Chapter 137 Mason's Orders
"Grandpa, you're still up!" Emily exclaimed.
After putting on some fresh clothes and applying her medicine, Emily followed Michael to Mason's study.
Mason was there, totally absorbed in his calligraphy, creating this serene vibe.
But Michael was about to ruin it. "Grandpa, it's super late! If you end up ruining your eyesight from practicing calligraphy, it won't be worth it!"
Emily was mortified. She wished she could sew Michael's mouth shut right then and there.
"You always make fun of me," Mason chuckled.
But Mason actually found it funny and laughed heartily at Michael's comment.
He set his pen down and motioned for Emily to join him on the sofa. "You guys cut off the internet, so I had to replace something to do."
Emily, who was terrible at lying, froze for a moment.
Mason noticed her reaction but didn't say anything. Michael, however, kept playing dumb. "Cutting off the internet was for your own good, Grandpa. Fewer games mean healthier eyes! Calligraphy at least cultivates your mind. I'm all for that!" Michael plopped down opposite Emily, crossing his legs lazily and giving her a knowing look.
Emily realized how bad she was at lying and quickly smiled at Mason.
Mason's face lit up with a healthy glow, and his laughter was loud and hearty. "Come on! You two think you can fool me? You're still too young! But I can't be bothered to deal with those company matters."
Mason's smile faded as he looked at Michael.
In that moment, Emily could tell Mason knew everything. He just chose to stay quiet, giving Michael a chance to learn.
"Michael, in the future, Smith Corporation will be yours and Veda's. I'm glad you can handle things now. No business is without setbacks. Overcoming this hurdle will earn you real respect."
Cutting off the internet was pointless! Mason was incredibly sharp. So impressive.
As Emily marveled, Mason turned his gaze to her.
He glanced at the sparkling diamond ring on Emily's finger, smiled, and continued. "Emily, you wanted a divorce a while ago, and I agreed. Now that you're back, I know something must have happened to the Smith family. Michael must have begged you to stay, and you couldn't bear to see the Smith family in trouble, so you agreed, right?"
Emily couldn't help but admire Mason even more. "Grandpa, you're amazing. How do you know everything?"
Michael almost laughed at Emily's reaction.
Mason stayed home all day, surrounded by old folks. What could he possibly know? He was just guessing to trick Emily! And Emily, with her simple mind, fell right into Mason's trap.
Looking at Emily's admiring expression towards Mason, especially under the warm light, her crescent-shaped eyebrows framing bright eyes, with long eyelashes casting gentle shadows on her eyelids, and her soft cherry blossom-like lips forming a perfect curve, Michael felt a bit moved.
His usually cold eyes softened, looking at her with affection.
"Michael." Mason's voice suddenly cut through Michael's thoughts.
He turned to see Mason giving him a knowing look.
Nothing ever got past Mason.
"Since you're here, I need to tell you something," Mason said, with that all-knowing air. "Mrs. Watson's birthday party is tomorrow. I don't feel like dealing with that crowd, so you take Emily. Jessica's back, right? You, Jessica, and Bryan Watson should catch up."
Mason then turned to Emily. "Jessica and Bryan grew up with Michael. Jessica went abroad a few years ago..."
Before Mason could finish, Michael cut in, his face suddenly darkening, which surprised Emily. "I introduced her to Jessica today. Besides, I'm not that close with Mrs. Watson. Grandpa, you should go tomorrow."
Mason wasn't pleased. He tapped his cane and snapped at Michael. "You've met Jessica, but not Bryan! Are you still mad at him? Everyone has their own path! Bryan's always been into games. You pushed him into business, and he wasn't interested! This needs to be resolved. Are you going to let past issues ruin your friendship?"
The more Mason talked, the darker Michael's expression became.
In the end, he couldn't take it anymore. He just muttered, "Got it," and stormed out, not even glancing at Emily.
The room fell into an awkward silence. But Emily could see it clearly. Michael and Bryan had some serious beef. It wasn't just a simple falling out.
Mason grumbled, "Oh, look at Michael, such a bad temper! I only mentioned Bryan a few times, and he blew up!"
Seeing Mason getting worked up, Emily quickly snapped out of her thoughts and tried to comfort him.
Meanwhile, Michael headed downstairs and out the door.
His phone kept buzzing with calls from his rich friends and from Sophia. But he ignored them all.
It wasn't that he had nowhere to go; he just didn't want to deal with those friends who only cared about partying.
"Michael?" Emily called out.
Hearing her, Michael put away the cigarette he had just taken out. He shoved his hands back in his pockets and stood alone in the night.
Emily wrapped her knitted coat tighter around herself, walked up, and looked at the bright moonlight. She took a deep breath, ready to speak, but Michael beat her to it. "If you're here as Grandpa's messenger, save it. The Watson family and mine go way back. I'll go to the party tomorrow, but some people..."
"I know." Emily cut him off. "I know what you're getting at. I'll go with you tomorrow. It's Grandpa's order, but whether you see certain people or not is up to you. No one can force that."
