Lover’s time

“Kade?” I asked as he dragged me along the hall of the Alpha castle. “Slow down.”

I stumbled but Kade didn’t stop. He only paused to jam his key into the hole and drag me inside.

“Sorry, but things are complicated. I have to start training and my opponents for Alpha will turn up

soon.

“Alpha King?”

“No, Babe for Alpha of Sanders pack.”

“You have to fight for that too!”

He took my hands and tugged me close. I snuggled up to him.

“I do if there are any challengers.”

“Do you think there will be any?” I asked.

“Baxter might but he’s too cocky I’m not worried about him.”

“I’m worried about this about the monster wolf and… it smelling like me. Kade what if it comes back. and someone notices.”

He rubbed the back of his head. He opened his mouth to speak but he closed it.

“What?” I probed.

“Gabbie.”

I planted my hand on my hip and glared at him.

“Alex knows. I don’t like that he knows your scent. He knows I set the field on fire.”

“You did!”

“I had to! I couldn’t risk someone else putting two and two together.”

I couldn’t comprehend why I smelt like a crazed wolf but no doubt the Alphas would replace a reason to punish me for it. The trial had been suspended because of Harlow’s power kill. If it weren’t for that I would have been found guilty.

“Kade, what happened to Gareth?”

“It was horrible. That’s what you get when your fated mate dies. I’ve never seen it in real life.”

I rubbed my chest. What could have happened to force Harlow and Eva to fight? They’re best friends desnite their differences

Kade hadn’t let go of my hand since we went downstairs to figure out what happened with Eva.

“I want her dead! Dead! Ivan.” Gareth yelled in the face of a black–haired Alpha.

“I can’t do that.” Ivan said.

“Fuck that! She killed Eva.”

“It was a legitimate power kill. There’s nothing anyone can do, man.”

“Fuck! Fuck!” Gareth stomped away.

He glared at Kade on his way that didn’t hold malice but something I didn’t get, but understanding passed between them. The Alphas lounged around aside from Harlow. It seemed no one knew what to do. Gareth knocked over ornaments on his way out of the house.

“Alex. I called when he moved to walk upstairs.

He stopped and backtracked.

“Did you replace out what happened?”

He glanced upstairs. “Yeah, Leiah’s pretty messed up about it. Harlow confronted Eva about testifying against her on the incident in the woods. Things escalated Harlow wanted to show she was the strongest Alpha Female. She killed her.” Alex raked a hand through his hair.

“A power kill automatically declares battle season.”

Alex and Kade stared at each other for a brief moment..

“Do you guys have to fight?” I whispered.

“Of course,” Alex said.

“Is it a guarantee you two have to go against each other?”

“What? Scared I’ll rearrange your boyfriend’s face?”

Kade chuckled. “We can settle this right now, Henry.

“Stop! Don’t you guys ever give it a rest?”

My voice rose, silencing them both. Lives could be lost during battle season and clearly, none of them would stop until the other was dead. My heart rate spiked what if I got the same mark as Gareth? I pulled my hand from Kade’s.

I turned around and ran out with a thundering heart I ran to the omega quarters despite Kade’s calls and the tugging m my abdomen. I burst into my room where most of the girls were whispering. It stopped when I entered. They stared briefly before going back to their duties.

“Gabbie, Blair said. “Is she really gone?”

I stared at my bed. It hadn’t been touched. It was plain with only a blanket I used on my bed back home to decorate it. I wanted to curl up in it because it was the only thing that reminded me of home.

Emery appeared and sat on my bed. Her face was stained red.

She was the only nice one, she sniffled.

“Yeah Harlow shouldn’t have killed her. Battle season or not.

“That Alpha Female’s horrible. She looks at us like we’re scum like we’re less than the dirt beneath her shoes. She would have made an awesome Sanders Lina.” Blair said.

“Hey.” I sighed.

-Whatever. Blair rolled her eyes.

“What happens now?” Emery asked.

A girl came rushing into the dorm. “Emergency assembly!”

“Crap,” Blair said.

Everyone got up at once, abandoning their jobs and darting out of the room. I knew this was about battle season. The entire Academy was lined according to rank but not pack. Athena and her entire staff stood behind her.

The Alpha female raised her head as she addressed us

“Battle Season is now. Classes have been suspended until further notice.”

Cheers went around.

“The omega dance ceremony will be tomorrow night

Langed. “What is that?” I whispered to Emery.

“Something awesome

“The roster of events will be presented by your teachers. Now challengers for the title of Alphas must be made today before the sun sets. I’ll grant you all the opportunity. Dale pack!”

We waited for someone to raise a hand, yell or something but it was quiet. Athena moved on to Dixon

Gasps erupted like lava

Baxter emerged from the line of beta wolves. Kade walked up to the stage but he didn’t look surprised or irritated. He was prepared for this.

“Are you sure?” Athena asked in a bored tone.

“Positive. I’ll take the mantel of Alpha

“Yeah.” Kade replied.

Athena went through the other packs. Richardson had three challengers. Emery stiffened but refused to show her concern for Tristan.

Prepare for the coming ceremonies. That is all.”

“You think Kade’s going to be okay?” Emery asked.

I nodded. “He’s a strong wolf. Are you worried about Tristan?”

“He can take care of himself. Are you staying the night?”

I walked with her to the quarters only to grab my blanket. I should ask Kade for my locket back. The Alpha castle was quiet when arrived I noticed most of the Alphas in the gym. Though, when I opened the door to Kade’s room he was there staring at his phone.

“Shouldn’t you be training?” I asked.

He looked up. I closed the door behind me and walked up to him.

“Later. What’s that?” He stared at my blanket.

“Something from home. Please promise me you’ll be careful. I don’t have anyone else if something happens to you.”

He stood and raised my chin to meet his stare.

“You have Alex and that over–energetic friend of yours.”

“You know Alex and I are complicated so don’t die okay?”

He laughed softly and then kissed me, stroking my cheeks as his lips danced on mine.

“That won’t happen.”
