The Mirrorverse -
Chapter 70
Ellie
Ellie knew the day would come, had been waiting for it to come. She had been waiting for nothing else. She lay there and listened to the discourse in the next room, wondering how dear sweet Viskra could have been so evil as to make the weapon for the mad man.
“So this is the anti-energy gun and it is complete?” Steve’s voice floated through the wall.
“Yes,” Viskra’s voice followed.
They entered a dialogue on how to work the weapon before those fateful words came out the stone.
“We have a test subject next door, if it doesn’t work, the next test subject will be your father,” Steve’s words chilled Ellie to the spine, despite having long resigned herself to being the guinea pig.
“It works,” Viskra’s voice was unadorned with emotion, just level and cold. Who was he? He wasn’t the sweet boy Ellie had shared the long days and nights with. Maybe she hadn’t been cut out for psychology, she truly was a terrible judge of character.
Ellie was on her feet as Steve appeared in the cell, flanked by Brian.
She had thought that she was no longer capable of emotion, that her soul had drained out through the scabs around her shackles; but when he pointed the anti-energy gun at her, Ellie wanted to live.
She felt suddenly strong, physically and mentally, her survival instinct finally deigning to kick in. When she lunged for him she knew it was probably the last thing she would ever do, but she did it without fear in her heart.
Then all went black.
