Chapter 1

My five-year-old son, Alex Jones, was diagnosed with leukemia.

Despite this, my doctor husband, Rick Jones, was fixated on Jenny Lane’s daughter,

Mia Lane.

Just when we found a suitable bone marrow match, Rick allocated the life-saving slot to Jenny’s daughter.

“Lisa, you’re already pregnant. Alex can wait for umbilical cord blood to save him,” Rick said.

On the day my son left me, the rain poured heavily, his weak form nestled in my

arms.

“Mom, I want to see Dad again,” Alex whispered.

“Alex, when you’re discharged, I’ll take you to the amusement park, okay?”

I gently touched Alex’s swollen hand, his eyes filled with stars.

Alex’s lit up with anticipation as he looked up at me.

“Really? Will dad go with us?”

My heart s k p p e d a beat. It had been five days since I last saw Rick.

Even on the day of Alex’s bone marrow transplant surgery, he was nowhere to be found.

Rick was the top hematologist in Aromac City.

I had hoped his expertise would save Alex when Alex was diagnosed, but I was wrong. In Rick’s heart, there was Jenny, a woman who had just divorced and whose daughter was also ill.

The moment Jenny’s fragile figure appeared before Rick, his balance shifted.

Apart from consultations and surgeries, Rick spent most of his time with Jenny and her daughter.

My dissatisfaction and Alex’s yearning for his father were dismissed by Rick as unreasonable and irrational.

He said, “Jenny is a woman going through a tough time after a divorce, and now her child is sick. Can’t you be more understanding?

“Why do you always compare the children? Yes, Alex is my child, but isn’t Mia also. suffering without a father and battling leukemia?

“If there were something between Jenny and me, would I still marry you? Would you still give birth to Alex?”

Rick’s impatience resonated vividly in my memory.

Alex gently shook my hand, bringing me back from my thoughts.

“Mom, I know Dad is busy. He’ll come see me when I’m better, right?”

I hugged his small body, nodding in reassurance, but an inexplicable anxiety lingered within me.

It was already 1 PM, half an hour past the scheduled surgery time.

After comforting Alex, I headed towards the nurses’ station.

At the sight of me, those nurses all gave me an awkward smile and avoided eye

contact.

“Alex’s mom.”

I asked anxiously, “Wasn’t Alex scheduled for surgery today?

“Why hasn’t anyone come to notify us yet?”

The nurse looked at me with some surprise.

“Alex’s surgery was canceled. Didn’t you know?”

The nurse’s words hit me hard.

“Canceled? But we found a suitable bone marrow donor. Why the sudden change?” I questioned, struggling to comprehend.

“Dr. Jones canceled it. The donor matched a girl in Room 5, so…”

The nurse gave me a sympathetic gaze with no further explanation.

Stunned, I managed to gather my thoughts.

“Where is Rick?” I demanded.

“He’s in surgery.”

Ignoring her warning, fueled by anger, I rushed towards the operating room.

I thought, “I pulled strings and searched through all bone marrow registries to secure this opportunity. Why should Rick give it to Jenny?”

“Alex’s mom, it’s too late. The surgery has been ongoing for four hours.”

The nurse’s desperate cries fell on deaf ears as I continued towards the closed doors of the operating room.

The red light above the door felt glaring.

Jenny sat with her head bowed outside the operating room. When she saw me, she hurriedly stood up on the side.

“Rick, come out here!

o someone

“Rick, how dare you… how dare you give Alex’s surgery spot else?”

I pounded on the operating room door like a madwoman.

“Lisa, why are you here?”

Jenny stood by nervously, seemingly shocked by my appearance.

I grabbed her by her clothes and slapped her pale face.

Jenny covered her face, her expression one of disbelief.

“Why are you so fond of grabbing things from others? Isn’t stealing my husband enough for you? Now you want to s n a t c h the life-saving spot for my son?”
