The Failed Rejection -
Chapter 25
Penelope had do much fun with her family, but she paid for it the next week. Penelope’s week at school became slammed with clinical hours, and her professor surprised her with a test that she was not prepared for. Penelope was stressed to the max, and not able to do anything but her course work. It was Wednesday when her phone was continuously ringing with an unknown number. She was in class, and unable to accept the calls. She finally got to take a call near the end of her school day.
“Penelope Braxton?” A female voice on the phone answered when she picked up.
“This is Penelope, can I help you?”
“This is a nurse at Philadelphia Memorial Hospital. You asked to be emergency contact at the man you brought in.”
“Is he okay?” Penelope asked desperately:
“He’s perfectly fine Miss. Braxton. He’s awake.” The nurse said making Penelope speechless.
“I’ll be right there,” Penelope said and hung up the phone. Penelope ran out of the building, and quickly made her way to the hospital.
When she came to the familiar hospital room, Penelope heard voices. Penelope put her hand on the door, but hesitated. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to actually meet this man. Fantasies were so much better than reality. The choose was taken from Penelope as the door was suddenly jerked opened. She fell forward, and almost fell flat on her face. Penelope luckily was caught by the doctor, unluckily the mystery man was awake and staring directly at her.
“Ah Miss Braxton, just the woman I was looking for.” Penelope’s eyes connected with the large werebear sitting up on the bed.
“Hey your a wo-“ Penelope interrupted before the man could call her a werewolf.
“Hey Doctor how is our patient?” The doctor looked from her to the patient.
“He’s amazing! He had a miraculous recovery. If it wasn’t for his amnesia then there wouldn’t be anything of concern,” the doctor said looking through his chart.
“Amnesia?” Penelope said looking at the man in the hospital bed. If he has amnesia how did he know she was a wolf?
“Yup, it’s a shame, he will be discharged, and taken to the mental asylum tomorrow.”
“What?” Penelope shrieked. Penelope looked at the poor man who was sitting on the bed looking confused. “I’ll be right back.” Penelope walked outside the room with the doctor.
“Your discharging him? He doesn’t have a clue who he is?” Penelope asked outraged.
“Which is why we called you. You insisted you be listed as his emergency contact. He is in perfect health, besides his missing memory. We can no longer keep him. So the man either goes home with you, or the state mental asylum.” The doctor turned around, and Penelope could barely hold in a scream. Doctors like that gave them all a bad name. Penelope took a deep breath, and walked back into the room.
“Are you okay?” The man asked.
“Yeah, just frustrated,” Penelope said and sat down in her normal chair. The man regarded her,
“Because of me?” Penelope shook her head,
“No because of that jerk doctor. So can I ask you what you do remember?” The man let out an uneven breath.
“Not much it’s all blurry.”
“How did you know I was a wolf?” He just shrugged his giant shoulders,
“I don’t know. I just knew.”
“You do know your a bear right?” The man gave her a ‘duh’ look, and Penelope laughed.
“I was just checking, I didn’t know what type of amnesia you had.” Penelope said while lifting her hands in surrender.
“I can’t explain it. I know I’m a bear, I know I’m the alpha. I know my pack needs me, I have no idea why I’m here.”
“I’m assuming the doctor told you that we have no identification on you.” Penelope said, and the man nodded his head. Penelope didn’t want to bring this up, but it was better now with the doctors able to sedate him.
“Have you looked at your body since waking up?” The man gave her a smirk,
“I know I’m attractive. Thank you for letting me know.” Penelope rolled her eyes, men.
“Look at your chest,” Penelope said bluntly. The man looked down, and at first seemed confused. When he saw the gauze on his chest he froze. Sh.it he didn’t seem to forget his lore, and customs.
“What did they do it me?!” The man asked in a panic.
“Calm down,” Penelope said soothingly and grabbed the man’s hand. The man seemed to stop panicking.
“Whatever they did we can fix, it can all be redone,” Penelope said soothingly, the man nodded. He started breathing deeply,
“Your right. The can re tattoo everything.” Penelope relaxed, happy that she was able to calm the large bear shifter down without much of a fuss. Penelope pulled out a phone, and called Alpha Axel’s personal cell phone number.
“Who are you calling?” The man asked.
“The only bear shifter I know, besides you that is.” The phone went to voice mail, and Penelope hung up. She quickly dialed his office phone, and the same thing.
“Hello Alpha Axel will you please give me a call back. It’s important, it’s Penelope Braxton by the way.” Penelope looked to the man on the bed, who was staring intently at her.
“Axel, the name sounds familiar.” Penelope nodded,
“I’m sure it does, all alphas know others and their territories. When I found you I reached out to him, and he was reaching out to local packs inquiring about missing bears.”
“Nobody came?” The man looked upset.
“Not to worry, that just means your not from around here. Who knows you couple be from Michigan or Alaska!” Penelope said trying to cheer him up. Penelope named the two states with the largest number of bear packs, but it seemed to resonate with him.
“Alaska, I think I’m from Alaska.” Penelope nodded,
“Okay, if I can get Axel to return my calls I’ll let him know. Anything else like a name?” The man shook his head looking upset.
“Should I just give you a nick name then?” The man shrugged his shoulders in indifference, but Penelope could tell that he wanted some normalcy. Penelope thought for a few minutes.
“How about LB.”
“LB?”
“Yeah! Little Bear!” Penelope said like it was the smartest thing in the world, while the man just glared at her.
“Little is one of those ironic nicknames. Cause you are obviously not little.” Penelope started blushing when the man smirked. “Then the obvious bear, cause your a bear,” Penelope finished looking away. Her face was blushing bright red.
“Sounds good to me,” newly appointed LB said with a laugh.
They talked for a little while longer, but Penelope left too soon as she really had to study. She left him with her number in case the doctors tried to discharge him before she came back the next day.
LB Pov
LB watched the woman who saved him in so many ways leave with mixed feelings. Penelope was not his mate, but his bear was reacting strongly to her. LB fingered the piece of paper she gave him before she left.
Penelope Braxton

Since LB didn’t have a cell phone Penelope made sure he had a way to contact her. She promised to return tomorrow to pick him up, but it wouldn’t be until later afternoon. LB understood, the woman had a life, one that he was interfering with. LB felt bad, but he was so glad that she was there for him.
When LB panicked over the destruction of his tattoos, Penelope touched soothed him in a way only a mate should. LB didn’t understand why she wasn’t his mate, maybe his bear was confused. His bear chuffed at him.
When LB woke up it was like being in a fog. It was like he was a half-filled slate, and LB didn’t understand why things were this way. LB knew the basics of shifter and supernatural life. He knew of the different species, pack hierarchy, and the fact that He’s the pack alpha. LB only knows because his wolf told him.
What LB doesn’t know are things like his name, where he’s from, or why he was beaten near to death in the woods. That just skims the surface of the things that LB doesn’t know about himself. When you think about it, it pretty depressing. LB’s thoughts were broken when a nurse came in, and took his vitals. The woman didn’t say a word, and LB couldn’t help but compare her to Penelope.
“I bet she would be so much nicer,” he thought to himself. The woman finally left, and not much longer did he realize he was feeling hungry. LB pushed the nurse button on the panel. He waited too long for the nurse to come in, and rudely ask him what he wanted.
“Food. Can you handle that?” He was tired of the disrespect. Alpha’s don’t tolerate it. It took LB forty-five minutes to get some barely edible food.
“Goddess I’m ready to get out of here,” he said to the empty room. Tomorrow can’t come soon enough.
