.

“Enough!” Eve’s shriek cut through the air.

She released a wave of power. Her nerves were high, her strength was fluctuating, and the power she was trying to contain was rising in his chest. Somewhere in the forest, she could feel her mate getting more and more anxious.

Everyone turned to her. She was radiating with intensity. None dared to speak as they watched her take a deep breath.

“Our remaining members have been sent off. This part of the territory is being secured. Flint and Jay will be here soon to explain the situation.”

Eve turned her eyes back to Daniel. He was still glowering. She narrowed her gaze at him.

“If you want to go. Go.” She growled.

Silence reined over the group. Eve struggled to hold in her beast. The animal was demanding freedom. She howled, snarled, and thrashed against the mental binds restraining her. Again, the Luna took several deep breaths through her nose.

“Evie, you okay?” Becca whispered as she approached her.

“I’m fine.” She sighed tiredly.

Joshua entered the room with Anna beside him. He went directly to Eve.

“The territory is secured.” He stated quietly.

“Great. Now we just have to wait for Flint.” She replied, turning her eyes back to the doors.
