Chapter 36

Home Again

“Don’t worry love, you’re safe now. Get comfortable it’s going to be a long bus ride. The man driving the worn–down bus smiled.

“They aren’t going to come after us”

He shook his head. “We’ll be fine.”

I dozed off. Kade was an Alpha wolf and those were his pack members they wouldn’t kill him. I had to convince myself they hadn’t injured or killed my mate. I couldn’t kill the fear of never seeing him agam though

I woke as the bus screeched to a halt. jolting me forward. I rubbed my eyes and peered round the seat to the windscreen. I caught sight of trees illummated by front porch lights. The house next door was black with only the light from the neighbours shining on it.

“This is your stop, dear”

I swallowed. “Are you sure?”

He nodded. The bus doors opened. I didn’t have a bag to carry. All I had remained at the academy.

“Take care,” the bus driver said.

I nodded and gave him my thanks. I rubbed my hands as I walked to the front door. The light from the neighbour’s porch shone on the boarded–up front door. I brushed a hand over the wood. It was wet and the ground was soggy. I went around back and found the same boarded–up door.

“Mom?” I whispered. My heart ran a marathon with each step around my house. “Are you here?” A tear rolled down my check

I knew in my heart my mother wasn’t home. No one was. Each window on the ground level was boarded up from the inside. It was too dark to make a plan to climb to the top story. Why would she leave? Or had something happened to her?

“Oh.” I said when I came to the basement window.

I sought out a rock among the overgrown weeds. How long had she been gone? Why would she leave? Someone had to have forced her to go. I picked out a rock near the oak tree. Answers awaited inside. I raised the rock over my head and hurled it at the glass.

I covered my face as the glass shattered. I prayed I fit. It was a tight squeeze but I managed to get the basement darker than the night sky with just a scrape on the calf.

“Crap. I didn’t think this through.”

“Shit,” I muttered.

I found the door and marched into the house. Instead of the familiar scent of Mom’s perfume and curry stews permanently stained in the air I was faced with a dust and moisture–filled room.

“Alright, that flashlight better be where I remember it.

My house was covered in sheets. The cups and plates were in their natural places. The fridge had spoiled milk and rotten meat. Why would Mom leave like this on her own free will? There was struggle and I believed someone would have informed me if something horrible happened to my mother.

I locked myself in my room with the flashlight to lighten it up. This house had never felt bigger. I couldn’t lose another parent.

The next day the house felt dead despite the sun bursting through the house. I managed to unbolt the front door but left all the windows untouched. I looked around for a note. Mom knew I would return eventually from the academy she should have left me something. I searched the house high and low and found nothing I stood in front of her bedroom door with an aching chest. My hand trembled hovered on the door handle.

I turned the door and let the door roll inward. It was just like I remembered it. No disturbances. Not even the air had changed. Her designer perfume floated in the air. I felt safe to walk in. I scanned for an envelope or a crumbled–up paper nothing in sight. I walked to the wardrobe and slowly opened it.

“She took everything.”

Since I left everything at the academy I had to settle for a short purple dress I had in my closet. I couldn’t fit in it when I left it fit like a glove now. I went over to my neighbours to do some digging.

Hoping I had the same neighbours I knocked on the crimson door, seconds later a tall broad- shouldered mountain man answered the door. His brows dipped as he looked down at me.

“Gabbic?”

“Hi Ron, have you seen my Mom?”

He took a few seconds to take me in. I hadn’t been home in months

“No, she left a day after you went to the academy.”

“A day?” I gasped.

She didn’t wait a week to run off? Why? Mom had always been scared of living in a pack but was she so scared she ran off without telling me where she was going?

“Did she say anything? Did you speak to her?”

Ron shook his head. “She boarded up the house and left without a word.”
