Chapter 75
Beth was really glad that Alex came to see her. She was quite surprised that he came with lot of gifts, something she wasn’t expecting. What he brought were mostly food and a pillow for her aching.
“How very wonderful, Alex” She muttered with a sigh before relaxing against the soft surface tucked in between her back.
Beth imagined what her life would have been like if her fate had gotten entangled with Alex instead of Asher. She truly doubt he would have been looking for revenge and neither of them would be in that situation either.
Even though she would have really loved for things to be different, she knew it would be and she is probably stuck with Asher until her fate is decided by him and his council members.
Her thought wandered some more before her gaze settled back on the things Alex had brought her and couldn’t help but smile at how thoughtful he really was. Deep down, she secretly wished that it was Asher who had come to see her and brought her these gifts
He was the father and that was the right thing to do but apparently, he didn’t care about any of that. Instead, he was busy frolicking with the whore, Kara. Elizabeth sighed, running her gaze away.
“Are you alright darling?” a voice said, cutting into her thought.
Elizabeth looked up to see Eva walking into her room with a smile on her face. Elizabeth was quite glad that she was here, at least she had someone she could talk to. Eva took the chair facing the couch Beth was sitting on.
This was the first time Beth would be seeing her off her work clothes. She was flowing gown and jacket. Her hair was still tied in a high ponytail. Eva appeared younger than her age in that very attire.
Elizabeth smiled, “You look different”
“I will take that as a compliment, Elizabeth. So thank you” She said and Beth nodded.
Eva leaned forward, placing her fore and middle index on Beth’s wrist to check her pulse, “How do you feel?”
“I feel fine”
Eva answered with a and her eyes narrowed.
“ Can I ask you a personal question?”
Eva let out a sigh. “go ahead and ask”
“Do you um, have family? Children, husband perhaps?”
“I have a sister and my parent are late and no kids. None of those” She said with an underlying sadness and she knew better than to push the discussion further.
“I’m sorry about your parent”
“Nothing to be sorry for. My parent lived well” Eva said with a shrug.
She held her wrist for another minute before she released her with a relief sigh. Something in the way she did it told her she was satisfied that she was okay.
“Everything looks good”
“Okay” Beth smiled.
Eva couldn’t help but notice that Elizabeth had a sad expression on her face. She had worked with many people in the past and noticing this little mood shift came to her naturally.
“What’s the matter Beth? I know something is wrong so don’t even try to lie to me about it” Eva said gently.
Elizabeth had forgotten how thoughtful she was. She was a doctor after all and there was really nothing that could be kept hidden from her. She just had this ability to see through you.
“Its nothing really Eva” She expressed with a forced smile.
“I know there is something, so out with it” Eva chuckled.
Elizabeth remained quiet for a while as she sat biting her inner cheek to keep from spilling the truth out to Eva. It’s not because she doesn’t trust him. She was just ashamed to admit the truth.
She was upset about Asher not coming to see her ever since she moved with Eva and she doesn’t even know why it’s bothers her but it simply does.
“Or are you missing Asher? Your Alpha?” Eva asked with a knowing grin on her face.
That was far from it. Elizabeth didn’t know if she had the ability to miss him after all he had done. He had hurt her badly and it would only take a miracle for her to miss him in that manner.
“What? Oh no Eva. I don’t miss him and he is not my Alpha”
If Eva was surprised about this, she hid it well but he could see the real reply in her eyes but since she won’t admit it then there was no point to push even further.
“Okay, child. If you say so” She teasingly, causing her to frown.
Elizabeth’s next words were cut short by someone running into the room. It was one of the junior staff that worked with Eva. There was a look of panic in her face and both of them knew it was an emergency.
“One of the women is in labor” The young nurse said before her eyes darted towards Elizabeth.
Eva was already on her feet and out of the door in record time. She waved at Beth, telling her to be careful before she disappeared.
Beth sighed, walking out of the room. She couldn’t just be there, doing nothing. Elizabeth walked outside and was glad to see that some pregnant women were out there talking to themselves and she decided to join them as well.
“Hi” Beth smiled at one of the women and she smiled back, creating room for her on the large bench for her to sit. She introduced herself as Alana and so did the other pregnant women seated around as well.
This was Elizabeth’s favorite thing to do. She felt so free and alive with them. There were no accusatory glances or talks because they didn’t know where she came from. All the women were from a neighboring pack which worked out fine for her.
They didn’t know about her circumstances and so, she was easily accepted into their midst. Beth realized that if she had her way, she would have loved to stay here forever because the peace she felt couldn’t be compared to anything else. She never knew what the world held for her and now that she was experiencing it, she never wanted it to end.
Most of the women were wives to Alphas and some were just pack members who wanted to ensure a good delivery for their baby as well.
The weeks that followed were pretty fun for Elizabeth. She learnt so much from the women and also shared little things about her to them as well. She engaged in various games and exercises Eva had said would be good for her and the baby.
The time for her to deliver was fast approaching and at that moment, Elizabeth couldn’t wait to meet her baby and at the back of her mind, she knew she’d do anything to protect it with everything she had.
