Chapter 8 ~ How Calm You Are

I hop up into Aaron’s truck, with Gavin and Evan in the back. I had geared up with my katana.. several throwing knives and my twin poniard.. They were made for me by the only other elf I have met in this realm. Finest Elven steel.. they hold the same edge.. never needing sharpened.

To pass the time.. Evan and I chatted back and forth.. I found out he’s an only child and lived at the pack house since he turned fifteen. He asked about elven rules. I said “Light elves live by three rules..

First rule: Treat every day like Christmas! Because every day is a gift!

Second Rule: There’s room for everyone on the nice list. They just have to want to be there

Third Rule: The best way to spread Christmas cheer is to sing it loud and clear. Because the best way help someone who’s lost their smile is to give them one of your own!”

Evan asks “Do all light elves live by these rules?” She looks sad for a moment.. then, she smiles “I do!! And that’s what matters most! I can only be responsible for how I am. It’s like happiness.. Being with someone makes you happy. Not because of the person. But because our happiness comes from within ourselves. It’s no one’s job, but my own.. to replace what makes me happy!”

I take her hand and kiss her knuckles. She really is something! And she’s right.. I am happy just being around her.. and that’s my happiness. I haven’t even kissed her yet. I want it to be special.

Arriving at the coordinates, we exit the truck.. they’re all looking around and I giggle “You won’t see it, until I remove the glamour..” I moved to the portal and waved my hands.. right before us, stood a five foot mirror portal! I look at Aaron “They will know the glamour has been tampered with.. it is indeed from DullenDirk.. and my father’s magic is showing a trace.. so he probably provided the mirror.. but the magic that is the portal itself, is that of a dark elf.”

Aaron looks at it a long time… he sighs “It looks just like a regular mirror in a lady’s dressing room. How does it work? And what should we do about it?” I laugh and tell him to watch.. I touch my fingers to the glass.. and they melt into it. I say “Only a highborn elf can do that.. So, that tells me that either my father, or one of my brothers are letting the assassins through! And I am going to destroy it! It will be a couple weeks before they can set another… and I will fix it so it can’t be set here. Time to set some wards!”

I pull the heat from the afternoon sun.. wrapping my hands around it.. I formed a ball.. rolling it around.. this ball of solar energy.. compacting it.. hardening it.. I flung my hands towards the mirror.. It melted upon impact.. leaving no trace of it at all. Aaron grinned “Easy Peasy, for my amazing mate. Gone without a trace.”

I sheepishly said “Well.. a little trace… When my fingertips brushed the portal, my brother Tremaine, was on the other side. Not that it matters. They already know where I am. But I shot a little solar flare in his direction. It will, most likely, piss him off. Their magic together can’t match mine. My father knows I am stronger… than even him! If he succeeds in putting Galbhor on the throne, it would be high treason. Lord Corellan would have to intervene. It is my mother’s bloodline that carries Royal blood.. not Callan’s!”

They all stand there, staring at me.. mouths gaping.. I asked “What? Already?!” Gavin shakes his head “You just say you’re the rightful monarch.. the Queen.. and like it’s nothing.” I realize that’s exactly what it means.. Nothing.. I say it out loud “That’s exactly what it is! Nothing! If it ever came down to actually taking the throne.. I would abdicate to one of my cousins. I have five.. and they’re welcome to it! I don’t want it! I’m going to be a wolf!”

Evan whoops really loud, and lifts me and spins me in a circle! “For real!? You’re going to turn?! That is so cool! I’ve never witnessed a turning!” Aaron laughs “Yeah.. Never would have guessed that! What with how calm you are!”
