Roma’s POV

“Well, you look like s**t. Respectfully.” Raphael said when he entered my office and took one look at me as I sat with my hands on the table behind my desk.

His eyes held sympathy that would have made me roll my eyes and throw jabs at him if I wasn’t so tired.

It was one of the after effects of shifting into the Beast. I knew how I looked in front of the mirror.

Eyes that looked like they hadn’t slept all night, bones that ached from the painful turn and a voracious hunger that made me feel like I had not eaten in days.

I had woken up sometime around three in the morning, no longer in fore and hind limbs and the chains were intact which was a wonderful thing. I’d learned the hard way over the years on what could contain the Beast and knew that it was not pleased to have been caged in my bedroom last night rather than outside, reveling in the taste of b***d and causing c*****e.

Well, the Beast and the goddess could suck it. My body, my rules.

Groaning as I tried to stand and get a bottle of water from the fridge, I raised an eyebrow at Raphael who was still standing at the door watching me and gestured towards the fridge.

“Instead of staring at me, you could help me grab a bottle of water from the fridge.” I said with a straight face and he grinned and walked towards the fridge, throwing a bottle of water at me.

I cracked my knuckles, knowing that in a couple of hours, I would feel like me again and emptied the bottle of water in a few gulps.

“I’m here to give you the monthly report as always.”

“That’ll have to wait until my food gets here.”

“How many times have you eaten since you woke up?”

“Two?” I didn’t remember.

I’d spent the entire morning, rearranging the West wing that I had trashed in the night, not wanting anyone to enter. I hadn’t let anyone into my bedroom since the incident with Aria.

I didn’t know if I wanted a repeat of such an incident and didn’t trust myself to be able to stop the beast if another situation like that arose.

Which brought me back to Aria.

Why had the beast stopped that night?

Was it because it recognized the mating bond even thought it was not yet even in place?

That was impossible.

“Well, I’m sure a lot of food goes into making sure you look like that.” Raphael said and I nodded absentmindedly, resisting the urge to throw a jab at him since of the two of us, he was the one who ate like he would not live to see the next day.

The door opened and Salem, holding a tray of what I suspected was my food, smiled at me, her teeth biting into her bottom l*p in a move that was purely sensual.

“Hello, Raphael.” She said with a bright grin and Raphael nodded, his eyes wide as he looked at me with eyebrows raised in question.

I shrugged, confused as well as to why Salem was the one bringing me food from the kitchen.

The only difference between Raphael and I was that my best friend would never let the question on the tip of his tongue go without asking. Me? I didn’t care if it was the goddess herself who brought the food to me as long as I was able to eat.

“So, tell me, Salem. Were you on kitchen duty?”

Dropping the food on the table and giving me a smile that I was sure would pull down even the strongest men, she finally looked at Raphael.

“One of the maids, the human girl was on her way here with the food and when I saw her in the hallway, I offered to help her bring it here. I wanted to use the opportunity to check on the Alpha and ask some questions.”

My mind had stopped at the human girl.

Had she been released from the infirmary already?

And she was already back to work?

I was suddenly annoyed that Salem had brought the food instead. It would have given me an opportunity to see Aria Ajello without having to think of a reason why I was checking up on her.

If Scian could already notice how I could not seem to stay away from Aria, it was only a matter of time before the rest of the pack began to suspect that I was giving her special treatment and want to replace out why.

It didn’t stop me from wanting to see her bright brown eyes lighten up at the sight of me like I was her saviour anytime she looked at me.

“Thank you for bringing the tray, Salem. You may discuss whatever you want to right now if it is so urgent or come back later.” I answered, already opening the tray to eat.

Salem frowned, obviously not expecting the lack of interest in her but nodded and inclined her head.

Salem frowned, obviously not expecting the lack of interest in her but nodded and inclined her head.

“Then I shall return later.” She grinned at Raphael. “See you around, Raphael.” And then she swayed her h**s, a move that was very intentional before she closed the door after her.

I was already halfway through the food when Raphael cleared his throat and when I looked up, he pointed towards the door.

“Don’t tell me you’re still tapping that?”

“Tapping what?” I asked as I swallowed, even though I knew what he was referring to.

“Salem is the last woman you should want in your bed.”

“I know. And that’s why I’m letting her in my bed.”

It was a better option that actually letting someone I wanted to my bed. Someone with light brown eyes and freckles that dusted her nose and underneath her eyes. Someone that was too bright for this dull world.

It was safer to.

“There are rumours that she is hooking up with Carlos, Roma.” Raphael added with a look of concern and I nodded even though I couldn’t care less what Salem did when she was not sucking my c**k.

“I hear you. I’ll desist from playing with fire.” Not that I cared what Carlos was doing with Salem. He hated me already so having another reason to didn’t really bother me.

“Now, the reports” I said when I was done with my meal and just then, Raphael’s phone vibrated with a message.

Raphael’s face changed, his eyes hardening as he read the message and rose to his feet.

I didn’t like that look.

“What is it?” I asked and his entire body shook.

“Carmen and her twins were killed in the woods on their way back from town. It was a werewolf hunter.”

The glass tumbler in my hand shattered and my b***d ran cold, the ringing in my ears increasing as I rose to my feet.

“Tell me they caught the killer.” My voice was cold and when Raphael nodded, I smiled.

It was a vengeful grin. Because the hunter was going to meet Roma Ruggiero and he would wish for death and it would not come.
