Roma’s POV

The last thing I had needed to hear was exactly what Raphael was telling me again as I rushed out of the infirmary and headed for the room where the lover of the injured wolf was currently being kept.

I was angry but not at him, because all the high ranking wolves and even the sentinels always knew when some of the maids snuck out to party.

The girls did not know this, but a male was sent after them to keep watch and ensure that they did not get themselves into too much trouble. This was after it was revealed that they only snuck out to party and not for some dangerous or threatening scheme, for which it meant I would have no choice but to prohibit them from attending.

That was the only reason why I had not stormed out of the room and headed straight into the town to bring them back especially with the fact that there were werewolf hunters on the loose and now more than ever had suddenly decided to hurt us without caring about the consequences even though we had tried to stay as far away from the humans as possible.

As I knocked on the door to the room and waited for a response, Raphael stood beside me.

“Your claws are out, Roma.” He whispered beside me.

Looking down at my hands, I took in a deep breath and quickly retracted my claws. I was sure that the woman behind the door was already terrified form whatever she had experienced in the woods and the last thing she needed was an Alpha with his claws out, asking her a variety of questions.

Raphael opened the door when he saw that I had calmed down and I walked in first.

I knew her, the same way I made it a duty to know and remember every member of my pack.

Her name was Carly and she was one of the more delicate wolves.

Still dressed in a floral dress that was stained with her partner’s b***d, she rushed to kneel on the floor in front of me, her eyes brimming with tears.

“Please, Alpha. Thank God you’re here. They won’t let me see him. They won’t let me be there with him. I just need to be sure that he is alright.” Her voice shook as she sobbed and it tugged at the battered pieces of my black heart.

Her partner, Drey had taken silver tipped arrows to his torso and from how Scian’s face had looked once she came out of the room where he was receiving emergency treatment, it was not looking good at all.

Refraining from telling Carly anything when nothing was certain, I helped her to her feet and towards the bed to sit.

“Scian and the others will do everything possible to try to save him. Do you understand me?” I said, my voice calm but firm and she nodded quickly.

“Now, you need to relax because I need you to help us figure out who hurt your mate. Can you do that for us, Carly?”

She nodded again and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath and shuddered.

“They didn’t come close so we could not see them but Drey sensed that something was wrong but it was too late. They had fired arrows in our direction. He shielded me with his body and I couldn’t just leave him there and go after them but there were two distinct scents. Definitely male. That’s what I remember, Alpha.”

Tears tolled down her cheeks again and this time, I reached into my pockets and offered her a handkerchief, pulling her in for a hug and allowing her to cry freely.

Werewolves were tactile creatures and even more so, those that were in pain.

Leaving her with a promise that she would be allowed to see Drey as soon as possible and asking Raphael to ensure that she bathed and had a change of clothes, I stopped outside and looked at my Beta.

“Where is Carlos?” Knowing him, he would have already appeared before me to gloat about how all this was my fault for not listening to him and declaring war against the humans of Shadow Plain. But now when he was needed the most, to help track these humans, he was nowhere to be found.

“Alright, have the men comb the entire forest tonight. I want any traces found and brought back to me.”

Raphael was about to say something when he received a message on his phone and his expression changed as he looked up at me.

“What is it?” I asked.

I just received a message from one of our sentinels, Nathan who was sent to follow the girls tonight and everything seems to be alright. Except for the fact that the girls, save one of them who he thinks is the designated driver are drunk. He adds as f**k to emphasize his point.” Raphael read very slowly, each sentence sounding much worse than the last.

I froze, trying my possible best to reign in my annoyance and immense worry.

“I’m sure they’re fine, but we both know that Ajello is accident prone…” Raphael trailed off and that was the conviction I needed to head out of the house and to my car.

“I will keep you updated ” He said with a smirk as I climbed into the car and for a moment, I was glad that he could replace it amusing, because only moments ago he looked ready to punch a hole into the wall in rage at what had been done to our people and I could not blame him.

It was taking everything in me to not shift and act on the part of me that wanted war and bloodshed.

I had very rarely thought about whether Carlos was right and if we needed to attack but then I remembered Aria. I wanted to believe that there were others like her. Kind humans who had no hand in any of these attacks. All of which we would be sentencing to death if I went ahead to declare a m******e.

I could not in good conscience allow such a tragedy to occur, which was why this issue needed to be addressed with the werewolf hunters as soon as possible. A warning needed to be sent to them.

Parking in front of the club according to the directions that Raphael had sent to me, I wasted no time heading in and scanning the crowd.

My eyes met with Nathan first where he sat perched on a stool, his eyes facing one direction and when I looked to where he was staring at, I saw two of the maids dancing besides their seat, one looking very much sober.

Heading to where Nathan sat, I gestured towards the girls and the door and he got my message, rising to his feet.

“What about the others?” I asked him and turned around when he pointed diagonally.

I saw Aria’s blonde friend, Sophia, first, dancing with a guy, who smelled completely human and looked like he was having the time of his life.

And then I finally picked up Aria’s scent in the sea of people and when my eyes landed on her, I froze.
