Chapter 48
Beth’s POV
She stirred awake the next morning and found Asher lying next to her, a little frown cresting his face as he slept. Memories from last night start to flood her mind as lay trying to recall what happened.
She lifted her hand to placed gently against her growing bump with a deep sigh. Last night ache was the worst she had ever felt before. Everything felt as though her stomach wanted to tear open.
She shuttered slightly recalling the anguish she felt as she rolled into a seating position and made to stand up so she could empty her bladder when Asher shot upright and turned to face her.
“Are you okay?” he asked suddenly, his voice still raspy from sleep not to mention the wild mess seating on top his head.
“I’m fine. I just want to use the bathroom”
“Okay” He said and then struggled back on his feet before reaching back down to carry her.
She arched a brow at him, “What are you doing?”
“You said you wanted to use the bathroom right? So c’mon” He said once again and made to carry her but she inch away from him.
“Please stop. I can help myself to the bathroom”
Asher only scoffed at her before he quickly leaned over and scooped her into his arms despite her protest and began to match towards the bathroom. He pulled it open before placing her gently on the floor.
“Go ahead and pee, I will be right outside the door when you are done”
Once he was out, she quickly emptied her bladder but made no move to stand up. She simply sat still, her mind twirling with fresh thought, wondering exactly what had happened to her in the night.
She was still deep in her thought when she heard a knock on the door and assumed Asher was going to get it. She got up and shrugged her legging up her waist before pushing the door open just in time to see Eva walked in.
“Good morning, Asher, Elizabeth” She said with a smile, moving closer to stand beside her.
“Good morning, Eva” Beth said just as quietly, wrapping an arm around herself.
“How are you feeling today?”
“I feel fine. Thank you”
“Come over here and have a seat let me take a closer look at you” the older lady said and took her by the hand and began to lead her to seat on the sofa. Once she was seated, she took out her stethoscope and placed against her chest and gave a nod of approval before
feeling her pulse around the wrist and heaved another sigh of relief.
From the look of things, it was obvious she was in a good shape despite her ordeal last night.
“Everything okay, Doctor?”
“Yes. Everything is fine, Child” She confirmed and Beth out a breath.
“I was afraid something bad has happened after the pain I felt last night” She expressed quietly before glancing at Asher who was still silent by the corner.
“That’s perfectly normal I must say, Considering your position and everything. It’s normal to at experience such pain. But not to worry, I will give you some medication to help with it, okay?”
“Okay”
“So, will she keep experiencing this pain or it will stop eventually” Both head snapped at his direction. Seem they had forgotten he was even there to begin with.
“I’m afraid not. Like I said before, the baby is trying to adjust to the mother but once it’s done, she will stop experiencing this and enjoy what it means to be an expectant mother” Eva said with a reassuring smile at her.
Elizabeth managed a small smile despite her inner dread at the thought of experiencing yet another pain as she did last night. It’s hard not to be afraid but still it was best to be strong.
“Thank you Doc” Elizabeth smiled.
Eva nodded, pulling out a pen and a small jotter from her breast pocket. Asher watched as she scribbled something on it. While she did that, Asher stared at Elizabeth and she stared back at him with a neutral look on her face.
He had no way of knowing what she was thinking and he only hoped that she wasn’t plotting his death with that look in her eyes.
She looked away before clasping her hands together on her lap. Eva, not knowing the tension between both couples continued scribbling some more words on the jotter. Asher sighed, going over to sit at the edge of the bed.
“Okay, all done.’’ Eva declared, looking up to replace Asher now sitting against the bed before moving towards him. “Here you go”
She handed Asher a list of things he could do to make Elizabeth comfortable. Asher glanced at it momentarily before raising a brow at her.
“What is this?”
“Nothing extreme. Just list of activities you can do to help her grow and relax into her changing body as well”
Asher was lost for words for a moment as he stared at the list of things in his hands once again. Beth could tell he was certainly not happy about it but was surprised when he didn’t protest either.
“Okay, I’ll do as you say” Asher said, waving the paper in hand with clenched jaw.
“Good. If there’s anything i can do to help in one way or the other, don’t forget to come to me”
Asher nodded as he watched her leave. When she was out of sight, Asher took a moment before he turned and placed the piece of paper in hand against the table before slipping into the bathroom to get ready for the day.
Another minute or two went by with Beth just waiting for Asher to finish using the bathroom when a thought fluttered through her mind and decided to look through the list Eva had left behind
For a moment, she found everything she had listed to be plain ridiculous and stupid. The Asher she has come to know would never massage her food or take a walk with her through the garden or give her back rub unless she was dying or maybe, just maybe he would coming from anyone that wasn’t her.
Haah!_. For everything Asher had done, Beth saw a mean through Eva suggestions to add a few of her own as punishment for all the emotional stress he had put her through all these weeks.
The more she thought about more things to add, the more the plan sounded appealing to her. Asher deserved to feel a little of the pain he made her pass through and she was ready to put it into action.
Once she was done. She tucked the pen away and placed it right back on the bed where he had left them.
“What’s that smile on your face?” Asher voiced had startled her, as he emerge from the door before walking into the room to peer at her.
“Nothing” She answered with a shrug.
Asher searched her face, trying to see if he could discover what made her smile but her face was so guarded he gave up eventually. Once again, he really hoped that she wasn’t planning his death because he couldn’t put it past her not to try something like that.
“Are you hungry?’’ he asked and she nodded.
“Okay, I will have Izzy bring some for you while you bathe and dress up”
“Okay” She agreed readily and Asher eyes narrowed but said nothing but the look on his face told her just how confused her behavior was causing him as he continued to throw little glances at her direction while grabbing new clothes to put on.
