Michelle

I stare up at Kit, too terrified to struggle against his hand that is holding my fragile life in its grasp. His face is so close I can feel his breath on my skin, and I realize that one squeeze of his fist would be enough to snuff out my life in an instant. Fear and dread freeze me to the spot until I’m unable to move.

What am I supposed to do?

“Quiet today, are we?” Kit’s large eyes roam over my face as if searching for something, and I hold my breath, unsure of what to do.

My tongue feels too thick for my mouth, and it’s like I’ve lost the ability to speak.

I’m too afraid to answer him.

Kit must have noticed too, because he sighs.

“Aren’t you going to command me to stop bullying you?” He asks in a half-bored tone.

Right! I can do that! I can tell Kit to release me from his big, stupid hand, and then I will have him fight Jarq and his army and—

Wait.

My eyes narrow, and Kit’s lips twitch in response. He seems to be holding back a laugh. It’s obvious by how his yellow eyes are glittering with mirth, and I growl low in my throat.

“Kit…” I warn in a long drawl. “Are you messing with me right now?”

His lips form a sinister smile. “Figured that out, didn’t you?”

To my utter shock, he releases me on top of his sturdy, purple shoulder. The world spins around me for a fleeting second before I manage to crawl and grip hold of his neck. Holy s**t, I’m so far away from the ground! My eyes widen as my gaze takes in the sight of the vast mansion from my new height—Kit is enormous.

“We should be joining the fight,” Kit says without paying me much attention. His large, leather-clad wings spread behind us, and I shriek when we lift from the ground. I turn myself into a little ball and press myself further into his neck. It makes Kit briefly freeze before there is an amused huff of laughter. “What are you doing?”

It surprises me that there is a hint of affection in his voice. I didn’t expect that and feel my cheeks turn molten as I try to press myself further into him. “I’m trying to hide and pretend that we aren’t countless feet in the air.”

Kit snorts. “You remind me of my pet hamster. He would always replace my neck and get comfortable there.”

“I’m not a hamster…” I growl.

“No, but the similarities can’t be ignored.”

More irritation bubbles up within me before I realize that we are sort of bantering like usual. It doesn’t feel like much has changed except for the obvious, which would be that Kit is in his terrifying battle form.

I take a deep breath and try to ignore my racing heart. I can be brave. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but are you in full control of your actions right now?”

“Mhm… I’m not as powerful as I had hoped. It seems power has been replaced by control, but that’s okay. I am fully aware of who I am and what I came here to do.”

“Then why did you scare me like that?” I demand. “You picked me up, and I almost shat in my pants! I thought you were going to end me! Do you realize how scary you are in your battle form? You’re huge!”

“I’m sorry for being a d**k,” there is remorse in his voice. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I just wanted to test you and see if you would actually stop me if I did something reckless. You didn’t, which is sort of worrying.”

Shame washes over me. “I’m sorry too.”

“For what?”

“For forgetting that I’m your master and not doing anything.”

“Yeah, because even then, you could have used your ice magic against me. Or did you forget that you’re something of a mage as well?”

“Shut up…” my lips twitch, and I lightly punch his neck with my closed fist. I bet Kit can’t even feel it, yet he breathes an amused laugh.

“Shut up?” Kit teases. “Why should I shut up? I’m genuinely confused why you didn’t defend yourself, Michelle. That is an important question.”

“Kit…” I warn.

Despite my warning, he keeps teasing me. “I mean, do you have a death wish? Is that why you didn’t do anything?”

“No,” I snort in amusement, but when I think of an answer, I turn depressed as I’m hit with the bitter truth of my actions. “I let my fear get the best of me and forgot to act rationally. Silly, right? I guess I’m still not cured of my fear of demons, huh?”

Kit sighs, and I can feel his Adam’s apple bob. “I would never hurt you, Michelle. That much is clear to me now,” he moves his head and pokes me with his nose. I laugh when he inhales me, and his lips quirk into a smile. “Even in my battle form and have given in to my darkness and embraced my demonic energy, you’re still the single most important thing in my life. I couldn’t dream of harming you.”

My ears heat up to a billion degrees. I’m really bad at handling compliments and sweet words without getting embarrassed and replace myself pushing away Kit’s nose.

“Yeah, yeah, save the sweet talk for later, Romeo,” I say and peer down at the trees underneath us. My pack is fighting zombie deer, and I grit my teeth. “Right now, we should be focusing on defeating Jarq, the other necromancers, and all the zombie animals in their army.”

“Mhm,” Kit gasps. “Hey, isn’t that Jarq down there on that mountain?”

My eyes zero in on the necromancer who turned my sister into a member of his army, and just like Kit pointed out, he is standing on a mountain. My sister is with him, now a mindless slave and not her usual self.

Anger ticks against my jaw. Jarq stole Bella’s future, and I want nothing else than to destroy him. Now, I’ve been given that chance. Jarq’s friends are busy fighting the rest of my family and pack members, and he is all alone.

I focus on my ice powers and gather energy. “I want you to get close enough to Jarq so that I can destroy him. I don’t care how much magical power it’s going to take to defeat him—he is going to die by my hands!”

Two large yellow eyes peer down at me. “Do you have any idea how much I adore your obsession with revenge?” Kit asks, and I look at him with raised brows. “You have a very, very dark heart, Michelle. I love it so much…”

“Shut up, Kit…” I blush uncomfortably. “I’m just not a wishy-washy person. I can’t put up with injustice done to me or those I care about. That’s all there is to it.”

“Right,” Kit soars in the skies above Jarq. Countless undead demons are guarding him and hissing up at us, and Kit shivers in response. “So what is the plan?”

I stand up on his shoulder and press one hand to his neck for balance as I scan the ground. “How about you take care of the army of the undead, and I focus on murdering Jarq? If you get close enough to the ground, I can shape-shift.”

“And leave me?!”

“Uh, yes?” I lift my chin. “I’m an Alpha—I can handle myself. Leave the necromancer to me.”

“But you’re so small!” I can hear the concern in his voice and see the reluctance in his eyes. It’s a humorous sight to see a giant demon being worried about you. He looks dangerous, but in reality, he is a teddy bear. “I don’t think you should leave my side.”

“I’m not small—you’re the one who is huge, and you’re forgetting that I’m an insanely powerful mage. I have been practicing too.”

“Will you remember to use your magic this time, or are you going to let Jarq half-murder you before remembering that you can actually defend yourself?”

“Oh my god…” I roll my eyes at his antics. Kit grins at my obvious annoyance, and I shake my head. “You’re such an a*****e, you know that, right?”

“Yes,” his grin widens. “Do you want me to turn it down a notch?”

“I want you to be serious,” my voice hardens, and I see the humor in his yellow eyes fade. “I want to kill Jarq, and I’m only going to do that if you do your job of keeping his army of the undead busy.”

“Okay, okay,” he rolls his eyes. “I get it. I will leave the necromancer to you, okay? Just be careful. I can’t lose you…” Kit’s voice cracks ever so slightly, and I open my mouth to tell him to quit being silly, but I’m silenced by him nuzzling his huge nose against my entire body. “I won’t forgive you if you die on me. You’re my precious.”

I breathe a laugh at his Goblin voice and attempt to push his face away from me. He doesn’t budge. Instead, an amused smile lights up his face, and I’m forced to look away in order not to squeal at the cute expression he is making.

What is wrong with my brain for replaceing a huge, purple monster cute?

“Don’t overreact, Kit. You won’t lose me. Now hurry up and take care of Jarq’s army. I will be back shortly.”

“I will hold you to that,” he says with a serious look on his face before changing our direction and approaching the ground at top speed. “Get ready to jump.”

I don’t need to be told twice: when Kit is close enough, I leap into the air and shape shift. I feel my bones and muscles c***k and rearrange as fur pushes through my skin. It hurts a little, but its all worth it when I’ve changed into a gracious white wolf. I’m ready for battle and my eyes focus on Jarq.

He has spotted me too and has lifted his staff up over his head. Magic flares around him, and suddenly, dark clouds roll over us. Rain starts to fall, and thunder rumbles all around us.

“You will not defeat us so easily!” Jarq says. “This territory will soon belong to the necromancers! You’re too late, and way too weak to fight me!”

I tap into my telepathic powers to channel a message to the necromancers across the field. ‘Oh, come on, Jarq. I’m not interested in fighting with you. You know exactly why I’m here. I’m here to kill you.’

Jarq stares at me, and I snarl through my wolfish fangs and look around us. Jarq is standing on a huge rock and has surrounded himself with necromancers who are fighting against my pack members.

I see my mother in her lycan form fighting against a female necromancer. My dad is helping Kit with the army of the undead by freezing them. Sky is snapping the neck of a demon stag with his arrow-shaped tail further down the hill, and my heart tightens in my chest.

Everyone is here to support me, and it’s time that I play my part by defeating Jarq.

He will pay for taking my sister away from me.
