Chapter 13 Ava

It was almost 7 p.m. when I stopped outside Liam's house.

Leaving this morning was hard and I'd looked forward to coming back all day. Linea teased me mercilessly until I told her the truth.

Great sex wasn't what had me excited to see him again, though. It was more than just sex now. I enjoyed his company. It was about him.

I took a deep breath and wiped my forehead. I'd rushed through preparing a meal for the couple with triplets and had made myself a bit winded.

Even through their front door, I could hear three high-pitched cries. The mom's baggy eyes and tired smile greeted me as she collected the meal. As the new dad appeared next to her, I saw his eyes were lined with dark circles, too. "Are you guys okay?" I asked. Damn, they looked so...exhausted. "We'll survive," the mom said.

"Thank you, Ava." The dad nodded his head slightly before pulling his wife back inside.

I stood and stared at their front door, listening to the babies' cries.

Is this what my life would become?

Now in the car outside Liam's, I covered my stomach with a hand. "Don't be a fussy baby, please."

Or fussy babies?

No way. I was only having one child.

One child is a lot.

Liam's voice echoed in my head. I sighed heavily.

I needed to tell the man at some point. Let him know that our child-please, let it only be one-would be born soon.

Not too soon. It was likely at least eight months away. I looked at my dashboard. Two minutes to seven.

Why was I out here stalling? I'd looked forward to seeing Liam all day.

Now, a shaky feeling pooled in my belly.

Like a teenage girl having her first crush.

My face flushed and I pushed myself out of the car, shut the door, and locked it.

I wasn't crushing on Liam. I was getting to know him for the sake of our child.

Refusing to think more about that, I climbed up the steps and knocked. A few seconds passed before the door opened.

I gulped back the sigh that rose in my chest. Liam was dressed in a blue button-down shirt that molded to his frame. It flowed into dark blue dress pants and black dress shoes.

My eyes flicked back to his face, making a quick note of the buttons opened at his throat.

That shaky feeling turned into full-on butterflies.

I said the first thing that came to mind. "Are we going out?"

Please don't say yes.

Compared to his business apparel, I'd thrown on a pair of jeans and a casual top, along with boots.

"No, we're staying in." His lip quirked up. "Please, come in."

I couldn't help my smile. I walked past him into his beautiful home and waited as he shut the door.

His hand rested on the small of my back, steering me. "How was your day?"

Shivers edged down my spine. A voice as silky and deep as his should be criminal.

I blinked a few times to clear my head. He'd asked me a question.

"Um, it was great. Linea and I cleaned three houses. They were all polished and tidy when we were done."

"That's lovely."

I looked up and our eyes met. His carried an intensity that told me he meant every word spoken.

I swallowed. So what if my job wasn't glamorous? We didn't save lives, but what we did made a difference.

But I wasn't about to bring all that up. "How was yours?"

"I saw quite a few patients. Some grumpy, some excitable. It was all good."

I wanted to say more, but we had made it to the dining room and I lost my voice.

The heavy curtains on the north wall were pushed aside and revealed floor to ceiling windows.

The evening sky was stark and beautiful. I felt like I was under the stars right now.

"I noticed you liked sitting outside last night." Liam's voice was tight. "This is the closest we can have without the chill."

My heart squeezed. I turned to him and an unsure look crossed his eyes.

Was he worried that I didn't like it?

I smiled. "It's lovely."

Leaving his side, I crossed the room, closer to the window, and soaked it in. "Beautiful."

After a few moments, I turned.

For the first time, my eyes took in the room.

The dining table was covered in silver-plated dishes. Candles burned on different surfaces in the room, lending the space a warm feel. "Liam, this is..." My eyes met his. "Wow."

"It's just dinner." He waved me over. "Come on."

I rounded the table big enough to seat six people comfortably to the spot where he stood. He pulled out the chair so I could sit.

Then he took the one opposite me.

My eyes ran over the dishes. "Did you make all of these?" He nodded.

My face heated. Okay.

Suddenly shy, I turned away, pushing my hair behind my ear. He'd done all this for me?

I wasn't used to men going to so much trouble for me. Certainly not the guys I'd dated in the past.

Liam may be older than me, but he had...everything going for him. He was an amazing lover, cleaned, cooked, and set a table like a five-star restaurant! "This is for you."

I turned and smiled, collecting the single red rose. Its smell tickled my nose. "Thank you."

He smiled back. "Shall we eat?"

It took a few minutes to decide what I wanted to try first. But once I tasted the beef stew, I wanted a bite of everything he'd cooked.

"How did you learn to cook so well if you never had much time?"

"It was one thing I did with my parents. Making dinner. It was a whole affair."

I bit my lip. What if Liam and I could have that with our child? Little moments to bond as a family.

"Wine?" He lifted a bottle over the glass next to my plate. "Sure." The word came out before I considered it.

I couldn't have wine. It was alcohol and that was bad for the baby.

Dr. Morris said I could have a drink here and there, but how much was that? I didn't want to take a chance with my baby's health.

But my glass was already filled with red wine. I just wouldn't drink it.

Liam picked up his glass by the stem. "To a lovely dinner with a beautiful woman."

My heart melted.

"Let's have a toast, Ava." Oh, yeah.

I grabbed my wine and raised the glass. "To a lovely dinner with a beautiful man.'

"How did I know you'd say that?" His eyes crinkled with laughter.

We clinked glasses and I placed the cool rim on my lips. He was looking at me, so I tipped it.

I tried not to cringe and placed the glass on the table. That was a tiny sip.

No more now.

Liam's gray eyes followed every single thing I did, including my wine aversion. "You don't like it?"

He'd almost finished his first glass, and I'd barely drunk from mine. "No, it's great. I'm just not much of a wine drinker." "Oh." Liam's brows lifted.

I inwardly winced. I loved wine, just not right now. "Yeah." "But you like beer, right? I'll get you a beer."

"No!" I protested a little too loud.

I held onto his arm to keep him from standing. "No?"

"No. I don't want you to leave." True enough. His eyes looked doubtful.

Think, Ava.

"I want to hear the pinky promise story."

The wary look in his eyes turned to a smile and his body relaxed. Only then did I pull my hand back.

"My first patient after I finished medical school was a little girl. She had a broken pinky finger. It got smashed in a window."

"Sounds horrible."

"It was." His brows knotted, like he could still picture it. "She kept saying she won't be able to make promises and keep them anymore since she couldn't use her pinky." "Aww..." A sad laugh left my lips. "What about her other pinky?" "It had to be the right one."

"Well, did it ever get better?"

He nodded. "In a few weeks she was alright. Since then-" his eyes met mine "-my pinky promises are my most serious promises."

"That's sweet."

He smiled ruefully.

We returned to the meal, and I prayed he'd forgotten about the beer.

When our plates were clear of dessert, I hopped to my feet, relieved. "I'll help you clean this up."

When he was done, he took my hand. My eyes narrowed, but I followed his lead.

He took us upstairs, past all the empty rooms, to his bedroom. Seeing the space where we'd made love last night had my body on fire.

But Liam didn't stop by the bed. He walked straight through to the bathroom. It was pristine, unsurprisingly, and had a giant tub.

"You must be tired." He stopped by the door, taking in my face. His hands didn't caress my skin, but I felt him everywhere.

"I'll run us a bath. You must be sore after the long day you've had. Take off your clothes."

My breath caught in my throat. I moved into the bedroom to do as he asked.

My hands shook with every button I unfastened.

The light from the bathroom spilled out, and I looked up. Liam was undoing his cuffs and buttons, but his eyes were on me.

We watched each other get undressed. And with every inch of his skin that was revealed, my center grew a little wetter.

I was ready to put a fingertip there to ease the ache, but he reached for my hand.

In the steaming bathroom, he helped me into the tub, and a gasp left me.

It was hot; almost too hot.

I leaned against the side, my muscles relaxing in the heated bath. It felt so good.

Liam got in the other end, and I glimpsed his hard length before he sank under the water. His arms rested on both sides of the tub, his chest wide and strong.

My pulse quaked. In my neck, my tummy, my center.

The water felt good, maybe a little too hot due to my pregnancy hormones. What I really wanted, though, was to be in Liam's arms.

He leaned his head back and closed his eyes, exposing his glorious muscles. His Adam's apple bobbed, and the sudden need to lick his neck clutched my insides. Before I could talk myself out of it, I moved toward him.

My thighs brushed his, and his eyes opened, head tilting up to look at me.

Biting my lip, I crawled onto his lap.

A moan fell from my lips as my center grazed his shaft. I bobbed in the water, rubbing my folds against the underside.

Liam groaned and wrapped his arms around me, flattening my body against his chest. I licked his throat, tasting a hint of floral bath wash and a unique taste that was all his.

I kissed his smooth jawline all the way to his ear. His mouth claimed mine then, a sharp exhale leaving him.

Firm hands wrapped up in my damp hair, his tongue replaceing mine. I held onto his shoulders, giving myself over to his kisses, his touch, his everything.

Nothing had ever felt this good.

His hands moved down to my hips, helping me to rub against him better.

A whimper left my throat. I was so close. I moved faster, reaching for that elusive high.

Water sloshed over the tub's edges, and our quick pants filled the space. "Liam," I whispered into his mouth.

He kissed me fervently, rubbing the head of his cock through my folds. "What do you need, Ava?"

"I want-" gasp"-more."

He squeezed my ass, teasing me one last time before withdrawing. "Why did you stop?" I complained.

"Hey, hey," Liam brushed my hair away and cupped my face, then kissed

my lips. "Let's go to bed, okay?"

A thrill ran through me. "Okay."
