Chapter 49
Lilian gaped at Andrew in bewilderment. She didn’t know how she had crossed him. “Mr. Miller, I…”
“Did I not make myself clear?” Andrew asked gravely.
Lilian’s knees went weak at the dangerous warning in his voice. She quickly said, “No, Mr. Miller. I only came to deliver the souvenirs like Natalie told me to.”
“Didn’t they put you through training before you started your job?” he countered.
The blood drained from Lilian’s face as she recalled the first rule of the employee handbook–employees were strictly prohibited from engaging in any conduct that could be construed as bribing their direct superiors.
But shouldn’t Lilian be an exception to that rule given her relationship with Andrew? Surely, gifts from her would not be construed as an act of bribery.
Even as the argument crossed her mind, Lilian dared not voice it out to Andrew. She stammered, “I–I’m sorry, Mr. Miller. This won’t happen again, I promise. Please give me another chance. I’ll…”
She would have continued pleading her case if she hadn’t caught the deadly look Andrew gave her, causing her to swallow the rest of her
words.
Jason entered the office shortly after receiving word of Lilian’s
actions. He glared at her as he snapped, “Didn’t you hear Mr. Miller?
Get out!”
“Y–Yes! Right away!” Lilian nodded and scampered off before she aggravated Andrew’s foul mood even more.
Chapter 49
Upon sensing the tension in the air, Jason quickly set the work documents down on Andrew’s desk and skedaddled.
Left alone, Andrew glanced at Madelyn and saw her pinning him with a begrudging stare. He rose from his chair and sat next to her on the couch. Pulling her onto his lap, he gently flicked the tip of her nose, asking, “Are you angry?”
“No,” Madelyn lied.
He chuckled. “Little liar. I can tell you’re mad. Your red nose gave you away.”
The tip of her nose turned red whenever she was angry. Blaming her traitorous nose, Madelyn looked down at her lap and said nothing.
-She wasn’t mad at him but at herself. It seemed she was just as clueless about her husband as she had been in her previous life.
Natalie was a celebrity managed by Miller Group’s entertainment agency, yet Madelyn never knew Andrew had personally helped her build her career. He was the driving force of Natalie’s flourishing career and reputation in the last few years.
The more Madelyn thought about this, the angrier she became. Her eyes were rimmed red as if to match the tip of her nose.
“A penny for your thoughts, Maddie?” Andrew probed softly when she did not explain her anger even as tears glistened in her eyes.
He knew why she was angry, and he was secretly happy about the reason. He liked that her emotions were proof of her feelings for him.
Madelyn was so furious she could not speak. Tears cascaded down. her cheek as she mumbled, “I–I don’t like you.”
She struggled to get off his lap, but Andrew’s warm hand cupped the back of her head and held her firmly in place. The next second, she felt the cool touch of his lips on her face, kissing away her tears.
And yet, she cried harder. The tears were like rivulets now, clouding her vision as she met Andrew’s amused gaze. She froze before she flew into a rage. “Don’t you dare laugh, you meanie!”
“There, there, darling. Hush,” Andrew murmured sweetly. His heart was full, and he stopped teasing her
She glowered at him as if he had severely wronged her. He wiped her tears away and felt her tiny frame shuddering as the last of her sobs went out of her. “Nothing’s going on between me and Natalie.”
He delivered the explanation so matter–of–factly that Madelyn responded out of instinct and anger, “Yeah, right. Then why did you personally invest in her career?”
Natalie was revered like a queen in the company because of him, yet he had the nerve to insist that nothing was going on between them.
Andrew sighed at the predicament that confronted him. As pleased as he was with Madelyn’s reaction, he felt bad for putting her through such emotional turmoil. “Don’t you remember Natalie at all?”
Madelyn’s expression darkened at his question. She asked sharply,” Why the hell should I remember her?”
Andrew pressed a palm to his forehead. “Because she’s my cousin.” Madelyn fell silent at once.
