Love and Chaos Series -
The Alpha King’s Ugly Bride Chapter 89
Xavier couldn't stand the thought of any harm coming to Mia. He had made provision for more security since his trial began, so no harm came to her when she stepped out of the Palace but failed to consider the harm that could happen within the palace. He failed to protect her tonight. He didn't see the attack coming, but he should have. He would have lost her tonight, and it would have been his fault. The thought of losing her haunted him and shrunk his heart terribly. He needed to keep her safe at all times. "You can't stay here. Come stay with me tonight," he suggested.
She hesitated because she felt unsure about his suggestion. "I haven't slept in your bed in the last two days."
He nodded. "And I'm sorry about that. You were right, I was selfish, but it was because I didn't want you going down with me. I love you too much to want that."
She nodded, no longer wanting to fight after everything. "I understand."
He exhaled in relief. "Good, then come with me to my room and stay there. That way, I can watch over you."
She gave her consent, and he took her into his arms and brought her into his room, which felt warmer than the last time she was here. He laid her in bed and departed to the bathroom and after a while; he returned with a bowl and a small towel in his hands. He cleaned her face and the side of her rib, which had already healed up, and pulled the covers over her body so she could stay warm. He leaned in and placed his soft lips on her head.
"I am sorry this happened to you. I should have been here to stop it, to stop him."
"You didn't know, and I'm fine. You stepped in and scared him away." She chuckled.
The sound melted his heart. "You held your own. You were fierce and strong and you are what it means to be brave. You don't know how hard I strive just to match your energy. She beamed at him. "I didn't know you kept an eye on me."
He leaned in and nipped at her bottom lips, mumbling, "I've had my eye on you for a very long time."
He pulled away, and she pressed her lips together. In her eyes, he saw her need and knew she wanted him to stay with her, but couldn't bring herself to say the words.
He needed to check in with the guards. The security of the palace was important, but she also needed him. She might not be trembling from the event that just happened, but that didn't mean she wanted to be left alone. Her eyes told him all he needed to hear. He scooped further into bed and stayed beside her there. She glanced up at him with narrowed brows. "Aren't you going to meet with the guards?" She must have read his mind and perceived the thoughts about meeting up with the guards. "Not yet," he said. "It can wait."
Mia fell asleep with him, rubbing her shoulders tenderly and realising she'd fallen asleep. He departed to the guards, only to receive disappointing news. The guards' search to replace the intruder had been fruitless, and the intruder had escaped. He told them to keep the search on till the morning. He left them and return to his wife and Queen to stay with her just like she needed.
He glanced at the bed and saw her eyes shut, sleeping, and he made his way over to the couch beside his study table and dropped in it. He kicked off his shoes and laid his head against the arm. His arm rested against his forehead and his mind raced as he thought back to the intruder on the loose.
If these attacks came for him, he would have understood. Most people hated him and would give anything to see him dead. The queen, however, was different, but whoever went after her did so because they knew killing her would mean killing him as well. One thing was certain though, whoever it was will die in his hands.
The thought of her getting hurt terrified him. Yes, she was the Luna which made her the second most feared being in the kingdom, but yet she could get hurt and she did get hurt tonight. Any alpha in the kingdom intending to kill could overpower and likely do so. Mia was Luna, but that didn't make her invincible. His enemies knew this too.
"What are you doing?" Mia's sleepy voice dragged out and Xavier dropped his hand from his head and turned to see those adorable eyes fixated on him.
His heart skipped a beat at the sight of her. "Nothing," he replied, sounding too dumb for his liking.
"I see that... why aren't you in bed?"
"Because I didn't want to disturb your peace."
"You're disturbing my peace by staying there," she said flatly.
"Oh."
"Get in bed already. I don't have to spell it do I?"
He swallowed hard and rose to his feet, dragging his feet over to the bed. She yanked the bedsheet away to give him room on the bed and he entered, wasting no time. She snuggled closer to his body. The heat he felt radiating from her body made him sigh happily. She placed her hand on his chest while adjusting her head on him, and the touch of her hand sent waves of emotions rushing through him.
He missed her. He missed this. He missed having her in bed, curled around him this way. Feeling the heat leave her body and engulf him.
She was mad at him two days ago after he revealed his plans to her and he didn't know how to reach back to her. Perhaps because it was the wrongest of time to reveal his plans, or maybe she didn't want to leave. He didn't want her to leave either. He needed her to stay with him forever and prayed she felt the same way too.
This felt perfect, and so was she.
