The Lycan’s Rejected Mate -
Chapter 164
Caliana's POV
I woke up to so many flowers in my room. My favorite sunflowers, how did this happen? I gracefully hopped out of bed and smelled them, I tried searching for a note but I didn't see any. Could it be that they are from Garret? But how did he know these are my favorites? I went to the bathroom to shower, the flowers put me in a good mood.
I wore trousers that were left for me on the bed and a big shirt. The doctor and a nurse walked in, and they were shocked at the many flowers in my room.
"Wow, Luna, I'm sure the Alpha sent these," The female doctor beamed. I only smiled but I knew it wasn't him. Alpha Edward Chasia wouldn't do this for me. They checked me one last time and cleared me to go. I looked at the clock. Juanita told me that Marcus is coming to get me at 10 and it's still 9.
"Doctor Tee, can you send two members of the general staff in this room, I'd like their help to deliver these flowers to some patients," I said, the doctor was so happy and immediately did as I asked. Two middle-aged men named Mr. Tim and Jim helped me carry the flowers. We went into each room, leaving them and it was good to see how simple flowers brightened up the patients' day! We ended up reaching outside where something caught my eyes. On the hospital's smaller gate was a group of frail people, eating. "What's that area?" I asked. Most of them were women with kids and they looked sick too.
"Oh those are the people who come here to seek medical help, most of them are strays," Mr. Jim said. Strays are werewolf and Lycans shifters who are let their packs for different reasons, most of them survive but some let their inner beasts take over and become feral, "They are staying just outside the main gates... in the forest,"
"Why aren't they getting help then?" I ask.
"Well, they do sometimes but they come back again with more injuries or illnesses, the cold just worsens their situation," He responded sadly.
"How did they manage to get through security?" I asked.
"They stand on our borders for days sometimes and patrol just take pity on them,"
I frowned and approached the group, there were over 20 people.
"Hello everyone!" I waved jolly, and they all turned to me and bowed.
"My name is Caliana Meyers and I'm the Luna of this pack," Their reaction surprised me. They all got on their knees to bow. I looked back and Mr. Jim, perplexed.
"No, please don't do that," I went to help a woman who had two kids in her arms stand up but Tim blocked my path.
"We don't know what infections or diseases they carry, Luna,"
I shook my head and helped the woman stand up and the others did the same, however, they weren't looking into my eyes.
"What is your name?" I asked politely.
"I'm Kareen and I help out a lot in the camps," She said.
"Have they attended to you?" I asked, she smiled nervously and looked past my shoulders. I followed her gaze to a short bald man, he had a solemn expression on his face. "Who's that?"
"He's the hospital director, Mr. Cameron," Mr. Tim answered, " Alright Tim, ask the cafeteria if there is more of that soup, and if there is, ask for it t be brought here immediately," I went to talk to the director, his expression decompressed upon seeing me and he smiled, bowing. "Luna, what are you doing out here," He asked, still with a smile.
"I was giving out flowers when I saw this group... May I know why they are not being attended to?" My question made his smile falter and he trailed his gaze to the group, a flicker of disgust appeared in his eyes and I almost growled at him. "Well, they are not our priority Ma'am and if we render any kind of assistance is only from the goodness of our hearts," He said and I swallowed.
"But they need it, those three men's wounds need to be cleaned and those babies need a proper check-up," I pointed out, I can tell from the way they are looking that surviving every day is a battle, they barely have any clothes on their backs. "We would like to help but the hospital's resources are well just enough for our people,"
"Can't you ask for funding from higher officers?"
"It's more complicated than that, Luna, please don't concern yourself with this issue, we shall give them some gauze and spirit, or a first aid kit, maybe some medications for the kids," He smiled.
"Please do more," I asked and he nodded. "Does the Alpha know about these groups of people?" I asked and he stiffened.
"We don't concern him with such matters, as you know, my Luna, there is a system, there are people in power meant to assist the Alpha with trivial subjects like these," He explained and I nodded. My heart went out to the group of people. Marcus appeared by my side and everyone bowed, he didn't look at anyone else when he said;
"Let's go, I have to go back to work," I followed him. Getting in the SUV, we were silent, my mind going back to the needy strays we left outside the hospital.
We reached home and Love ran to hug me, she give me the wildflowers she picked out herself.
"Welcome back, home!" She cheered.
