Alex and Beth walked towards the grand hall with her emotions spilling all over the place. She didn’t know what to expect especially when it came down to the elders. Those bunch always have a way of leaving her stomach in a twist. It’s even worst that Asher is not there but Alex had assured her of his protection and all she could do at that point was trust that things would turn out well.

It has to turn out well. For the sake of her baby, she has to get through their interrogation alive and go home. It took more than convincing for her to actually agreed for Izzy to watch him while they left.

It was either that or carry the baby along and bringing her child anywhere close to those bloody monsters is something she would never do, instead, she had to trust Izzy to watch him with the full assurance that nothing would happened to her son while she is away.

Just as they were about to walk in, Alex stopped abruptly. Beth has no idea what he was doing but she could tell he was sniffing the environment, probably scanning for dangers that lurked around and he within the hall.

The last thing they both wanted is to walk into a trap. One can’t be too careful around those men. They are vicious and vile and has a way of manipulating situations to their favor.

Alex doesn’t want to be caught unawares. He wanted to be ready and ready he was.

“What’s wrong?” Elizabeth asked in a small voice as she stood stiffly behind him.

“It’s nothing. Just making sure we are not walking to our death” Alex replied and watched as her eyes widen a little bit.

“Come on, let go”

They walked in together and stood before the elders. Elder Marcus sat at the head of the table, his eyes cold and calculative as he narrowed them between the two pairs standing before him.

Elizabeth could feel his gaze burning through her face but she refused to look at his direction. Instead, she lowered her gaze to the floor as she stood with her hands clasped tightly before her.

“Greetings my elders” Alex said with a slight bow and Elizabeth did same.

Most of the elders murmured back replies while Elder Marcus simply waited for the muttering noises to die down before he cleared his throat slightly, his eyes moving between them curiously.

“It’s so good to see you taking your duty seriously, Alexander” He said simply.

“I’m glad I haven’t disappointed my elders yet” Alex said with sarcasm as he helped Elizabeth to a chair while preferring to stand and deal with the elders.

“I was summoned for a meeting, is there something I should know?” Alex asked shortly.

“We called you here because we believe that Asher has run away from his responsibility as Alpha of this pack” Elder Marcus said accusingly.

While Elizabeth let out a quiet gasp at the accusing words, Alex simply waited his turn to reply. In fact, he didn’t look in the least surprise that, they had already assumed Asher’s reasons for leaving the pack on such short notice.

“No, he hasn’t. Asher has only gone to replace a solution to your threats” Alex said simply with a shrug.

Elder Marcus laughed, a deep belly laughter that was devoid of any warmth. It was soulless and lifeless and Alex could tell, he knows something that none of them does.

“Is that so?” Elder Marcus asked before adding, “Are you saying we are lying?”

“I never said that. I only told you why our Alpha is currently absent from performing his duties. And it’s not because he can’t handle them as you have so claimed but because there are some things that needed his urgent attention”

“Hmmm” He said simply.

Elizabeth couldn’t help but bite her inner cheek slightly the moment Elder Marcus made that sound. She already knew it to be a demeaning and rude way of response especially when the respond given doesn’t suit his own personal expectations.

The few times she had been called to stand before them, he always made that sound before every one of his reminder for Asher to have her executed. And now, she can see it coming.

“Since you have decided to step into his shoes so well, then you might as well do what he didn’t have the balls to do” The older man said slowly, his voice deep with meaning underlying his words.

Alex shifted from one foot to the next, “How do you mean?”

Elder Marcus eyes only darted back at Elizabeth before settling back on Alex who had a confused expression going on, on his face.

“Don’t act dumb with me, Alexander. The hunter’s daughter’s remains a symbol of Asher’s weakness and what had happened to his wife. And as councilors, it’s our duty to enforce some rules once it’s been put in place”

Alex decided to remain quiet because he knew exactly the point he was driving at and there was no point arguing with someone like him. He would never listen to him and the best line of action is to let him finish.

“The hunter’s daughter must be executed, so hand her over” Elder Marcus said all of a sudden, his hands balled into a tight fist and seating on the table before him.

Alex wasn’t sure if he heard him correctly but from Elizabeth reaction, he could tell he had heard just fine. The elders just requested that he hand her over to be executed again despite all Asher had said before he left.

“Hand who over?” Alex asked, his expression bored.

“The woman beside you. Hand the woman, Elizabeth Lincoln over” he repeated again, this time, he looked pissed and Alex could only scoff under his breath, a small smile playing at the corner of his lips.

“I’m sorry but what makes you think I would give her up to be killed if Asher didn’t”

There was sudden muttering among the elders before another Elder spoke up, his voice louder above the noise.

“Are you disobeying us?”

Alex gave a careless shrug, “I’m simply following Asher’s order. He is my Alpha and his word is law. Anything else is just demand and request and it’s not in my place to grant. Elizabeth and his son will remain unharmed until his return. Anyone who think or wishes otherwise can wait until then but for now, no one lay a finger on her” Alex said, fiercely.

“You dare to stand against us?” He asked darkly, his eyes narrowing into slit.

“I dare to protect my Alpha’s honor and everything that is right” Alex countered right back.

Elder Marcus looked thoughtful as he continued to stare at Alex unwavering stance against their decision. Elizabeth looked like she was about to passed out as she sat rigidly on the chair. Her hands clasped together and placed against her laps.

“Do you know the Alpha seat is contestable? Especially when the seat is vacant for two weeks unattended?”

Alex gave a throaty growl, “Don’t say it. Asher is Alpha and that’s final”

“Asher is Alpha but he is not here and that means anyone can replace him”

Elizabeth let out another gasp, realization finally dawning on her. These men are even more scheming than she thought.

Alex took a step closer and then paused, his hands balled into fist by his side. “I will not have this council disrespect and taint his name while he is away. Anyone who challenges his title will have to go through me” Alex said threateningly but the elders looked to be anything but intimidated. If anything, they looked rather pleased by his reaction.

“Asher doesn’t have to be replaced by someone else Alexander. You are his Beta and most qualified. You can take his place without any challenge”

Alex was dumbfounded as he stood staring at the faces before him.

“Yes, Alexander. Just say yes and you will become the new Alpha”
