My Jealous Alpha Stepbrother -
Chapter 165
Michelle
Kit’s head is currently resting on my lap. He is sleeping on his stomach with his wings tucked neatly behind his back, but even though he is unconscious, there is a cat-like purring sound rumbling from his chest.
“Huh…” I smile to myself. “When you’re asleep, you’re actually not that scary.”
As I say those words, a portal opens in the forest clearing. The birds immediately stop to sing, and the air grows colder as a tall figure steps out of it. It’s a man, and he is wearing a suit and cufflinks. He is stunningly handsome, or… he would be if he weren’t scowling so hard at us.
Who is that?
I think I dropped my jaw on the ground, and the dark-haired man glances down at Kit, and then he proceeds to glare me straight in the eyes. His are a dangerous red.
“I don’t know how you managed to e*****e my son, but you won’t get away with it!”
Oh.
OH!
This man is Sky Howler. It’s Kit’s dad! And wait, what is he talking about? e*****e?
“She didn’t e*****e me, dad—I chose to form a contract with Michelle out of my own free will.”
Sky narrows his eyes. “Did she command you to say that?”
Kit sighs. “No…”
“Do you realize that not even your mother and I have a contract between us?”
Even though Sky’s voice is calm, I can tell he is seething inside. Also, I finally understand why I found him attractive: Kit and Sky are so damn similar it’s scary. Sky is just less of a teenager and has that refined beauty.
“A contract will make me stronger, and Michelle’s pack is dealing with zombie demons—she needs me.”
Anger ticks against Sky’s muscular neck. “Are you telling me that a simple mating ritual wasn’t enough?” Those red eyes move over to mine once more, causing shivers to race up my spine. “Ever since Kit found out you’re his mate, you’re all he has ever talked about, and if he isn’t good enough for you, then—”
“Dad… please don’t be like this,” Kit interrupts and stands up. He is taller than Sky, and I have a feeling it’s not only because Kit is in his demon form, but what do I know? Either way, Kit is now standing in a stance that seems intended to protect me.
“Be like what?!” Sky points at me. “She wants to save her pack, but what about what you want, huh? What if she uses this against you somehow? YOU HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING SHE SAYS WHEN THERE IS A CONTRACT!”
My heart races. Kit said that it was basically a slave contract, but I didn’t take him seriously. Does he truly have to follow my every order while there is a contract?
And f**k, I am selfish! The pack… the deaths… I just… I just got so desperate to fix everything that I didn’t consider Kit’s feelings.
“But Michelle wouldn’t order me around!” Kit argues, and that’s when I realize I have no clue how the contract even works between us. I’m so dumb.
“Wait… how does the contract work? Are Kit’s feelings and thoughts his own?” I ask in a low tone.
“Yes!” Kit exclaims and sighs. “Look, have you seen the Disney movie Aladdin?”
I nod.
“Great, then think of me as the Genie. I’m my own person, but if you wish for something, I have to do it.”
Sky doesn’t sound nearly as calm as his son. “The only difference is that Michelle has unlimited wishes, Kit! That contract is DANGEROUS!”
I stand up from the ground too. Both men absolutely dwarf me, and I feel a little bit silly, but I have to speak up. “Is there a way to break the contract off?”
A look of surprise flashes over Sky’s features. “Yes, there—”
“We won’t break the contract now,” Kit says and takes my smaller hands in his. He peers down at me, all determined and serious. “I will be your contracted demon until you have defeated those demons.”
Tears are prickling behind my eyelids. “But what about you? Will this hurt you somehow?” I inhale heavily. I feel broken on the inside and stupid for being so desperate for power. “We should break the contract, Kit. I’m selfish for—”
“No,” Kit interrupts and tilts up my chin with his finger. “You’re not selfish, and don’t you dare tell me otherwise. You did this for your pack members. That is the only thing on your mind and there are thousands of members in your pack whose lives you wish to save—you’re not selfish. And I’m a grownup: I can make my own decisions,” he looks up at his dad. “So please respect the way I’ve chosen to defeat these demons and never speak to my mate as if she is the villain here, because I wouldn’t hesitate to choose my mate over the family.”
Sky stares at his son and Kit continues. “Don’t look so shocked. You would do the same for mom and pick her in any scenario now that Kinsley and I are grownups.”
“Your mom is special, though,” Sky growls. “She is far more advanced than other mortals. I was lucky to have her picked as my mate because other humans suck.”
“Michelle is a werewolf.”
“Still a mortal,” cold eyes meet mine. “And I’m sorry, but I won’t accept Michelle as your mate before she has fully accepted you. If you’re not good enough for her to finish the mating ritual with, then—”
“THAT’S ENOUGH!” Kit is entirely red in the face now, but I get the feeling he is embarrassed and not angry. “We haven’t gotten there yet, okay?”
Sky lifts an eyebrow. “So I can assume it’s something that will happen soon? Has she taken you in demon form?”
“DAD!”
“Alright, alright… I won’t push it…” Sky sighs, and gives me one last narrowed look. “Take care of Kit. He is more sensitive than you might think.”
With that, Sky disappears into a portal. On the other side of it I can hear a woman saying, “Oh my god, I can’t believe you went and scared the kids! Bad demon!”
Kit gives me a sheepish smile. “That would be my mom… she is entirely human, but dad is so whipped by her that you could consider her one of the most powerful beings on the planet.”
I snort at that. The portal is closing and I look into Kit’s glowing eyes with a smile of my own. “Whipped, huh?”
He takes my hand, interlocking our fingers. “Yeah… I suppose it’s something that runs in the family. I’m whipped too,” his lips turn serious. “Are you going to break my heart, Michelle? Because you most definitely could. After all, it belongs to you already. Now and forever.”
