Chapter Eighty Eight

While Flint had been searching for the pull in his chest, StarLight had been busy. Anna had been coordinating the search for Kirkwood with Peter. The tracker had been following Flint’s trails and movements. This had led the pair to the next providence, though the town was still evading them.

Elijah had mostly returned to the Alpha seat. He was doing his son’s duties with Duncan by his side as acting Beta. The commander had been organizing the search for Eve and trying to deal with Alpha Jay from GraySky. He was worried about his sister and his animosity toward Flint was growing with every day that she was missing.

Johnny and Lynn had taken a team of six warriors to search the surrounding mountain peaks. They had reached one and found nothing. They were now moving to the next mountain top. Graham had been out of StarLight territory, setting his mother up in the valley and burying his father. He was scheduled to return soon, even if he wouldn’t be able to retake his place in the pack yet.

All warriors had been recalled from the valley in the hopes of bringing down the tension on the searches. GraySky continued being diligent, though they were less obvious. The chances of revealing their true natures had been reduced, as had the violence they were showing the rogues. It was as if they were losing hope to replace Eve, even if the Alpha family of GraySky couldn’t.

The Luna of StarLight was still being held captive in the cabin. Eve woke up early that morning. At first, it was nearly like all the others. Bastian was sitting in the rocking chair by the window with his feet propped on the end of the bed.

He was asleep with his arms crossed and his head hanging down on his chest. Though, like usual, it seemed that if she were to move a muscle he would awaken. Bastian was such a light sleeper that even the sound of the mattress springs squeaking would wake him.

However, at this moment, she felt the need to move. To stand. To do anything. Eve couldn’t sit still. There was a feeling in her every muscle that she was unable and unwilling to ignore. She was restless, as was the she-beast within her mind.

Eve crept out of bed slowly, hoping she wouldn’t wake Bastian. Something was happening and, until she could figure out what it was, she wasn’t involving her captors. Eve peeked out the window beside Bastian. The sight of the lightening sky send excited goosebumps across her skin.

The Luna slowly opened the door before sneaking to the front porch. She passed by Onyx, who was sleeping on the couch in the living room. As the fresh air touched her skin, her wolf began to howl in her mind. Though the animal couldn’t burst out of her mental cage any longer, but it was obvious that she wished to.

Her heart was pounding in her chest as she stared at the rocky mountainside in the distance. The power that had bee welling up inside her was building, as if she were running on four paws. Her breath caught on a sight in the distance as a familiar howl erupted through the air. A large, white wolf had fallen to the ground.

Now, he seemed to watching her. Eve could feel the electricity under her skin, flowing freely through her mind. Flint. How long had he been there? Why wasn’t he standing or moving? Questions flooded her mind but the urge to rush to him was all she could focus on.

It’s our love! He’s here! We have to go! The wolf was leaping around excitedly in Eve’s mind.

We can’t. The Luna clenched her fists.

We have to! Run! Move! The animal growled.

Without the tea, we’ll get worse. The pup needs it. She replied internally.

Alpha could have the solution! We have to go! NOW! The she-beast was snarling aggressively.

If he had the solution, he’d come to us! He isn’t! Eve grinded her teeth together, unable to look away from the white wolf in the distance.

NO! RUN! GO! The animal was incorrigible.

Eve had lost her ability to stop herself. She took a single step toward the yard when a hand fell on her shoulder. She jumped as static filled her veins. The electricity she’d felt was still there, beneath the surface. It pulsated through her, unrelenting.

“Evie.” Bastian turned her to face him. “What are you doing out here?”

“I-” She couldn’t think.

All Eve could do was stand there with her eyes on Bastian. If he saw Flint in the distance, he would move the Shadow pack. And Eve right along with them.

“Are you okay?” He felt her rising anxiety through the StarLight mindlink.

“I wanted to run.” Eve stated awkwardly.

“You know the sedum tea has to clear out of your system first. Let me make you breakfast.” Bastian stepped back inside.

The Luna cast one more glance at her mate in the distance before forcing herself to follow Bastian into the cabin. She sat at the kitchen table as the rogue Alpha began grinding the meat he’d gotten from the butcher. Eve stared at the tabletop, her mind was clearly elsewhere.

“Something is weird. What is it?” Bastian sat across from her and gave her the meat.

“I just-” Eve paused. She was suddenly fearful of telling him anything.

“Evie?” He tilted his head, watching her curiously.

“I want to talk to you but I don’t want to...” Eve sighed. “I don’t know.”

Bastian examined her for a moment. He seemed to be confused before his dark eyes grew warm. A smile pulled at one side of his mouth, though he immediately covered it.

“Talk to me, Evie.” He eventually stated.

She narrowed her eyes at him pensively before releasing a sigh.

“I... I know that you brought me here and you’ve been taking care of me. I get that and I know why. My pup will be powerful. Very powerful. And you think you know me from before I went to StarLight, or whatever.”

Eve kept talking as though the more she rambled and explained, the better Bastian’s reactions would be to her thoughts.

“But what’s going to happen next? I want to know what you're planning.” She probed.

Bastian sat back and looked her over for a moment. He had a thoughtful expression. Eve simply stared at him, waiting for an answer.

“I’m going to take care of you, Evie. You and the pup.” Bastian eventually stated.
