Chapter 70
Asher was startled awake by a tap on his shoulder. He had fallen asleep the previous night on the chair. His muscles ached and his shoulders were stiff due to the fact that he had literally sat all through the night before dozing at some point.
Eva sighed, staring at his stressed man who sat before her eyes. She could vividly remembered when he was only a little boy. How much he loved to play by the lake and Now, he was shouldering a lot of responsibility that was seemingly too much for him.
“Sorry I woke you up” Eva apologized with a smile.
“Its okay. I didn’t want to doze off, I guess I just did” Asher replied, rubbing off the aches at the back of his neck.
Eva replied with a nod.
“How is she?’’ Asher asked.
His eyes held a hopeful glint as he stared back at her, one that Eva hadn’t seen for a very long time now which also made her realized just how much he cared for her.
“She woke up in the early hours of this morning but is sleeping right now’’ she said.
“Really?, that’s uhm, great, Eva” Asher said happily and she nodded.
Gone was the tension that had gathered around his muscles earlier. Now, he was fully awake alert.
“Once the medication I gave her wears off, she will be able to stay awake much longer”
Asher heaved a huge sigh of relief as he stood smiling from ear to ear. It took everything in him to stop himself from jumping on Eva out of sheer excitement.
“Can I go still see her? Asher asked after a while.
He wanted to see her for himself.
“You can but I must warn you, Asher, do not try to force her awake” Eva said.
Asher knew she was right. Elizabeth was still not out of the waters yet, she was still hanging on the line and he wasn’t about to do anything that would make her situation worse.
“I understand” Asher agreed.
“Good. Failure to do this and i’ll have no other option but to kick you out” Eva warned yet again.
The look on her face was one of all seriousness. She wasn’t joking and Asher knew that he’d be a fool to go against her orders.
She didn’t care whose toes she stepped on when it came to doing what is best for her patients. Asher didn’t know if it was true but rumor had it that the council of elders were even scared to talk to her because she was very strict and a no-nonsense woman but if there was anyone who had the kindest heart, it was still Eva.
His mother wasn’t wrong when she appointed her chief pack doctor. Asher had seen first hand how she took care of her patients. It’s no wonder she was good at what she did because she was down to earth and took no nonsense.
“I promise Eva, i’ll do as you’ve said” Asher assured her once again.
Eva smiled before walking into an inner office. She needed to rest. Asher had seen the stress line on her face, she was practically up all through the night herself, taking care of Elizabeth to the best of her abilities.
Asher sighed, walking into the room Elizabeth was. His heart broke when he saw how pale she looked. The woman that lay before his eyes was a complete shadow of who she was just days ago.
“What have i done?” Asher g*****d.
She was asleep and the only indication that she was still alive was the steady rise and fall of her chest. Asher walked up to her, staring down at her with a pained look in his eyes. He never wanted it to be this way but he was too stubborn to see that from the onset.
“I’m sorry” he whispered.
Eva’s warning was long forgotten at this point as he reached over and took her hand in his. It was cool to the touch, something that wasn’t normal.
“Forgive me, Elizabeth” Asher muttered.
He was trying all he could to fight back the tears that threatened to fall. He wasn’t one to cry but seeing her in that condition was enough to break his heart.
“Why am I not surprised to see that you are trying to wake her up?” Eva said teasingly from behind, walking into the room.
Asher quickly sniffed back his tears before wiping off the rest and then turned to face her.
“I just got carried away” Asher explained.
“It’s okay, I didn’t think you were going to follow my instructions to the letters” Eva laughed.
Asher let out a breath before glancing back at Elizabeth. “She’s so pale”.
“That’s a side effect of the drugs I had given her and also her present situation. Trust me, she’ll be fine” Eva assured him.
“These fainting episodes are becoming too frequent. Are you sure it’s normal?” Asher asked with narrowed eyes.
“You need to understand something. Elizabeth is entering her last stage of the pregnancy. Since this is her first child, we might have to expect more of these occurrence. It’s really nothing to be worried about”
“So this is bound to happen again?” Asher asked.
“For now, i can’t say but there is every possibility that it would” she said truthfully and he let out a low growl.
Looking at her, Asher realized that he wouldn’t be able to take care of her as much as Eva would. The only logical thing he could do was if he left her here for Eva to take care of.
“I want to ask for a favor” Asher said.
“Go on, You can ask me anything”
“Can I leave Elizabeth here with you, pending the time she’ll deliver? If the pain return, i’ll want her to be where she can get adequate help and you are in the best position to do that” Asher said.
“Is that even a request? Of course Asher, i’m ready to take care of her” Eva said clapping her hand excitedly.
“Thank you so much, you have no idea what this means to me. Thank you Eva” Asher said and grasped her hand firmly.
“You welcome”
Asher let go of her hand and then took a step back.
“I need to freshen up, I know I stink right now” He said between laugh and Eva nodded.
“Yes you do, now go on. I will watch her till you return”.
Asher laughed even more, before turning towards the door. At that moment, he just felt like a heavy weight had just been lifted off his shoulders.
He left the room, heading towards his quarters to freshen up. Asher had a lot of things to do but decided they could wait.
Elizabeth was top priority for now.
