BROOKE

I can hear talking from outside the door, even someone crying.

I know it’s my father, but I don’t want to be here.

I look down and take all the tubes out of my arms and everywhere else I have them. I looked at my arm with the metal pole sticking out. I can move it, but it is sore.

I slowly get up out of bed; I’m in a hideous hospital gown. I don’t care, as I don’t own much clothing. I looked behind to see I was wearing underwear, which to my relief, I was.

I stood and tried to take a few steps at a time. The pain was manageable.

I looked around the room, but I was taken back by the stuff I found. Many people must have been to see me, but I don’t know who as I don’t know anyone.

I looked towards the window, walking over. I noticed I was on the second floor. I know I can’t go through the door as everyone is out there.

Then a thought came to my mind; I could smash the glass and run for it.

I looked around the room and noticed a portable fan on the unit by the bed. I could use it; I walked over and unplugged it. I grab and throw it through the window, making the window smash completely.

I know people heard the glass breaking. I knew I didn’t have long as they would have heard the window smash. I climbed out of the window, only to cut my leg. I run; I can feel b***d trickling down my leg from my wound as I do so, but I know I can’t stop.

I didn’t get that far before I heard something pounding behind me. I turned to look, only to trip over my foot. I looked up, and my eyes grew wide; a giant wolf stood a few feet behind me.

I’m so petrified that I open my mouth, but nothing comes out. I can feel tears prick behind my eyes.

I pray to god that the wolf doesn’t hurt me or even worse, eat me.

The wolf stops and stares at me. He c***s his head to the side, sniffs the air, then a low growl escapes him.

I move back as he moves forward. He stops and whines.

I can hear people around, but my eyes never look at them as I keep them focused on the wolf in front of me.

No one’s going to help me.

“Brooke!” shouts my father.

I look back at him as tears escape my eyes; I don’t want him anywhere near me. The wolf just stands there, looking at me, not moving.

“Brooke, he won’t hurt you,” says my father as he comes closer to me.

I shuffled back away from him, shaking my head.

He stops suddenly, hurt in his eyes.

“Brooke, look at me,” someone says softly. I looked towards the woman who just spoke, “Your dad is right; the wolf won’t hurt you.”

I turned my attention to the wolf that had now laid down, moving slowly towards me in a crouching position.

I tried to get up onto my feet and move back but fell as my leg hurt me.

“You’re injured Brooke; let me help you,” the woman says; she takes a step closer to me.

I looked at her and then at the wolf. I don’t know whether to trust her or not.

“My name is Lun…….Sophia,” she says in a soft voice.

I look at her as she steps closer and bends down by my side, my eyes not leaving the wolf.

She puts a strand of my hair back behind my ear, making me look at her.

She looks at me and smiles. “He won’t hurt you, Brooke. He is a big softie of a wolf,” she says as she looks towards the wolf and smiles.

The wolf comes closer, and I quickly grab her hand.

“It’s ok; he wants to make sure you’re okay,” she says, looking down at me.

I feel the warmth from her.

The wolf edges closer to me, and he sniffs my leg.

He is enormous, enormous. But he crouches down further, so he is not towering over me.

I held onto Sophia’s hand tighter.

The wolf doesn’t do anything. He just lies there with his nose pressed against my leg.

He looks at me, and I keep my eyes on it in return. My heart is beating fast in my chest.

“See, I told you, he is a big softie,” she says; she moves towards my injured leg and sees the b***d. “You have a cut that might need stitches; we need to take you back to the hospital.”

I start to panic. I look back at where I ran from, and my heart races again. I don’t want to go back there.

“It’s ok, and I will stay with you. Doctor Frank is amazing,” she says. I look towards the people that have gathered. I hear a growl coming from the wolf. I move closer to Sophia as the wolf looks at the people; I start to shake.

Sophia looks down at me. “He is making sure no one comes near you,” she says softly. I looked towards where my father and another two men were standing. My father holds a woman’s hand; she looks at me and smiles. I turned my head away. That’s who he left me for, he left me for her, and he left me with that monster.

A tear escapes my eye as my mind has so many dark thoughts running around.

Sophia looks down at me. “No one else will come, only me. Okay?” She says as she stands up and holds out her hand to me.

I look back at the wolf as it stares at me.

I grab her hand and lift myself up, only to fall again, but the wolf moves and catches me.

His thick black fur is all silky. He’s really warm to the touch. I move my hand away from him and stumble back, but Sophia catches me. “I’ve got you, Brooke,” she says. She places her hand around my waist and leads me limping away.

I could feel eyes on me, but I looked over my shoulder and noticed the wolf walking toward my father and the others watching me.

I looked forward as Sophia guided me back into the big building, and once we were inside, she led me to a different hospital room.

When we get inside the room, she places me on the bed, grabs a seat that is next to the bed, and sits down.

After a few moments, the doctor from before walks in. “Lun……I mean Sophia, can I look at Brooke’s leg, please?” he says.

He looks at me and smiles. “I won’t hurt you. I brought you this, too. So you can talk,” he says as he hands me the notebook.

I smile.

The doctor gets to work and cleans the wound, then stitches it up. I have another scar on my leg. I look at my bare legs, which have many scars.

Once the doctor leaves and closes the door behind him, Sophia places a blanket over me. “Let’s make sure you’re nice and warm,” she says.

I lean back on the bed, which is soft.

I looked at her and grabbed the notebook.

“You look familiar to me,” I wrote. “How is that?”

She reads the page and gives me a huge smile. “Brooke, what do you remember before living with that horrible woman?” she says, looking at me.

I stare at the notebook and only write what I know.

“I only remember the wolf that attacked my mother, nothing else. I remember leaving a big house as my father left me in my room because he was heartbroken about my mother, then he married Aubrey,” I wrote and handed it to her, her eyes looking over my written words.

She looks at me and gives me a small smile. “Well, you used to live here with your parents. This used to be your home until that night. We were having some trouble, and your mother was scared. She wanted to protect you. I was best friends with your mother,” she says and holds my hand in hers. “You were best friends with my children, Daisy and Hudson.”

I looked at her blankly.

I can’t remember anyone from here. How is that?

I shake my head and take my hand out of hers; she looks hurt.

I grabbed the pen and the notebook and then started writing again.

“I don’t remember, sorry,” I wrote.

I turned over onto my side, away from her. But I don’t want to remember where I lost the one person I miss the most.

Sophia stands up and moves the blanket up to my shoulders. She leaves her hand on my shoulder for a little while. I could feel her warmth.

“I’m sorry about everything, Brooke,” she said sadly, “I will go outside the door to talk to your father as he is worried about you.”

I don’t look back at her; I need to be on my own.

My thoughts were running wild, but one thing was on it more than anything. Why couldn’t I remember being here?
