The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains -
Chapter 134 The Appearance of the Actress
As soon as those words left his mouth, everyone went dead silent, heads down, not daring to make a peep or voice their opinions.
Now, about Michael's dad, he was the epitome of integrity and loyalty in the business world-a real stand-up guy.
A lot of folks here today had thrived thanks to his leadership, their companies growing and prospering under his watch.
But now, with the main company in hot water, all they could think about was getting out unscathed. Typical businessmen, sure, but still pretty disheartening.
Did things really have to get so intense? Was mutual destruction the only way out?
Their bickering didn't faze Michael one bit. He had no plans to be like his dad, sacrificing his own happiness for others.
With him, it was simple: either stick with Smith Corporation through thick and thin or hit the road and fend for yourself. Remove the CEO? Only over his dead body!
And what scandal? He hadn't done anything wrong, so why should he step down?
Thinking this, Michael's thick eyebrows furrowed, a cold glint flashing in his narrowed eyes.
He exchanged a look with Andrew, a half-smile playing on his lips, and addressed everyone. "I'll clear up all the online rumors in three days. If you still want to hold a shareholders' meeting to remove me, you'd better think about how you're going to explain it to me before asking for my explanation."
With that, Michael pushed the door open and walked out of the conference room, leaving the poor Andrew behind to deal with the aftermath.
The vibe in the CEO's office was pretty weird.
Emily walked in first, not expecting Jessica to ditch her team and follow her in alone. It was clear she was here to see Michael.
Emily, trying to be polite, poured Jessica some juice and asked, "Are you here to see Mr. Smith?"
Jessica took off her sunglasses, not even glancing at Emily, and coldly replied, "I remember Michael's assistant was a guy, wasn't he?"
Emily couldn't help but feel a bit ticked off. How many women had Michael been flirting with behind her back?
"Yes, he is a man. I'm just a temporary assistant," Emily said.
Right after saying that, Emily felt a pang of regret. Her answer was too humble! She was Michael's wife, after all.
Jessica leaned back on the sofa, lazily crossing her legs like she owned the place. "Temporary? Where's Mr. Smith? When's he coming back?"
She dragged out the word "temporary," making it clear she looked down on her.
What! Just because she was a celebrity, she thought she was all that! Just because she was famous, she could look down on people! The worst part was, she didn't treat her fans like this! Being two-faced wasn't a good look; she better watch out if she wanted a long career in showbiz!
Emily couldn't help but sneer and curse in her heart.
Just then, Michael walked in.
Jessica, seeing him, rushed forward and hugged him excitedly. "You're finally back! I've been waiting for you forever!"
Emily stood there, stunned, watching her. She saw Jessica's chin slightly raised, her long neck like a proud white eagle soaring in the sky, so vivid and striking, full of presence.
And here she was, feeling like a thief sneaking a peek at someone else's happiness.
She was Michael's wife, for crying out loud!
Emily reminded herself again, but just as she was about to straighten up and say something, she heard Michael say, "Go make a reservation at the new restaurant downstairs." Seriously? Michael was treating her like an assistant. Looked like he was planning to have lunch with Jessica!
Emily felt a mix of emotions, like something was stuck in her chest.
She stood there for a long time before finally speaking, her voice tinged with bitterness, her expression showing a hint of self-mockery. "Got it."
When noon rolled around, Emily didn't go back upstairs; she just sat downstairs alone, waiting.
She didn't check the time, her phone was on Do Not Disturb, and her cheeks occasionally felt a burning pain.
Even though it only lasted a few seconds, it was excruciating.
It was a piercing pain, a numbing pain, and eventually, her whole body felt cold, engulfed by waves of icy despair.
At that moment, Emily finally understood. Evelyn had said Michael was going to break up with Sophia. It wasn't because of her, nor was it because of any so-called public opinion storm. It was because Michael had a new choice, a better choice than Sophia.
Jessica was dazzling, more charming than both her and Sophia. Of course, Michael had the right to choose the better option. What pained Emily was that Michael could choose anyone and love anyone, but he never chose her.
Thinking of this, Emily felt the sting from Evelyn's slap return. Her nose tingled, and she felt a wave of grievance that made her want to cry but couldn't.
After a while, Emily heard someone calling her. It was a woman's voice.
Emily turned her head and saw Jessica squinting her eyes, greeting her. "What are you doing here?"
Jessica ran over, her face bright, speaking to Emily. "Michael called you so many times, and you didn't answer even once!"
Was she blaming her?
Emily took a deep breath and replied, "I'm just his temporary assistant. I can't handle all his work matters, sorry. The reservation has been made for you. I won't be joining you, goodbye."
It seemed like an apology, but Emily's tone was full of sour jealousy.
Jessica was stunned for a moment, not knowing how to respond, but fortunately, Michael arrived in time.
He walked over to Jessica, and they looked so well-matched.
Emily suddenly recalled seeing a model on TV at the Smith Mansion a few days ago.
Michael had made a casual joke, "I think this height is just right for a girl. Otherwise, if you're as short as you, you can't even reach me in a fight, how unfair is that!"
At that time, Emily had retorted disdainfully, "Girls are perfect at any height, Michael. If there's domestic violence, it's your fault, not anyone else's."
Michael had said, "Emily, you can't go a day without arguing with me, can you? You replace fault with everything I say?"
Emily had retorted, "Isn't that right? Michael, if you're really that free, let's get a divorce."
Thinking back now, Emily couldn't help but let out a cold laugh. She thought it was a joke, but today, she realized she was the joke.
