CAULDER

I was lying on my bed with a wet washcloth over my face when I heard a soft knock on my door. I sat up and saw Harper slipping through my door, closing it quietly behind her. She quickly joined me on the bed, sitting with her feet tucked below her. "I take it things didn't go too well?" Harper asked.

I huffed in response. "What gave it away?"

"That look on your face for one." Harper reached forward and poked my nose. The gesture brought a smile to my face. She always had a knack for making me smile when it felt like nothing could.

I grabbed her arms and pulled her into me as I lay back. My body relaxed with Harper pressed against me, and I took a moment to just breathe in her scent. "I don't understand why my mother is being so irrational about all of this. She didn't even give us a chance to show her we were doing something to help the pack. Remy looked absolutely devastated, and she wouldn't even talk to me after."

Harper reached up and ran her fingers through my hair. "Then you are going to have to try again. Make your mom see reason."

"Yeah. My dad reacted more logically. He seems more open about it, but I'm still worried. Blade needs that injury looked at before it gets worse, and we are currently under strict house arrest." I let out a groan. I needed to come up with a solution fast, but nothing came to mind.

"Maybe I could bring some stuff to Blade until your parents see your side of things. I'm probably not being watched as closely as you and Remy are right now," Harper suggested.

"Your mother already wants to kill me. I don't think that's a good idea," I said. Beta Rie still hadn't spoken to me since the night Harper and I had been caught sneaking out. I was sure she would be updated with the truth about the excursion soon as well, which would only make matters worse.

Harper pressed her hands into my chest and pushed off of me to help her sit up. "I can handle myself, and I will deal with my mother, if it comes down to it."

I stroked her cheek. "I trust you can handle yourself. There's just been a lot going on, and it makes me nervous to have you go alone. I would feel better if I went with you."

"What about being grounded?" she asked.

I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm already in big trouble. What's a little more?" I went to grab my jacket, but a pang of fear shot through me. I stumbled backwards, sitting on the bed as I held my breath. This fear wasn't my own, but it was affecting my body as if it was. My heart raced, and my eyes widened, but as I looked around, I couldn't replace a reason for this reaction.

Harper rushed to my side and grabbed my shoulder. "What's wrong? You just got really pale."

I looked at her slowly, unable to stop my hands from shaking. "Something's wrong."

"What?" She looked around the room and came up empty, just like I did.

I closed my eyes and focused on the feeling, trying to figure out what was happening. At first my vision was dark, but then it felt like I was being transported. I could feel the breeze on my skin and hear the rustling of leaves. Then I saw soft hands holding onto Blade's back as if those hands were on my own. My vision shifted to the side, and I could see another person with crimson eyes standing several feet away. Whoever this man was was filled with a devious nature, and it only made me feel more afraid. When I opened my eyes, I was back in my room again. "Whoa," I said as I gathered myself. I looked at Harper, who had her eyebrows raised in anticipation. "I think Remy's in trouble."

Remy and I could often feel each other's various emotions through our twin bond. It wasn't hard to know when she was stressed or happy, especially when she was close by. The stronger the emotion, the easier it was to sense her from farther away, but the longest distance it had ever happened was across the pack house, and it was never like this. It had always been limited to a feeling, but right now I was sure I had just seen through Remy's eyes, and my body experienced her fear as if it was my own.

"How could she be in trouble here?" Harper asked. She was familiar with how our bond worked, so I completely understood her confusion.

"She snuck out and met Blade at the lake." I said this with confidence. With how angry she was, I was sure Remy didn't hesitate to run away.

"Are you sure?"

I grabbed my jacket and started rushing out of the room. "I'm positive. We need to hurry. I think there's another vampire there."

Even though I knew it would cause more issues, I opened up a link channel with my parents. I wasn't about to rush into a dangerous situation without others knowing what was going on.

"Remy is in trouble, and we need to go help her now." I kept the message brief, knowing there wasn't enough time to explain the details. Remy needed help now. I rushed out of my room and headed for the front room of the pack house. Harper was a step behind me the entire time.

"What's going on?" My father was the first one to respond.

"I don't have time to explain. We have to go now. Meet me in front of the pack house." I would worry about the consequences later.

My parents were on the porch just seconds after Harper and I had made it there. They didn't hesitate at all, and I was sure it was because they were still on edge from Remy's injury. I was just glad they hadn't been away on patrol or something, because we needed to go as soon as possible. I didn't know who it was who approached Remy and Blade, but based on the fear Remy was feeling, I knew it wasn't good. "Where's Remy?" my mother asked the moment she saw me. "Why isn't she here?"

"Probably because you told her she could never see her mate without even giving him a chance," I snapped. I didn't care if my mother was trying to protect Remy anymore. It was a poor excuse, and I was tired of the lies. "If you knew anything about her, you would know that she has wanted to replace her mate for as long as I can remember, but we don't have time for this. We have to go."

My mother didn't respond to me, and I could see her face harden. I knew I was being harsh on her, but she was the parent here. She should have known better.

"Lead the way," my father said. The air was thick with tension between all of us, but that would have to be dealt with later.

I shifted into my werewolf form, and the others followed behind me as I sprinted as fast as I could to get to Remy.

REMY

"I can't leave now," Draven said, taking a few steps closer to us. "Not when things are getting interesting. I wasn't expecting to replace you here, brother, but I supposed that would explain some things."

Brother? Blade didn't mention anything about Draven being his brother when he told me the story of his past. Blade's body was tense, and I could feel a killer aura emerging from him. Even if Draven was Blade's brother, it was clear that they were not on good terms. "You're outnumbered here. Leave before I change my mind about letting you," Blade cautioned.

Draven simply laughed in response. "You know I'm stronger than you, and do you really think that werewolf you're shielding will be able to do any damage to me? You already know what the outcome will be if we fight, and it won't end well for you." Blade didn't change his posture. He kept completely still, acting as if he wasn't phased by Draven's words, but I knew the truth. I could feel the tension oozing off of his body. His fear hung thickly in the air, and it clung to my throat, making it impossible to speak. Blade knew he wasn't strong enough to defeat Draven on his own, and he didn't think we could fight the vampire together, either.

"Leave now." Blade's voice deepened as he mustered up as much courage as possible.

"I'll tell you what. If you give me that beautiful creature behind you, I'll leave you alone right now." I could feel Draven's eyes on me, even through Blade. There was a sinister l**t that filled him, and I knew I could never go with him. Blade hissed at Draven and took a step forward, showing his sharpened nails as a threat. "If you touch one hair on her head, I'll slice your throat myself."

This only seemed to amuse Draven. I caught a glimpse of his crimson gaze, and he locked eyes with me, making it impossible to look away. My entire body shook with fear as I looked at the vampire. His eyes were soulless and hungry for pain.

"Have you really fallen for this wolf, brother? No wonder you're so weak. Our coven is much better off without you. Although, I do miss your antics, always trying to save those around you." Draven was still looking at me, and he licked his lips, making my body shudder in terror.

"What I'm doing with my life is none of your business. This is your last warning." Blade lowered his voice to a whisper and directed it towards me without taking his eyes off of Draven. "If anything happens, promise me you'll run."

I couldn't respond to Blade. Every cell in my body was telling me to run, but my muscles stayed frozen. I couldn't just leave Blade behind, knowing he was in danger. I didn't know much about Draven, but I knew the odds of fighting him would be better if it was two against one. I just hoped the small amount of training I had against vampires would be enough.

In the blink of an eye, I felt a hand around my throat, and there was hot breath in my ear. Draven had moved faster than Blade ever had, and I didn't see him coming.

"Don't move, and I won't harm you," Draven whispered in my ear.
