Aria’s POV

“I need you to do a couple of things for me.”

That was how I found myself in Salem’s room several minutes later standing awkwardly by the door as she watched me with interest as she sat on her bed.

“So tell me everything there is to know about you, human.”

My eyes widened in surprise and I wondered why she was asking me this question.

“I don’t understand.”

“Why? Are human brains denser than ours?” She asked, looking genuinely curious that it made me offended but I didn’t dare say anything, especially because I was not stupid enough to forget that even though Salem looked pretty much like she needed saving, she was a strong wolf.

I had only seen her claws once but as she looked at them again, I swallowed in fear.

“My name is Aria Ajello.” I started, my voice shaking but she grinned, her smile full of fang as she waited for me to continue and I swallowed nervously.

“I’m twenty two years old and I was an undergraduate of music up until I became a servant here to pay my father’s debt. I can draw and I can…”

“That’s enough. I’ve heard all that there is to know. You lead a pretty boring life. But I’m sure that your time here has been eventful. You don’t look so scared of us either.”

She stood and took slow, intimidating steps towards me and I didn’t know that I had taken steps back until my back was resting against the wall.

Her smile would have been disarming if I was not already frightened of her.

She removed her dress and walked back to her bed naked after she whispered in my ear.

“So, have any one amongst us that you like yet?” She asked with a smirk and I froze at her question.

I looked away from her beautiful body, my face red with embarrassment and I heard her laugh.

“Oh, come on, we are both women, unless you swing this way?”

When I shook my head, she laughed and fell on the bed, comfortable in her own skin and crossed her leg.

“So, what is your type of man? Nice, friendly and cute looking like Scott, the kid that works with Scian, tall, bright and handsome like Raphael or….”

She trailed off and I waited for her to finish. She mistook my lack of answer for being recalcitrant

“So it’s neither of them, is it? Tell me then, do you like Tall, dark and intense men like Roma Ruggiero?”

I froze, my eyes widening in shock and I immediately shook my head but she laughed.

“Your heart is beating faster right now, do you know that? It didn’t change one bit when I mentioned the first two. You little minx. Setting your eyes on the highest on the food chain, is that it?”

I shook my head again, afraid that I would say nonsense if I attempted to speak.

“Open your mouth and speak, little girl.” She growled and I shook.

“There is nothing between the Alpha and me. You don’t have to worry about anything like that.”

Walking up to me nude, she grabbed my chin and raised her brows.

“But you want there to be something, don’t you? And who told you that I was worried? I’m not worried about anything. Do you know why? Because Roma doesn’t care for the likes of you. Or me or anyone besides his mate that is six deep under. Did you know that he was mated?”

I tried to nod, but her grip on my face tightened and I was forced to speak.

“Yes, I know.”

“Do you know her name? It was Selene. Named after the moon. As if the goddess had created her to just be Luna. And you know what, she was perfect and you know what she was not? She was not human. So, get those foolish thoughts and desires out of your head before they get you killed. And consider this a favour. I’m saving you from the heartbreak that I received.”

Her eyes welled with angry tears as she released me and walked towards her wardrobe

Wearing a robe, she turned around to look at me and wiped at her wet eyes.

Why was she crying? I thought that things were good between her and Roma?

But this mention of heartbreak… Did it mean that Roma had broken her heart?

She didn’t look like she would be too happy to answer if I asked her so I waited in silence, hoping she was done with me.

My stomach had plummeted at the mention of Roma’s mate because this was the first time that I was hearing her name.

I had avoided any and all talk about her, choosing ignorance but with the defeated look on Salem’s face, it was obvious that she truly believed everything that she had told me.

And my heart sank all over again.

Why did I keep hoping when everything was right in front of me?

Scribbling something on a piece of paper, she walked up to me and forced it in my hand.

“I need you to replace those herbs and bring back to me before dawn tomorrow.”

My eyes widened because the sun had already set.

Was she asking me to go out this night and get herbs?

“I don’t know my way around the forest and…”

Her fangs came out as she smiled and I froze in horror.

“Are you trying to say that you cannot go on the errand that I have sent you, little human? Do you really want to know what happens when someone like you defies someone like me?”

“No, I want to.” I stammered, shaking my head immediately.

“But I don’t know my way around the woods. Can I take someone with me?”

“So not only are you reluctant to go but you would like to shift your assignment to someone else? How nice. And lazy.”

She grabbed my neck and slammed me against the door and I would have screamed if she hadn’t placed a hand in front of her mouth to warn me not to make a sound.

“I’m sorry. Please don’t hurt me.” I begged, tears rolling down my cheek and she looked at me for a moment before she finally released me, dropping me to the ground like I didn’t weigh more than a piece of paper.

Removing her robe, she put on her dress again and turned around to face me.

“Because I’m so kind, I’m going to walk you to the woods and you’ll replace your way back. Is that understood?”

I nodded immediately. It wasn’t like I had any choice in the matter.

She grabbed my face again and placed a soft k**s on my lips.

“A pity that you and I have such poor taste in men. We would have become the best of friends, you see.”

I sent a message to Sophia as she led me out of the mansion into the woods and prayed that nothing bad was going to happen.

But I should have realized a long time ago that just because I prayed for something, it didn’t mean that I was going to get answers to them.
