"Who is it?" Lara called out from the living room.

"Don't say a word," Matt warned Emilia.

"So, you're the stalker."

"I hate that word. I wasn't stalking you, by the way. I was just letting you know that I'll come back for you and now, here I am."

"What do you think you're doing, Matt?" She asked him softly. "How do you think this is going to end?"

"It's going to end with you following me quietly and going back to Wyoming with me. Or we could go to Connecticut together. Do you remember how much fun it was when we were together in that hotel, making love all night?" "That wasn't a fun memory for me," she replied flatly. "it was a painful time in my life when I was searching frantically for my missing child."

"Well, you've found her, haven't you? Now, stop talking and come with me."

"What the hell are you doing, Matt? What's your plan? To kidnap me? Do you think you can even get away with that? Is that how you intend to display your so-called love for me?"

"Shut up! Stop talking! This is all your fault. You came into my life and messed up my mind. I can't think straight anymore. All I want is you and nobody else!"

His rage scared her. He was talking and acting like a man who had lost his mind. The gun in his hand was probably loaded and it even made the situation worse. If he mistakenly pulled the trigger, she'd be dead within seconds. "Is that Matt?" Chloe asked, coming into the kitchen.

As soon as Matt saw her, he aimed the gun at her and fired it. Emilia screamed while Chloe crumpled to the floor. Their parents came running and when they saw their younger daughter on the floor with blood pouring out of her chest, they screamed.

"What have you done?" Emilia yelled at Matt.

"This is all your fault. You should have just followed me when I asked you to!" He shouted back.

"Andrew, call 911," Lara shouted at her husband. He struggled to his feet and hurried back to the sitting room to make the call.

"Let's go now," Matt said to Emilia.

She glared at him. "I'm not going anywhere with you, so you might as well shoot me too."

"No, please!" Lara begged her daughter. "Go with him, please, Don't let him shoot you."

"Mrs Beaumont? Are you ok?"

"Who's that?" Matt asked her.

"My bodyguard," she replied coldly. "I told you there's no way you'll get away with this."

"Don't tempt me, Emilia. Come here, right now!"

"Mrs Beaumont? Was that a gunshot we heard outside?"

"I'm in the kitchen!" she yelled.

Matt lifted the gun and fired two shots into the ceiling, raining down dust and plaster peelings. Emilia and her mother screamed and cowered on the floor.

"Mrs Beaumont!" the bodyguard yelled as he ran to the kitchen.

"Go with him!" Lara screamed at Emilia.

The bodyguard burst into the kitchen just then and Matt fired a shot at him, catching him on the left shoulder. The big guy grunted and fell to the floor while clutching his injured shoulder.

Lara was screaming hysterically now, while Emilia's knees buckled with fear. As she sank to the floor, Matt grabbed her around the waist and dragged her out of the kitchen through the broken window.

She was so numb from all the shooting that she couldn't even speak or scream. She allowed Matt to drag her to a waiting van which he pushed her into before getting behind the wheel.

"This could have gone differently, you know," he said as he started the vehicle. "if you hadn't been so stubborn... if you'd just listened to me and obeyed me the first time I told you to follow me, nobody would have gotten hurt." "You shot my sister..." she said in a daze.

"She startled me," he replied defensively.

"And you shot my bodyguard..."

"He deserved it. Now, be quiet and let me think, ok?"

He drove the van away from the spot where he'd parked it in the backyard of her family home. Emilia couldn't move a muscle as her mind tried to process everything that had just happened.

Matt wedged the gun between his thighs as he drove. His forehead was bathed in sweat and he looked nervous.

Emilia's mobile phone began to ring inside her pants pocket, jarring her back to reality. She grabbed it and checked to see who was calling her.

"Don't answer that," Matt said quickly.

"It's Kane. He must have arrived in Qatar."

"I don't give a shit if he's in heaven. I said don't answer it!"

"What you're doing doesn't even make sense, Matt. What is this? Is this what you call love?"

He wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand and said, "Yes, Emilia. This is love. I'm crazy about you and I can't imagine living the rest of my life without you in it."

"But I don't love you, Matt. I never did. I was only with you because I stupidly thought that was a way to get back at Kane for hurting me. I shouldn't have done that."

"So, what are you saying? That what happened between us was a mistake?"

"Yes, Matt. That is exactly what I am saying. It shouldn't have happened. We shouldn't have happened. I acted irrationally and I apologize for using you to quench my anger back then."

He glanced at her before facing the road again. "You're talking nonsense. You loved me too, Emilia. Don't even deny it. You loved me and would have continued to love me if that useless husband of yours hadn't forced you back into the marriage."

"He didn't force me back, I willingly reconciled with him because I still loved him. I still love him and I always will."

"Shut up! Stop saying that!"

She bit her lip and stopped talking. Matt was acting like a madman and she didn't want to say anything that could trigger him and make him even more agitated than he already was.

Her phone started ringing again and it was still Kane. She looked at the phone in her hand and silently debated whether to damn the consequences and answer the call or - Matt grabbed the phone from her hand and threw it out of the window as the van continued to race down the road.

"What the hell!" She screamed at him. "why did you do that?" "Because you were going to answer it after I told you not to."

Emilia looked around and realized that they were on an unfamiliar highway, driving further into a road that was flanked by dark woods on both sides.

"Where are you taking me?" She asked him.

"Everdale Ridge. It's a secluded spot in the woods just ahead. One of my cousins has a cabin there. You and I will remain there until I replace a better place for us to settle in."

Anger welled up in her at the thought of what he was planning. He wanted to make her his sex slave and hide in a place where nobody will replace her.

Emilia glared at Matt's profile as he drove the van furiously down the road and she wondered how she ever found him attractive. He was a deeply disturbed man that she had made the costly error of getting intimately involved with. "Trust me, Emilia, you and I are going to be very happy together," he said without looking at her. "I know you're going to miss your kids but with time, you'll get used to not seeing them anymore."

"Don't you dare talk about my children," she growled and jumped on him.

Matt was caught off guard by her sudden attack. She grabbed him around the neck and began to choke him. She would rather die than let this lunatic kidnap her and make her his sex slave.

"What the "he gasped and freed one of his hands from the steering wheel to fight her off.

She refused to back down and kept struggling with him. By now, the van was weaving across the road in a zigzag motion as they fought.

"Stop it, you idiot!" he yelled at her. "Are you trying to get us killed?"

"Yes! I'll rather die than become your sex slave."

"Not sex slave, lover!"

"No!"

He freed up his second hand and grabbed a handful of her hair, trying to pull her away from him. Emilia bore the pain but refused to let go of him.

The vehicle veered off the road and crashed against the rails. Emilia clung to Matt the whole time while the van toppled off the road and rolled into the bush.

As the van began to flip across the dirt ground, Emilia was thrown out through the broken windshield and she landed beside a boulder, unconscious.

Meanwhile, Matt was still in the van which continued to roll away, smashing his head against the dashboard and breaking his skull. The vehicle eventually ended its journey beside a creek and was nothing more than a scrap of mangled metals and broken glass.
