Chapter 44

Braxton pov

Braxton managed to get to the location after he received Penelope’s text within ten or fifteen minutes. Holden saw him approached and ushered him in. Braxton saw several scared women who were clearly terrified of him, but he ignored them and looked for Penelope. His mate.

“Braxton!” Braxton honed in on her voice and saw her approaching him.

“What’s going on? I heard you needed me,” Brax asked her while he pulled her close, relishing in the sparks of the mate bond. Braxton nuzzled her neck and continued to breathe in her scent. Penelope seemed to be doing the same, before she finally managed to tear herself away.

“Look,” Penelope led him to a group of young terrified bearshifters. This is it! This is what he did this for, but looking around at these terrified women. Braxton got so much more than what he anticipated. Brad pulled himself together.

“Have they said anything?” Brax asked Penelope. She shook her head negative,

“I didn’t even try, I know how secretive bears are in general. Add in being kidnapped by wolves, I knew they wouldn’t talk to me.” Braxton looked at his mate and was continually surprised by her knowledge of bear culture. She was going to make an amazing Luna. His bear roared in agreement.

The young kids seemed to recognize their own kind despite not having their bears. The biggest kid hesitantly started to edge closer to the mated pair, and Braxton made it easier for the child by getting down on his knees.

“Hey guys, my name is Alpha Braxton.” He looked to Penelope, “that’s my mate Penelope.”

“She can’t be your mate! She’s a wolf,” one of the boys called out. Brax had to hold back a growl at the disrespect to his mate.

“I know it’s hard to understand, but it was bad wolves that did this to you, a different wolf saved you. A good wolf,” Braxton asked pointing out Brad who simply waved at the young boys. Braxton looked at the boys who reluctantly nodded.

“That’s my mates brother, and her other brother was with me at the auction. The thing you have to learn is there are good and bad in all species.” Braxton told the boys who just nodded,

“Sorry.” One mumbled out.

“All right, can any one of you tell me where you are from? Or what your names are? How old you are?” Braxton asked the children and they all clamored to answer him. The oldest was six and the youngest was four and they all recounted their names. Braxton talked to them a little bit further and the young boys didn’t know much about where they were from or could him about their parents. Braxton was a bit discouraged.

“Don’t worry, we will figure it out,” Penelope encourage him and Braxton really needed it.

“Your right, we will get them back to their parents,” Braxton stated after a moment of silence.

“So what’s the plan?” Penelope asked Brad. Without warning there was a strong alpha aura into the restaurant. Braxton knew that Killian came onto the scene.

“We have to go back to the midnight howlers pack.” Alpha Killian said as he walked into the room.

“What about everyone else?” Brad asked.

“They come with us of course. We will replace out who they are and their home packs when we get back. If they are rejected they will have a home with us always.” Killian stated and it seemed like the woman took comfort in his words. Killian left without warning. Brad walked over with his mate seemingly worried.

“Braxton what happened after I left?” Braxton shrugged.

“We questioned the owner, he said something about a rogue king.” Penelope gasped and the two siblings looked at each other.

“He’s dead!” Penelope said sharply.

“I don’t know, I just know what happened.” Braxton told them, he vaguely remembered his father speaking about the rogue king before they flew out here but it was an afterthought. This was the most important thing to him at the time.

Liliana pov

Lili didn’t like her mate being away from her for this long, especially when she was this close to giving birth to the twins. Nathan was back while Killian was gone, but it just wasn’t the same without having him here. Lili needed them both. Lili knew helping the bearshifter was important, she just couldn’t fight the feeling that something important was occurring.

Nathan got out of bed in the middle of the night, and at first Lili thought it was due to one of the kids waking up. Jocelyn still had problems sleeping though the night, especially after her biological mother died. When Nathan came back to bed and said the words,

“Killian called.” Lili knew something was wrong.

“What is it?”

“He’s flying back. He will be back in the morning.” Lili knew it was bad, Killian wouldn’t behave so rashly if it didn’t involve her or the kids. Lili tried to go back to sleep, but she just couldn’t. Her brain refused to shut off.

Callum walked into the room and got into the bed beside her. It was probably five in the morning. Lili wrapped her arms around her son the best she could with her large pregnant belly. Callum knew the babies were coming soon and Lili did the best she could to prepare him for the changes.

“Daddy’s coming home soon isn’t he?” Callum asked her. Lili nodded,

“Yes he is.”

“He will be bringing back some one very special,” her son told her.

“Whose that?” Lili asked as he piqued her curiosity. Callum remained quite for a few moments.

“I’m not sure, Kota just tells me that this person is important to us. Like uncle Brad,” Callum told him as an afterthought. Lili thought the comment was odd,

“What do you mean? Uncle Brad is family of course he is important to all of us.” Callum frowned,

“Kota says Uncle Brad is my protector, one of them anyway.” Lili wasn’t sure what to make of that, she looked to see if Nathan was awake and sure enough he was.

“Hey buddy why don’t you go get your sister and go get some breakfast,” Nathan told Callum.

“Okay Daddy,” Callum said and ran off. Lili was always amazed by how her son could be a serious alpha then like turning a light switch he was a five year old again. The five year old boy who looked to be almost nine years old. Suddenly Nathan’s phone went off in her pocket.

“They landed, they should be here within the hour,” Nathan told her.

“Do we know how many there will be arriving?” Lili asked.

“Close to fifty,” Nathan replied.

“All right well they will be starving prepare the food.” Lili couldn’t leave the bedroom as she was on bed rest as the doctor told her she could go into labor at any time. Lili was positive that she had been this to stave off labor because she was carrying a female wolf pup. If she had been carrying a male Lili knew those babies were large as Callum was proof.

Lili finally decided to get out of bed and quickly walked to her bathroom to do her business. She quickly finished and came out to change her clothes. Lili was so large she had nothing to change into except for some dresses, she didn’t mind that it was winter as Lili was on bed rest. Lili sat back on the bed as Nathan came into the room.

“Killian just called, he wants you downstairs,” Nathan told her as he sat down next to her. Lili couldn’t believe her ears, ever since she got pregnant Killian had been super protective of her.

“What? Are you serious?” Nathan nodded,

“Apparently it’s mainly women and children. Killian thinks seeing you will help,” Nathan told her and swept her up in his arms. She worried about her being to heavy for him, but he carried her to the elevator.

Nathan sat her down in one of the couches in the living room.

“I’ll get you some breakfast.”

“Nathan make sure the kids are on our floor with Helen,” Lili asked Nathan a he got her settled in. Despite having killed the rogue king Lili was still super protective of her kids, especially after the moon goddess told her of the threats to her son.

“Sounds good,” Nathan walked away and Lili was finally able to check her phone for the first time that morning. Lili didn’t have much on her phone except a few missed calls from businesses that she was in charge of while Killian was away. Lili couldn’t call them back as Killian would be here anytime. Lili did sent a quick text to the Gamma female Kara to come to the packhouse. She was a horrible woman who was insanely jealous of Penelope, but Killian stated he needed women so she would have to do. Lili really wished Seth would replace his mate already. This pack really needed their Beta female.

Nathan came back with food for her the same time Kara came into the room.

“You called for me?” Kara spoke to me as if she had venom in her tongue. Nathan was clearly pissed.

“You speak to your Luna like that again and I’ll throw you in the dungeons.”

“You can’t do that to me, you’re not the alpha here!” Kara stated venomously and Lili felt Killian had entered the packhouse before the woman had even started talking,

“Says who?” Killian let out his aura and Everyone who was in the room was down on the floor except her and Nathan. Killian was furious. While there had only been Nathan and Kara in the room a full array of people had came into the room following Killian.

“Killian, your aura,” Lili reminded him gently. Killian finally seemed to come back to himself and dial it back. Everyone was able to get off the floor except for Kara who was terrified.

“Kara, for talking to my Luna and Alpha Nathan that way who is in charge of my pack when I am gone you get a week in the cells.” Kara’s face turned to one of horror,

“Holden do something!” Kara cried.

“My hands are tied, Alpha Killian has gone easy on you and you know it. He could have had you kicked out of the pack. I love you Kara, but your not acting like a gamma female.” Holden told her in a begging tone.

“He’s right, gamma’s are meant to be the heart of the pack. Your job it to protect me, but your too overcome by jealousy, take her away,” she decreed while Grant one of the guards took her away screaming.

The drama finally being over Lili finally saw that Penelope was in the room.

“Penelope!” She cried out and Penelope ran into the room. “What are you doing here?”

“You would never believe me,” Penelope said and Lili saw the giant bearshifter come into view. Lili laughed,

“I think I figured it out.” Penelope looked at her and shook her head,

“No it’s not like that, he’s my second chance mate,” Penelope explained.

“Oh I’m so happy for you Penelope!” Liliana cried out. Brad walked up,

“Liliana is the packhouse ready? The woman are getting antsy.” Liliana knew the food was ready, but that was it. Liliana rubbed her belly,

“Yeah go ahead, we will have to wing it.” As the females and children were coming in Killian as well as Seth were walking into the room.

“Hello I’m Luna Liliana of the Midnight Howlers Pack. I’m sorry I don’t stand up but I’m technically on bed rest, so if you don’t see me in the next couple of days that’s why. There is a nice breakfast being made right now, why don’t you go ahead and grab something to eat while we go ahead and get your room accommodations figured out.” Lili told the room of scared woman and children.

“Why are you on bed rest?” A woman asked who was standing next to another woman and Brad.

“Brad did you replace your mate?” Lili asked when she noticed they were holding hands. Brad nodded smiling widely.

“Yes this is Violet.”

“I’m very happy for you,” Lili said and completely dismissed the other woman.

“Why?” The woman tried again but Nathan intervened.

“My mate didn’t answer you for a reason, if your ask again you will replace yourself on your a*s,” Nathan growled out and scooped her up.

Lili found herself in Killian’s office, Nathan explained before she could ask.

“Killian wanted to have a meeting, we just have to wait.” Lili went ahead and started working on the accommodations while she was waiting on her mate. She knew that Braxton had several brothers, and knew they were staying for a few days.

Lili had figured about half of the accommodations when the door opened. Killian, Brad, Braxton, Penelope, Liam, Jackson, Axel, Seth, Holden, and Dash walked in to the office.

“Holden, would you give this to Helen please.”

“Of course Luna,” Holden said and walked back out of the office. Lili watched Holden walk out and thought it was such a shame his mate behaved poorly. Holden deserved better, yes the man made a mistake by initially wanting to reject Kara but he worked through that and grew to love her. The two of them even had a son together.

“Okay Killian tell me what happened at that place,” Liliana demanded, she didn’t need to wait for Holden as he was there. Killian gave everyone a run down of the trafficking operation Braxton had asked his help with to shut down. How the werewolf council was in on it, and they were doing experiments on humans. Killian thought he had a lead on what pack to go to for answers, he just needed time. Killian seemed to be done, but Lili knew there were more to the story than what he was telling.

“Come on Killian, there is more just say it.”

“Lili, at the auction…there is some one claiming to be the rogue king,” Killian told her hauntingly. Lili’s mind froze. This was her worst nightmare, what she feared the most. This is all the work of some one after their son, just like her real father.
