The Alpha’s Mute Mate -
Episode 69
HUDSON
TWO WEEKS LATER
After the attack on the pack was dealt with, and we even killed any remaining rogues that came close to the pack, who were known to be Alfred’s followers. We all thought he was still alive until there was a burnt-out body which we confirmed was Alfred’s was found in the forest clearing where Danica and Brooke were attacked years ago. How ironic you might think that he would end up there. There was still no sign of Brooke.
I’ve been keeping myself busy looking after the pack; my father has been giving me more alpha duties and letting me be more hands-on when giving out work to other people. Beta Logan has also been training Rex to become my Beta.
Amy and Shane left the pack with Alpha Josh, his mate Annabella, and Todd four days later after helping out with the damages. I was so stupid ever to have thought about having Amy here; we’re just friends. Nothing else, and that’s how it will be forever. About a week after they left, Todd sent four huge books with loads of information about Phoenix shifters. I have them ready in the room for when Brooke comes home.
Daisy and Rex are slowly getting back to the way they were before all this crap started.
Since the whole situation, Daisy and I still haven’t talked; I want to. I miss my sister, who used to annoy me at times.
There was a knock at the door to the office.
Lately, this is where you will replace me, whether it is in my office or bedroom. I don’t eat with other people as I replace it weird to be around everyone who has mates when I know my mate is not back, so I have taken up eating in either room.
“Come in,” I shout.
The door opens and in walks my sister; she was carrying my food on a tray. She placed it on the table by the window and looks at me. “I think we need to talk, don’t you, bro,” she says as she walks back to the door to close it. I watch her as she walks back and takes the seat in front of the desk.
“How are you?” She asks suddenly.
I look back at her and sigh “I’m ok, I just wish Brooke would come back,” I said.
Daisy gives me a small smile. “I wish she were here to Hudson,” she says in a small voice.
There was silence; this shouldn’t be hard to talk to my sister.
Suddenly Daisy clears her throat. “Well, I best…..” she starts, but I cut her off. “I didn’t mean for anything like this to happen with Brooke,” I said, which made her close her mouth and look at me. “I was a fool back then when I was younger. I believed in the whole lie that Alfred fed us to believe that humans were weak, I wanted to be the best, and I wanted everyone to like me,” I said “I was a jackass to everyone, I was the alpha’s son, and I was treating everyone with disrespect.”
I look at my sister. “I never thought Brooke was my mate when she was five, and I was hell-bent on making her pay as everyone was horrible to her, except for you,” I said, “But I never thought I would have this second, well, I mean third chance to have her by my side.”
“You are right,” she says suddenly, making me look at her. “You were a jackass to everyone.”
I know I deserve everything she has to say. “I was her friend, best friend, Hudson. You made her leave the first time, which resulted in her getting attacked by a rogue. Brooke told us that she knew about you and what you said that night, she wanted to stay in the pack, but when she overheard you and Rex talk, she thought, if that’s what you think about her, then that’s what everyone else thought about her.”
I can feel the pain sweeping in at what I caused my mate that night.
She looks at me. “You f****d Madison, and even when you found out you had a mate, but when you left, you fell in love with a human girl,” she says with a snarl. “You are a complete d**k Hudson, I thought my brother was better than that,” she says. “I want to forgive you, I truly do, but Hudson, you need to do it for yourself and Brooke but mainly for yourself.”
Daisy stands up and walks towards the door but stops to look over her shoulder at me. “I want my brother back, but at the moment, you need to make sure you know what it is you want before she comes back, no women and no more secrets,” she says. “Make this a fresh start, clean slate with Brooke; show her that this is where she belongs with you, and she is the only person you want.”
With that, she leaves the office, and I have to admit Daisy’s right. I need to make sure Brooke knows that she is the only one for me. Ever since Brooke has been here, I have never looked at another woman. I don’t want to.
I push back on the chair and walk over to the window. I stare out, the rain from earlier is back again, and it pours down. I can see a figure on the steps, and I can’t help but smile.
I grab my coat and head to the front door of the packhouse.
As I open it, I could see the figure stand to the side and look towards the forest clearing “Still no sign,” she says.
I walk up to her and look at her; Danica and I have been doing this for the last two weeks every evening until the sun up. Sleep comes but not a lot as we both want Brooke back.
I look towards the clearing, but Danica clears her throat. “I spoke to Jackson again,” she says, and I can’t help but turn to look at her, her eyes say more, but her face looks blank. “I found out more about the situation he was in, and I also did some research about some things too.”
I didn’t say anything; Danica thought it was weird that someone would let a stranger keep a child that wasn’t theirs; she went to a friend and mentioned it to them both my mother and her went into detective mode and started looking into it all.
“What did you replace out?” I asked her.
“Jackson can’t remember much due to the drinking he was doing; he remembers that there was a woman who was a legal representative that he had; he was given her name by someone, he cannot remember who even gave him the number. He kept it all, so when he handed it to me, and I was a little surprised to replace out who she was,” she says and looks directly at me. “She was Todd’s mate Kelsey; she pretended to be his legal counsel; there was something else that caught our eye; Alfred had someone on the inside of the counsel to be the judge.”
I stare back at her in shock. “What would Alfred have gained by doing all that? Why Brooke?” I asked, feeling slightly confused.
“Well, Jackson came with Luna and me to meet the judge, but when we got there, the main head of the council told us that he died, brutally killed by a woman,” she says and pulls out a file to hand to me. I opened it, and there were photos of the two people in question; I couldn’t help but growl.
“What is it?” Asks Danica.
I turn the photo over and show her. “This is Kelsey and her scheming father,” I say through gritted teeth. “Her father was banished the same time as Alfred as he was a true follower of his beliefs; Kelsey was sent away a few weeks before they were banished to Alpha Josh’s pack due to her behavior towards me where Todd found she was his mate. Her father was bad news,” I said as I skimmed over the folder. “He became a council member and under a false name?” I ask her.
Danica looks at me and nods. “Well, they were not too happy with him; Luna Sophia phoned Todd and told him what happened, let’s just say the council members there do not like to deal with Todd due to his furious mood,” she says with a smirk “They called him in, and now he is placed in the cells for his pending death. Jackson also found out that Aubrey was drugging him during many events that’s why he can’t remember anything,” she says.
I don’t say anything, I know they are trying to sort it out, but I can also understand why Danica is so reluctant to get back with him; after everything that happened to her and what he did to Brooke too, she also wants Brooke back.
“I know she will be coming soon, Hudson, and I think you should agree to what your father has asked of you and become the alpha to the pack,” she says; I can’t help but look at her with a small smile, but she carries on “We can have many celebrations, you becoming alpha will be the first one,” she says “Everyone here needs a celebration after what happened here whether Brooke is here or not, we need an alpha who is willing to make changes not just for werewolves but for everyone. We all need to feel safe here including humans and other shifters.”
I look at her; she has a few tears running down her cheeks. “Make this a haven for all kinds of shifters and humans; I bet many will replace their mates when you do.”
I smile.
Danica and I stand in silence for a further few hours till she gets up to go inside, but she stops by the door. “Hudson, become the alpha of the pack, and Brooke will be here soon,” she says.
I look out at the clearing, I promised my mother I would try and sleep more, but I can’t leave knowing that Brooke should be here with me.
I have been putting off being Alpha as I wanted to do all that with Brooke, both of us becoming Alpha and Luna together. But I don’t know when she will be here, but I know Danica’s right. Our pack needs a celebration, something to look forward to.
I open a mind link to my father “Dad, can we arrange for my alpha ceremony soon?” I ask him.
“Hudson, are you sure you want to do it? What about waiting for Brooke?” He asks. I can feel his happiness sweep in and take hold of me.
“I think we need some sort of celebration for the pack and handing the pack over to me; we can start doing everything to make everything ready for Brooke before she comes back and dad,” I say as I get up from the top step of the packhouse “How about we do it in three weeks?”
My father chuckles. “Very well, son, three weeks we will make you the alpha of the pack,” he says.
I close the mind link down, head back inside the packhouse and head straight to my room.
Once inside my room, the window blows open, and something comes inside. I quickly run over to the window to close it. I looked around but couldn’t replace what came into my room until I looked at my bed. Something landed on my bed that caught my eye, a feather.
I looked at it; it was orange with streaks of gold running through it and some purple. Asher comes closer to the surface and sniffs the air; he whines slightly. “MATE,” he says in a whisper.
I can’t help but walk over to the window to look out. I hold the feather up and stare at it but close my eyes to concentrate on the scent that surrounds the feather. My eyes flew open, and I stared at it; the feather smelled like Brooke. I stare back out of the window, but there was still no sign of her.
Asher looks back at me, he hasn’t moved, but as soon as I go back to the bed and sit down, he starts to pant a little in my head. “What’s wrong with you?” I ask.
Asher lays down with his paws stretched out in front of him, and his tongue hangs out. “Mate will be here soon; I can feel it,” he says with a smile on his face.
I can’t help but feel slightly calmer knowing that.
I wish it were sooner.
