Chapter 30

Josh POV

A few days had gone by. Sam had to call in sick from work, but she didn’t seem to mind. Alpha Colton has been look for a new apartment in the City for her, so she can get back to her life. I hated thinking about it. We have been getting along so well, I really don’t want to see her go. She also doesn’t seem stoked about going back, either.

Today Alpha Colton is contact some of the other local Alpha, trying to replace out anything he can about Beth.

I promised Sam and Jess, that I would take them to a lake just by the Northern border. It’s still to cold out to swim, but we plan on bringing some food and drinks for a little picnic.

I made my way to Sam’s room and knocked.

“Come in” I heard, before I opened the door.

I walked in and found Jess sitting on the bed. Sam was walking out of the bathroom and when she saw me, she squealed in excited and jumped into my arms, wrapping her legs around my waist.

“I’m so excited for today!” She squealed out.

“Well then, let’s get this party started.” I replied, with a playful wink.

We headed to the kitchen and packed a picnic basket full of sandwiches, fruit, cookies and water. Before heading out towards the lake.

“This place is beautiful, I wish I could stay here forever.” Sam said, while taking in the forest. I let out a sigh, before answering.

“You have a life back in the city and a job, wouldn’t you miss it?” I asked curiously.

“Not at all. Other than Jess and Brad, I really don’t have anyone else in my life. I grew up in an orphanage, I never knew my parents.” She said, with a sad tone and before I could reply, she spoke again.

“Speaking of Brad, he must be so worried sick about us.” Sam said, while looking at Jess. Jess looked nervous and uncomfortable.

“Ya, I guess so.” She replied, while shrugging her shoulders. You could tell something was bothering her.

“Why are you acting so weird? You know how stressed he was, when you came home after being missing for a couple day.” Sam said, with a frown.

“Ya I know, I just don’t want to talk about that. We don’t have much time left here, let’s enjoy it.” Jess said, but I could tell something was off. She seemed to be changing the subject, way to quickly.

“Okay…” Sam said and I could see the suspicious look on her face. She let it go for now, but I could tell she would be bringing it up again, at some point with Jess.

“What’s Mr. Serious doing today?” Sam asked, with mocking tone. I knew she meant Alpha Colton and I chuckled. She’s not wrong, he is a very serious man, he needs to learn how to loosen up.

“He’s making some business calls.” I said. Sam is still completely in the dark, about what is going on. It’s probably for the best, since she’s going back to the City soon. She would probably freak out, if she knew what I really was.

We made it to the lake and laid down a blanket, before we all sat down.

“Wow, it’s beautiful here.” Jess said, while inhaling deeply. She was looking around, taking in the picturesque view.

“Ya, during summer this is an amazing place to come and swim.” I replied.

We ate our food, while chatting and laughing, it was turning out to be a great afternoon.

After we were done eating Sam sat between my legs and leaned her back against my chest. I loved feeling her so close to me.

“Awww…You guys are just adorable.” Jess teased.

“Shut up! You know, if you and Mr. serious would get your s**t together and stop fighting the chemistry, you’d make a great couple. I wonder if he’s serious in bed too. I can picture him with a serious frown, saying ‘Jessica lay down, I’m now going to insert my p***s into your v****a now.’” Sam mocked, in a robotic voice. I snorted at her impression of Alpha Colton, before breaking out into a fit of laughter. Even Jess was laughing hysterically. Goddess she cracks me up.

“Oh my god Sam, no!!! I can actually picture it and it’s disturbing. Stop it, he’s my boss.” I said, in between fits of laughter, while shaking my head trying to get rid of the image.

“He’s practically got a girlfriend already, so get that idea out of your head.” Jess said, while shaking her own head.

“Whatever, that woman is …” Sam started to reply and cut her off with a “Sshhh…”.

I swear, I heard a twig snapping in the bush. I stood up abruptly, when I picked up the scent of something rotten. I knew immediately what it was, rogues.

I got into a defensive position. I could see concern on both Jess and Sam’s faces.

“What is it?” Sam asked, in a whisper.

“Stay behind me.” I replied sternly, while pulling her behind my back. Jess got behind me too.

I mind-link all the warriors and Alpha Colton, that I could smell rogues and gave them our location. I knew they were on the way, but it would take them, 10 minutes to reach us.

A grey wolf came out of the tree line and into sigh. She smelt of lavender and cherries, it was intoxicating. My wolf was going crazy in my head, repeatedly growling out one word.

“MATE”

That’s when I realized that the rogue wolf in front of me, was my mate. I was frozen in shock. She also froze for a moment, but quickly recomposed herself and started to snarl at us. I heard gasps from both Jessica and Sam, when they saw the rogue. s**t, this isn’t good, I’m going to have to shift in front of Sam, I thought to myself.

Two more rogues came into sight. They were snarling and snapping their canines at us, while stalking closer.

“What the hell are those things?” Sam whisper yelled.

I didn’t respond, there wasn’t time for me to explain anything. I shifted into my wolf and stood in front of the girls, protectively.

“Ahhh…What are you?” Sam shouted in fear. I couldn’t see her, but by sounds of her foot steps, I knew she was backing away from me.

“He’s trying to protect us.” I heard Jess tell Sam, but she also had a panicked tone.

One of the rogues that stood with my mate, lunged at me. I barely was able to dodge his attack, when the other rogue, jumped on top of me and bit my back. I didn’t feel any pain, the adrenaline was masking it. I spun my hand around and bit into the rogues abdomen. I heard a yelp, as he released me. I didn’t waste anytime and latched my jaws around his neck and bit into it, killing him instantly.

I turned around to replace my mate and the other rogue stalking towards Jess and Sam, who were backed up against a large tree trunk.

I growled, drawing the wolves attention to me. I was shocked when my mate lunged at me. We fell to the ground and rolled a few times, while fighting for control. She was snapping her jaw at me and it was clear that she was going for the kill. I knew I had to hurry, Sam and Jess don’t stand a chance against a wolf. I couldn’t believe that my own mate was trying to kill me.

I managed to gain the upper hand and was now on top of her. I latched my teeth into her shoulder and I heard her yelp in pain. I couldn’t believe I was hurting my own mate. She still wouldn’t stop fighting me. I was doing to my best to subdue her, without seriously injuring her.

I was distracted when I heard a loud shriek, followed by an “Ow”.

I turned my head, to see what was happening and saw that Jess had jumped in front of Sam to protect her and the other rogue had latched his jaws onto the side of her abdomen.

“Let go of me.” Jess shouted and I felt a strange power surround me, before I saw the rogue being thrown, 10 feet away into a tree . The force was so powerful, that the tree trunk cracked on impact. The rogue fell to the ground, but quickly got back up and was ready to attack them again. What the hell was that, I wondered? But didn’t have much time to think about it.

Jess fell to the ground from her injuries and Sam was crying hysterically, while trying to stop the bleeding. Panic coursed through me. I needed to do something and fast, or Sam and Jess would die.

Why is my mate doing this? She recognizes me, then why is she still fighting against me?

In that moment, I made the toughest decision of my life. I bit into my mates neck, with so much force, I killed her instantly. I didn’t have time to morn for her, I needed to save Jess and Sam.

I turn around, just as the rogue lunged at the girls. I lunged at him from the side and knocked him away from them. We both landed on the ground approximately 5 feet away from one another.

That’s when I saw Alpha Colton and some of the warriors arriving. They killed the last rogue immediately.

When all the threats were neutralized, that’s when the pain of losing my mate hit me like a hurricane. I just killed my own fated mate. The pain was so intense, it caused me to force shift into my human form and I couldn’t get up from the ground. It hurt so bad.

I dragged my naked body along the grass, towards my dead mate.

She had shifted into her human form, when she died. She was beautiful, with long black hair and she was tall, around 5’10. Her skin, was marked with so many scars. I couldn’t help but wonder where she came from, what kind of life she had lived?

“Why did you make me do it?” I asked out loud, while tears fell from my eyes.

I laid next to my mate and took her hand in mine. I wasn’t ready to leave her side. I had been looking for my mate, everywhere the past 3 years and I finally found her, only to be forced to kill her. I don’t even know her name.

“I’m sorry Josh.” Alpha Colton said lowly, while coming up beside me. I didn’t have to tell him that she was my mate, for him to realize it on his own.

“I need to get Jess to the hospital, Sam will come with us. Take all the time you need” He added. I didn’t respond and after a minute, he walked off.

I laid next to my dead mate for a good hour, before I got up.

Alpha Colton had one of the warriors bring me a shovel. I found it leaning up against a tree, a few feet away.

I dug a grave under a cherry tree and laid my fated mate to rest. I sat next to her grave, before covering her body and said goodbye to her. Tears continued to stain my cheeks. I had been sitting there for so long, that it was now dark out.

I covered the grave with dirt, before picking a handful of wild flowers and laying them by her head.

“Rest in peace, mate.” I said out loud, in a low sad voice, before slowly walking back towards the pack house.

I know I did what I had to, but it doesn’t make it any easier. My wolf hasn’t stopped whimpering in my head, since I killed our mate.
