My Husband -
Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Benjamin stood frozen in place, a statue of despair.
That day, he had bought a large bouquet of roses to celebrate Sylvia’s discharge from the hospital.
He never imagined that, separated by a mere wall, his wife was taking her final breath.
He crouched down and began to sob uncontrollably, like a lost child who has just realized his home is gone.
I watched his tears with a cold detachment, feeling nothing inside.

After what seemed like an eternity, Benjamin finally stumbled home in a daze.
Since my hospitalization, the front door of our house had remained unopened.
For the first time in ages, Benjamin returned to the house.
Ever since Sylvia’s hospitalization, he had practically moved to be with Sylvia and Ellie, leaving only me and Nora to fend for ourselves in this empty home.
Now, a thin layer of dust covered everything in the house.
Benjamin stood in the living room, disoriented and disheveled, taking a few tentative steps forward.

His eyes were drawn to a metal box by his feet.
Inside the box was an album, filled with memories of the past.
The album chronicled our life together, from the day Benjamin and I met, to Nora’s birth, and finally, to my time in the hospital.
The last photo was taken the day before I died, showing me and Nora lying quietly on the hospital bed.
The sunlight couldn’t reach where I lay, casting a bleak and somber tone over the scene.
My short life, captured within the thin pages of this album.

Benjamin clutched the album tightly, his eyes red with tears. After a long while, he collapsed to the floor, burying his face in his arms.
Benjamin couldn’t help but sob, “What have I done!”
Indeed, what have you done?
Isn’t it just giving my heart to your own moonlight!
Clearly, it was a small matter, why would it lead to such an irreparable outcome?
He couldn’t hear my accusations, nor see the disgust on my face.
Benjamin kept repeating my name, over and over. “Mirabelle, I know I was wrong. Please

come back.”
“I regret it so much. This heart should have been yours! I’ll get it back for you, okay?”
“Nora is still young… Are you really willing to let her grow up without a mother?”
The mention of Nora caused a sharp pang in my heart.
I didn’t want to leave her. Of course, I didn’t!
But if it weren’t for you, Benjamin, my Nora wouldn’t have to grow up motherless!
Thank goodness I have Sloane. I knew she would take good care of Nora.
