Aria’s POV

On the list of stupid things that I had ever done, running away in the middle of the night with no map and no idea what to do was probably the highest on that list.

Who was I kidding when I ran away from the mansion? How the hell was I ever going to escape when I had gone and gotten lost in the forest?

My heart was beating wildly in my chest the more I walked in the woods alone and I fought the urge to cry and run.

I could do this. I was a big girl. I could not for anything or any reason return back to the mansion after what I had seen.

Roma Ruggiero was more dangerous to me than a bunch of trees in any form. I could not get over that look in his eyes as he held the heart of an innocent man in his palm. The cold calmness that I had seen in him.

Shaking my head, I decided to focus on getting out of the woods alive.

I spoke too soon because I tripped over a root and fell on my face to the sand.

My eyes watered again as I pointed my torchlight in front of me, already having second thoughts about running away.

Should I have just wanted for morning to flee the mansion?

Another thought reminded me that I might not have lived to see tomorrow if I had waited for Roma to replace me after what I had seen.

It was my fault for barging into the West wing. If I hadn’t then perhaps I would still continue to view Roma as a hero. As an icon.

But the dark room had shown me just what Roma was capable of.

He and his friends were all werewolves and they would support him no matter what.

Dusting my clothes that were filled with sand, I let out a shaky breath and was about to continue on my journey when I heard a howl.

My heart stopped and when I looked around, they began to emerge from the shadows, one after the other. So many of them.

They looked like humans but they were definitely not. Their bodies were twisted in such a way that it should be even impossible to stand and yet they took their steps towards me, eyes grinning and lighting as they sniffed the air and released a laugh.

I started to take a step back, terrified that this was how my journey was going to end.

I had memorized all of the werewolf hierarchy and knew without a doubt that these were feral wolves. And they looked like they had only one purpose in mind as they advanced towards me.

My death. My flesh.

Sophia had warned me about them and even though Roma had said werewolves didn’t naturally eat humans by choice, feral wolves were the exemption.

The tears started to run down my cheeks and I shook as I backed up into a tree.

As if the situation could not get any worse, rain started to drizzle.

“Somebody help me. Please.” I whimpered as one of the wolves finally closed the distance between us to touch my face.

That was all I needed to snap and I started running, screaming as I ran, the sound of the wolves chasing me excitedly filling my ears.

I didn’t want to die like this.

I had not even finished music school. I had not lived the life that I wanted. I had not done anything for myself or even made a name for myself. And this was how I was going to die?

The rain started to fall earnestly, the downpour so heavy, I could barely see as I ran.

I had thought I was ahead until I was flung against a tree by one of the wolves who had caught up to me.

Screaming as I heard my bones crack from the impact of the hit, I began to crawl away, kicking at the wolf that tried to pull me back and screaming with all of my might.

I didn’t want to die. I looked back to the thousands of times that I had been beaten up by my father and wondered if I would ever truly be able to tell him that he was forgiven if I got the chance to.

If there was any higher power and they could hear me, I needed them to save me.

“I don’t want to die.” I screamed through my tears as the wolf dragged me into their middle and the trio howled excitedly, looking at me with nothing but malicious intent.

I could smell the b***d from where my head had torn when I was thrown and the big scratch on my leg where the feral wolf had tried to hold onto me.

I would not be surprised to replace out that there was a possibility of internal bleeding if I ever managed to survive this.

The wolves had just reached for me when a howl that shook the forest sounded and that howl alone was enough to make the feral wolves distracted from me.

Sneaking away towards a tree, as far as my body could move with all of the injuries, it didn’t matter because just as I was pulled back, a shadow ran past us and picked up one of the hunters.

Screaming in fear, I watched with horror as the creature that emerged from the shadows after tearing two of the wolves to pieces and dropping their remains.

The wolf was bigger than any creature I had ever seen in my life. Maybe it was because I was losing b***d from the gash in my stomach where the female feral had torn into with her claws.

The wolf had fur that was as dark as ebony all around and the beast had eyes that I would remember even in my sleep because I had dreamt of this creature almost all the time.

The air brushed through his fur, black as the night without moonlight, his ears pulled forward and lips tucked up. Four black paws stood firm to the earth’s soil and when he rose to his full height on all fours, he was taller than me by inches.

A black wolf with bright red eyes. It felt

like Dejavu. Like the wolf was familiar but at the same time, it felt so different from anything I had ever known.”

Watching with blurry vision, I laid on the floor in terror as the black wolf tore the third feral who had tried to run away to pieces, b***d covering its teeth, claws and snout.

And then everywhere was quiet again and it was me and the werewolf. The scary werewolf, almost the height of a horse started to advance towards me, it’s growl menacing and filled with nothing that hinted it might recognize me.

Was the wolf coming to eat me?

“Please, don’t hurt me” I whispered as I laid on the grass, the beast taking threatening steps towards me and when it finally arrived in front of me, I was minutes away from being unconscious.

The last thing I remembered as I blacked out was the bright red eyes of the monster wolf.
